On Tuesday, 10 March 2026, four days after the collapse, I was alone at the access mouth of No. 7 Shaft, carrying out the sort of assessment I could almost have done in my sleep.

Core samples. Displacement measurements. Crack-propagation mapping along the upper bore wall. The drill bit entered the rock, I watched the readout, and I recorded the figures in my field notebook.

It was routine work, the kind that either kept a mine operating or told you when to close it. The circumstances were less routine. On Friday, 6 March, a production blast had collapsed the ventilation tunnel running parallel to the shaft. The following morning, the Health and Safety Executive had authorised a partial evacuation.

Eight coaches and five company minibuses had taken 200 of Cairn Dhu Mine's 208 workers down the twenty-five-mile single-track estate road towards the A9 junction. From there they were meant to continue to Inverness, the nearest city of any size.

I had remained with seven others, a skeleton crew tasked with keeping the diesel generator compound running, monitoring the integrity of No. 7 Shaft and waiting for the repair team that was supposed to arrive by helicopter within forty-eight hours.

The repair team had not arrived. The satellite handset had shown an intermittent single bar for three days without completing a single call.

I did not let that stop me doing my job. I had worked blast zones, flood-risk bores and three separate structural failures during my career. I also understood that the Monadhliath plateau was not trying to kill me personally. It was simply an exposed Highland wilderness at roughly 850 metres, with severe wind chill, rapidly falling night temperatures, boggy ground and miles of rock, peat and pale quartz gravel between the mine and meaningful shelter.

It would kill me as impersonally as it killed anything else if I stopped paying attention.

So I paid attention. I entered my readings in the field notebook with the same care I had given every report for nineteen years. The bore wall was stable. The cracking remained within the expected displacement parameters. The collapsed fill at the tunnel junction was dense and dry.

They were good figures. They said the shaft mouth was not going anywhere.

My sample drill struck metal at a depth of 1.2 metres.

I stopped and withdrew the bit, then checked the readout to make certain I had interpreted it correctly. Metal. Not rock, not ore and not reinforcement from the tunnel supports. Those supports were mapped, and I was drilling nowhere near them.

This was something else.

I put down the drill and took up my short-handled excavation pick. I made no assumptions. I simply dug.

The collapsed fill came away readily, loose and dry. After about twenty minutes of careful work, I had exposed enough of the object to grip it with both hands. I pulled it free and sat back on my heels, holding a steel survey tube about thirty-five centimetres long and eight centimetres in diameter.

It was the sort of waterproof container once used by military and geological survey teams to carry field maps through conditions that would destroy paper. Its rubber gasket had compressed and dried but had not failed. The steel was pitted and stained by a deep reddish mineral bleed, the particular iron-sulphate discolouration that took decades to accumulate in this substrate.

I recognised it immediately. I had documented the same staining on bore-wall samples many times during my four years at Cairn Dhu.

It did not form quickly. It accumulated over long periods in the presence of groundwater and mineral leaching. As I turned the tube in my hands and felt its weight, I understood without saying it aloud that it had not fallen into the wall during the collapse four days earlier.

It had been there for decades. Possibly longer.

I carried it back to the site office without opening it. The walk from the shaft mouth to the prefabricated operations building at the edge of the plateau took about ten minutes. A hard, cold wind ran over the open ground, driving loose grains of quartz against my boots. Beyond the mine lay broad, pale moorland and frost-whitened peat flats, open all the way to the dark western ridges. The emptiness distorted distance until a cairn half a mile away could have been fifty metres off or five miles.

I had grown used to it over four years. Most people never did.

The operations building was a long rectangular prefab clad in corrugated metal, with three small windows. My office occupied the far end beside the equipment store. It was not much: a desk, a filing cabinet, a corkboard covered with site plans and a small electric heater drawing power from the generator compound.

I stepped inside, closed the door and set the tube on my desk. Then I switched on the heater and worked the cap loose a fraction at a time. The dried gasket resisted, but eventually the cap turned anticlockwise and came free in my hand.

Inside was a hand-drawn map wrapped in waxed cloth.

I unfolded it across the desk and compared it with the engineering plans I had used throughout my four years at Cairn Dhu. The match was exact. The bore geometry was correct. All four service platforms were marked at 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres.

The lateral drifts at 350 and 580 metres were shown with their angles and dimensions written in the margins. The 800-metre platform and processing cavern had the same proportions I had measured myself during my first month at the mine.

The annotations were in English, written in a careful hand using British Geological Survey and National Coal Board-era drafting conventions from the late 1960s. I could date the document approximately by those conventions, just as I had dated the mineral staining on the tube.

Whoever had drawn it had worked to standards I had studied during my own training decades later.

I examined the map systematically, checking each level against the current plans. Everything matched. The shaft diameter was correct to within a centimetre. The platform spacing was accurate. The drift orientations were exact.

Whoever had made the map had either descended the shaft or worked from survey data more precise than anything in the official archive.

Then I reached the bottom.

At a depth of 1,040 metres, exactly sixty metres below the engineered shaft floor at 980 metres, a chamber had been drawn and labelled.

The label read: Level Zero.

I sat looking at it for a long time. The heater clicked. Wind pressed against the prefab wall and retreated.

I read the words again.

Level Zero.

There was no Level Zero in any plan, survey document or operational record I had ever seen for No. 7 Shaft or Cairn Dhu Mine.

The shaft floor lay at 980 metres. That was the bottom. It was where the engineered bore ended, where the lowest equipment sat and where the ore-hoist system terminated. There was no conventional extension below it.

But the old map showed a chamber.

I leaned back and stared at the neat, precise handwriting. This was not a mistake, a smudge or a misplaced mark. Someone had deliberately drawn a chamber at a specific depth, given it a specific name and buried the map in the shaft wall long enough for decades of mineral staining to accumulate on its container.

I thought about the collapse four days earlier. I thought about the sealed ventilation tunnel and the mine's damaged communications equipment. I thought about the satellite handset that had displayed one unreliable bar for three days without completing a call.

I thought about the repair team that should have arrived within forty-eight hours and had not come.

Then I took out my mobile and photographed every centimetre of the map. I took close-ups of the annotations, the dimensions and the label at the bottom. I took wider photographs showing the entire bore system. I photographed the survey tube, including its mineral staining and intact gasket.

When I finished, I had forty-seven photographs stored on my phone.

I returned the map to the tube, locked it in the bottom drawer of my desk, slipped the phone into my pocket and went outside.

I found Rebecca Shaw beside the generator compound, checking a fuel line on one of the backup units. She was crouched by the housing with a spanner in one hand, her high-vis waistcoat snapping in the wind. As she heard my boots on the gravel, she looked up. Her expression told me she knew I had found something.

I said nothing. I took out my phone and handed it to her.

Rebecca was Cairn Dhu's rope-access and mechanical safety specialist. She held an IRATA qualification and treated every harness, pressure gauge and anchor point as if a life already depended on it. She scrolled through the photographs with that same slow precision.

The hand-drawn map. The bore geometry. The old survey annotations. The chamber at 1,040 metres.

Level Zero.

She examined every photograph twice, then returned the phone and stood.

"Several workers have reported vibrations," she said. "Night shifts over the past two years. Always from beneath the shaft floor."

I waited.

"Not seismic noise. Not machinery resonance. Rhythmic and regular. They felt it through their boot soles and through the handrails on the lower platforms."

She paused and looked past me towards the western ridges, where the sun was beginning to sink behind torn banks of cloud.

"I attributed it to resonance in the underlying strata. Natural cavities aren't unusual in fractured Highland geology."

"But you didn't believe that."

She looked back at me.

"I wrote it off. Several workers, independently, giving the same description every time. I wrote it off."

The way she said it made clear that she had known something was wrong and had chosen not to pursue it. I understood the impulse. I had dismissed things myself over the years: readings slightly outside parameters but not far enough to halt production, or structural anomalies that remained within an acceptable tolerance.

You made those decisions because a site could not be closed whenever something merely felt wrong.

But this was different.

"Did you feel it yourself?" I asked.

She nodded once.

"At 03:00, on the 600-metre platform. I was carrying out a routine safety inspection. I felt it through the handrail first, then through the floor. Regular intervals. Patient. Like something breathing."

She stopped there. I did not press her.

"We should compare the map with the original survey archive in the morning," I said.

She agreed.

We returned to our separate accommodation blocks as the sun vanished behind the western Highland ridges. That night I lay awake on my bunk, listening to the wind scrape at the prefab walls and thinking about the hand-drawn map and the label at 1,040 metres.

Level Zero.

The night passed without incident.

At 06:00 on Wednesday, 11 March, Callum Park failed to attend the equipment check.

Callum was twenty-six, a drill operator from Newcastle upon Tyne and the youngest member of the skeleton crew. He was the sort of man who slept through alarms and left jobs half-finished, but when he turned up he was good at his work.

Rebecca went first to his accommodation block, assuming he had overslept. Fifteen minutes later, she found me at the operations-room terminal.

"His bunk's empty," she said. "Made. Not slept in."

It had the sort of tidiness that looked wrong. A bed made by someone who had risen deliberately, not by a man who had rolled out half asleep and dragged the blanket into place as an afterthought.

"His boots are gone," she added. "His phone's still on the shelf."

I called up the camp's motion-sensor and key-card records. The system logged every entry and exit through the controlled access gates. The HSE had required the measure after a contractor died of exposure three years earlier, having wandered off during a night shift and remained missing for two days.

Callum's key card had opened the No. 7 Shaft access gate at 02:18.

The gate had not been closed afterwards.

Rebecca studied the time stamp, then looked at me.

"He's been down there nearly four hours."

We took torches and rope harnesses from the equipment locker and descended the service ladder towards the 200-metre platform. The ladder was steel mesh, fixed to the shaft wall at three-metre intervals, with safety landings every ten metres.

It took twenty minutes to reach the platform. Our torches cut narrow white beams through the still air of the bore.

Callum was sitting with his back against the rock wall and his legs extended in front of him. His eyes were open. He was breathing shallowly but regularly. His hands rested in his lap.

In his left hand he held a small figure, roughly seven centimetres high, carved from copper-bearing rock and shaped into a seated human form.

His right palm was pressed flat against the wall beside him, as if he had steadied himself and then simply ceased to move.

Rebecca called his name.

He did not respond.

I crouched in front of him and checked his pupils with my torch. They reacted and tracked the light as it moved across his face, but did not settle on anything around him. They did not settle on me.

His eyes followed the beam, present but not conscious. His mouth was dry and clean. There was no chemical smell, no sediment and no sign that he had swallowed anything.

Rebecca lifted his right hand from the wall so she could check his pulse.

Then she stopped.

The rock behind his palm was warm.

It was not the residual warmth of a hand held against stone for hours. It came from within the wall, a dry and even heat radiating outwards from somewhere deeper.

I placed my own palm against the same spot and felt it at once. It had the quality of bodily warmth, as though something on the other side of a thin barrier was generating heat.

The rock had not absorbed warmth from Callum's hand. The heat came from the rock itself.

I pulled away and looked at Rebecca. She still held Callum's wrist, two fingers pressed to his pulse point, her face unreadable in the reflected torchlight.

"We need to get him to the surface," she said.

We secured Callum in a rope harness and hauled him up the service ladder, one section at a time. One of us climbed while the other supported his weight. He neither resisted nor helped. He moved when we moved him and remained still whenever we stopped.

His eyes stayed open throughout the ascent, tracking the shifting beams of our torches but never settling on either of our faces.

At the surface, we placed him on a camp bed in the operations building's first-aid room. Rebecca removed his boots to examine his feet for swelling or injury.

She stopped again.

The soles were worn completely through. The rubber had been abraded away until the socks were visible beneath.

It was not ordinary wear accumulated over weeks. It looked as though he had walked for days over abrasive rock without stopping.

He had been missing for less than four hours.

I looked at the figure still resting in his left hand. His fingers curled loosely around it, not gripping, simply holding. The copper-bearing stone had a dull sheen under the overhead light. Its surface was engraved with precise radial lines extending from the centre of the seated body.

They matched the notational marks on the old map.

I did not say so. I did not need to. Rebecca looked from the figure to me, and her expression said she had already made the connection.

We stood on opposite sides of Callum's camp bed, the engraved figure lying between us in his open hand, and neither of us spoke.

By Thursday morning, 12 March, the repair team still had not arrived.

I stood in the operations room holding the satellite handset and watched its solitary signal bar appear and vanish without making a connection. Then I decided we could not wait any longer.

Rebecca was checking Callum when I found her. He remained on the camp bed, breathing shallowly and steadily, his eyes following something neither of us could see.

The figure we had removed from his hand sat on the desk beside him.

I had locked it in my office drawer twice. The first time, I had returned to find the drawer still locked and the figure on the desk. I had picked it up, locked it away again and kept the key in my pocket. The second time, it had been waiting in the open beside Callum.

Neither of us attempted to lock it away a third time.

I told Rebecca we should drive down the estate road to the A9 junction, where the evacuation convoy should have passed through. A temporary Airwave or emergency communications relay might have been established there by the company or the emergency services. By now, someone should have mobilised.

We had to contact them.

Rebecca nodded without asking questions.

We took water, my notes and the steel survey tube. We left Callum breathing on the camp bed and propped open the operations-building door to keep air moving through the room.

The site Land Rover pickup started on the first attempt.

That felt like a small mercy.

We drove south along the single-track estate road, with the pale quartz-gravel moor and frost-whitened peat flats stretching away on either side. Years of heavy mine traffic had left the surface rutted and corrugated. The pickup shook over it at a speed that could have been higher if I had been prepared to destroy the suspension.

I was not. I held it at roughly 25 mph and watched the pale grit plume in the rear-view mirror.

Rebecca said nothing for the first twenty minutes. Then, very quietly, she said, "I think Callum walked a long way while he was gone."

The image of his ruined boots was already in my mind.

"He was missing for four hours," I said.

"I know."

After a moment she asked, "Do you think the others from the convoy walked back to the mine?"

"I don't know."

She fell silent again.

We found the convoy fourteen miles from Cairn Dhu.

I saw the first coach before I understood what I was looking at. It was merely a dark shape ahead, pulled on to the verge. Then I saw another behind it, and another.

Eight coaches and five company minibuses stood in a single line, evenly spaced with the neat deliberation of a drill formation.

I slowed and stopped thirty metres short of the first vehicle.

Every door was open.

I switched off the engine.

Silence arrived at once. There was no birdsong and, for that moment, almost no wind. Only the faint ticking of the cooling engine disturbed the emptiness of the moor.

Rebecca got out without speaking. I followed.

The coaches belonged to the company, the same ageing British high-floor works coaches used for staff rotations every fortnight. They had been adapted with extra clearance for the rough estate roads. Their paint was faded and filmed with pale grit. Their windows were shut.

Their open doors looked like mouths.

I climbed into the first coach. Luggage remained in the overhead racks. A jacket lay across one seat. A half-full water bottle stood in a holder. A mobile rested in the seat pocket, its screen dark.

I walked the length of the convoy, checking every vehicle.

They were all the same. Doors open. Belongings abandoned. Nobody inside. The handbrakes were applied. Keys remained in the ignitions. Every fuel gauge showed half a tank or more.

Rebecca stood beside the fourth coach, looking into the open luggage compartment beneath the passenger deck. Suitcases and holdalls were stacked neatly inside, untouched.

She did not speak. She did not need to.

The road beyond the convoy lay empty. There were no footprints in the thin crust of frost or the pale gravel beside the verge. No scuffs, dropped bags or disturbed peat. Nothing showed where anyone had left the vehicles.

I turned and examined the open moorland on both sides. Quartz gravel, exposed rock and frost-whitened peat ran towards the horizon.

Two hundred people had been aboard the convoy.

There was no visible sign of where they had gone.

I returned to the lead coach. The driver's logbook lay open on the dashboard, with a pen clipped to the top of the page.

I recognised the format. Every company driver used the same system: date and time in the left column, notes in the right, fuel stops, rest periods and anything else worth recording.

The final entry was dated Sunday, 8 March 2026, two days after the evacuation. The time was 23:47.

The handwriting was steady and careful, formed with the same square precision as the earlier entries.

It read:

"I hear it. We are going back to Level Zero."

I stood holding the logbook. The paper was dry, the ink dark and clean. I read the sentence three times, as though another reading might alter it.

The convoy had halted two days after leaving Cairn Dhu. Two hundred people had climbed out in the middle of the night and, if the entry was true, set off fourteen miles back towards the mine. They had not scattered in panic. They had gone together and deliberately.

Yet they were nowhere in sight.

I replaced the logbook precisely where I had found it and returned to the pickup.

Rebecca was waiting beside the passenger door with her arms folded. She looked at me.

"We need to get back to the camp now," I said.

She climbed in without asking why.

I drove faster on the return journey. The pickup struck the corrugations hard and the suspension groaned, but I did not slow. Rebecca braced herself with one hand on the grab handle and did not tell me to ease off. Pale grit streamed behind us, and neither of us looked back.

When we reached Cairn Dhu, the accommodation blocks were empty.

I checked Callum's camp bed first. He was gone. The figure had vanished from the desk. The outer door remained propped open exactly as I had left it, but the room was empty and cold air moved through it.

Rebecca searched the other blocks, moving quickly from room to room and calling names.

Nobody answered.

I already knew where they were.

We found them at No. 7 Shaft.

All six stood at the shaft mouth: Callum and the five other members of the skeleton crew who had remained behind with Rebecca and me. They formed a loose semicircle facing the open bore. Their eyes were open. They were breathing. They were perfectly still.

Each held a small figure of copper-bearing rock in cupped hands.

Rebecca approached the nearest, a drill technician named Gareth Price, whom I had worked with for three years. She stood directly before him and snapped her fingers in front of his face.

He did not blink.

He did not move. His chest rose and fell in shallow, regular breaths, and his eyes tracked nothing.

I looked beyond them at the ground surrounding the shaft mouth.

Figures were everywhere.

Not a handful or even a dozen. Scores of them had been arranged in a broad arc around the opening, every one upright. I began counting and stopped at forty.

They were identical: seven centimetres high, seated human forms carved from copper-bearing rock, with radial marks cut into their surfaces in the same pattern as the figure Callum had held on the 200-metre platform.

There were more than six people could have produced in four days, even working continuously. Given the precision of the carving, there were perhaps more than they could have produced at all.

I walked past the shaft towards the generator compound.

I could hear a low diesel thrum from fifty metres away, the noise that had formed part of Cairn Dhu's background every day of my four years there. But it sounded wrong.

Thinner.

As I drew closer, I understood why. Only Generator 1, the primary unit, remained operational. Generators 2 to 6 were silent.

Their fuel lines had been disconnected. They had not been torn out or cut but carefully unscrewed at the couplings. Their tanks had been drained.

I followed the dark staining across the compacted ground.

Someone had dug a shallow channel running in a straight line from the generator compound to No. 7 Shaft. Diesel had been poured into it. The channel extended across fifty metres of open ground and ended at the very edge of the shaft bore.

Generator 1 had been left running deliberately. It alone was supplying power to the site lighting, the upper-shaft ventilation and the other essential systems.

Someone had wanted the lights and ventilation to remain on.

I returned to the operations building. Rebecca followed without speaking.

The operations-room door stood open. I knew I had locked it before we left.

I pushed it wider and stepped inside.

The plans for No. 7 Shaft had been removed from the filing cabinet and spread across every table. They had not been stacked or folded. They lay flat, edge to edge, covering every horizontal surface.

Someone had annotated them in pencil.

There were corrections to the bore geometry, revised depth measurements and adjustments to the lateral-drift angles, all more precise than anything I had recorded. The four service platforms were consistently marked at 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres. The lateral drifts remained at 350 and 580 metres.

At the bottom of every sheet, in the same handwriting, appeared the same notation:

"1,040 m - open now."

I moved slowly around the room, examining each plan. The writing was small, controlled and maddeningly familiar. I thought I might have seen it in the convoy logbook or on a crew shift sheet, but I could not place it.

The historical archive drawer at the rear of the room had been disturbed. Its lock was damaged and its face was bowed, but the drawer remained closed. When I forced it open, the compartment was empty.

The original 1968 survey notes were missing.

I stood staring into the bare drawer, then went outside.

Rebecca waited at the shaft mouth. I passed the six unresponsive workers and joined her beside the arc of figures.

I counted them slowly. Then I counted them again.

There were 208.

Cairn Dhu employed exactly 208 people.

Rebecca was already looking at me. Her face was pale and drawn, her jaw set in an expression I had seen many times during my four years at the mine.

The sun had passed noon, its cold light flattened by high cloud. The six workers remained motionless at the bore, their hands cupped around their figures and their eyes open and empty. The 208 carved figures sat in their arc around the shaft mouth, their radial engravings facing outwards, arranged with the same precision as the abandoned convoy.

Neither Rebecca nor I looked away from the other's face.

I returned to my office to retrieve the survey tube. The drawer in which I had locked it slid open without resistance. The tube lay exactly where I had left it, its steel pitted by decades of mineral staining.

I carried it into the operations room and placed it beside the annotated plans. The old hand-drawn map was rougher in execution, but when I laid it over the modern sheets, the geometry aligned perfectly.

Every angle matched. Every measurement matched. The new pencil corrections were more exact than anything I had produced in four years at the site. They were more exact even than the official survey data.

I stood over them, trying to decide who could have made the annotations. It had to have been one or more of the six workers during the period in which they had become unresponsive, yet the writing showed no haste or confusion. Whoever had made the corrections had known exactly what they were doing.

Behind me came a sharp metallic crack.

I turned.

The archive drawer had forced itself farther out of the cabinet. Its damaged lock had broken completely, but not as though someone had attacked it from the room. The metal was bent outwards. Something inside the drawer appeared to have pushed it open.

That was impossible.

Inside lay the original survey notes that had not been there minutes earlier.

They were dated 1968 and bore references to both the British Geological Survey and the mine company's original survey team.

Rebecca came into the room as I lifted them out. I read them standing by the open drawer, one hand still resting on its distorted metal front.

The notes described a density anomaly at 1,040 metres: a resonant cavity of unknown origin in the deep fractured strata. It was roughly circular and approximately sixty metres in diameter.

Surveyors working at depth had reported rhythmic vibrations during the initial exploration. Several independent witnesses had described those vibrations as apparently intentional.

The word "intentional" had been underlined twice.

The survey recommended permanent avoidance and recorded no further investigation. No. 7 Shaft had therefore been engineered to terminate at 980 metres, exactly sixty metres short of the cavity.

At the foot of the page, in careful handwriting, was the decision:

"Bore termination approved by site supervisor. No objections from survey team."

They had known.

They had mapped the cavity, recorded its position and then spent nearly six decades ensuring nobody reached it.

Rebecca took the 1968 notes while I laid the corrected plans beside the old map. The fracture-propagation markings were clear. The blast had not created a normal extension beneath the engineered shaft floor. Instead, cracks ran down through and around the 980-metre termination, forming a narrow branching connection to the cavity below.

The pattern looked almost deliberate, as though the collapse had known where it needed to go.

The detonation four days earlier had done more than seal the ventilation tunnel. It had opened a path to the chamber the 1968 survey had deliberately avoided.

I traced the pencil lines with one finger, following them towards the void at 1,040 metres. I tried to imagine that sealed place suddenly connected to the shaft after decades, perhaps after thousands of years, perhaps after longer than any human measure mattered.

All of it led back to Level Zero.

I turned to the geological substrate inset on the old map. The formation containing the resonant cavity did not end beneath Cairn Dhu. It branched through the plateau towards the north-east, south-west and west, threading under the moor like roots beneath skin.

Twenty-eight kilometres away, directly above the same formation, lay Allt Ban aggregate quarry.

It was run by another operator, but I knew from regional safety briefings that its gatehouse was permanently staffed. The post had a landline and a hardwired radio link physically separate from Cairn Dhu's communications system.

If the fixed link at Allt Ban still worked, we could contact Inverness regional emergency control.

Rebecca stood at the window, watching the six motionless workers at the shaft mouth in the failing afternoon light. She had the 1968 notes folded in one hand.

"The surveyors called it a resonant cavity," I said. "Unknown origin. They felt something at depth and recommended permanent avoidance. No. 7 Shaft was meant to stop at 980 metres. They made certain it never reached Level Zero."

"And the blast opened it," she said.

It was not a question.

"Yes."

She turned from the window. I pointed out Allt Ban on the geological inset and explained about the gatehouse, the landline and the fixed radio. She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she nodded once.

"We can't take the pickup."

"The convoy isn't blocking the road."

"No," she said. "It's marking a destination. Two hundred people left those vehicles and walked back towards Cairn Dhu. If we take the road, we may do exactly the same."

She was right. I had not wanted to express the thought aloud, but she was right.

We could not prove the estate road itself was responsible, yet everyone who travelled it now seemed to be drawn back towards No. 7 Shaft, whether they intended to return or not.

"Then we walk," I said. "Twenty-eight kilometres across the plateau. Cross-country."

Night would bring dangerous cold and poor visibility, but the open moor gave us the best chance of keeping Cairn Dhu behind us and Allt Ban ahead. We would have to navigate carefully around peat hags and bog, keep moving to avoid hypothermia and carry enough water despite the weight.

Rebecca went to the supply room and returned with two packs, two water bottles and two head torches. We filled the bottles from the accommodation-block tank and packed as much food as we could carry: oat bars, bags of nuts and raisins, and several tins of soup that we could eat cold if necessary.

I rolled the corrected plans and secured them, then placed them and the steel survey tube in my pack. Rebecca folded the 1968 notes into an inner pocket of her jacket.

Before leaving, I went to the shaft mouth one final time.

The six workers remained in their loose semicircle, facing the bore. Their eyes were open. Their hands were cupped before them, each holding a seated figure carved from copper-bearing rock.

I checked every pulse.

All six were steady. All six workers breathed in the same slow, even rhythm.

We could not move them.

Rebecca and I were not strong enough to carry six unresponsive adults across twenty-eight kilometres of exposed moorland. Even if we had been, I did not know whether moving them would help. The convoy had been full of people who had left their vehicles and walked fourteen miles back towards Cairn Dhu of their own accord. Taking the skeleton crew away from the shaft might not keep them safe.

It might only mean they would walk back while we were not looking.

I left them where they were. The arc of figures around the mouth of No. 7 Shaft remained perfectly arranged: 208 small figures carved from copper-bearing rock, one for every person employed at Cairn Dhu Mine.

I counted them again to make certain. The number had not changed.

Rebecca was waiting for me at the edge of the plateau, her pack already on and her head torch switched off to conserve the battery. The sun was setting behind the western Highland ridges, staining the sky a deep orange that would fade to black within the hour.

To the north-east, the pale quartz-gravel moor and frost-whitened peat flats were already grey with shadow. I took one last look at the six crew members standing motionless at the shaft mouth, with the arc of figures spread across the ground around them.

Then Rebecca and I turned north-east and began walking into the dark.

The temperature fell rapidly after sunset. At roughly 850 metres above sea level, the Monadhliath plateau was exposed to every movement of the wind, and the wind chill worsened as the light went. We kept a steady pace, conserving water and body heat, speaking as little as possible. Pale gravel, rock and frozen peat stretched away in every direction.

The sky was clear enough for the stars to show with startling brightness. I carried the steel survey tube, the corrected plans and our share of the food. Rebecca carried most of the water, the 1968 survey notes and the emergency kit.

An hour after leaving the camp, the ground began to vibrate.

It was not the microseismic noise I had learnt to filter out during four years at Cairn Dhu. That was stochastic and irregular, a background texture you ceased noticing after enough time underground.

This was rhythmic.

A slow, regular pulse rose through the gravel and frozen peat into the soles of my boots. The interval was the same each time, patient and even.

Rebecca felt it at the same moment I did. She caught my arm.

We looked at one another and then down, as though there might be something to see. There was not. The pale ground lay smooth and undisturbed beneath the starlight.

We walked faster.

The vibration continued beneath us, steady and unhurried, neither strengthening nor fading. I counted the interval between pulses and found it consistent. Six seconds, perhaps seven. I timed it against my heartbeat for several minutes and then stopped.

That had been a mistake. The rhythm was too close to a natural cadence, too easy to mistake for something organic.

We walked for hours. Rebecca said nothing about the vibration, and neither did I. There was little to say. We both felt it. We both understood what it meant, or did not mean, or might mean. Discussing it would not change the fact that we had many kilometres left to cross, or that turning back would place us at the mouth of No. 7 Shaft by morning. Neither of us wanted to be there when daylight came.

The moor remained empty. The stars moved overhead. My legs kept carrying me forwards.

At the fourteen-kilometre midpoint, in full darkness, Rebecca stopped.

I halted beside her and followed her gaze.

A small figure sat upright on the pale gravel directly in front of her. It was not half buried in peat or lying on its side. It had been set upright on a patch of bare quartz as though somebody had placed it there.

It was seven centimetres tall, identical in size to all the others, with the same seated posture and the same radial marks cut into its copper-bearing surface. The carvings were visible in the starlight.

There were no footprints around it.

The frost and gravel in every direction were smooth and unbroken.

Rebecca crouched and picked it up.

"Put it down," I said.

She held it for a moment. The markings caught the light, and I saw her thumb trace the lines across its surface in the same way mine had traced the figure we had taken from Callum at the camp.

Then she placed it back on the gravel, upright and in precisely the position in which she had found it.

We looked at each other. Her face was difficult to read in the darkness. I did not know what mine showed. Probably the same thing.

We walked on.

Fourteen kilometres remained. They passed in silence. The vibration beneath the ground did not stop, and the open Highland plateau stayed empty.

We did not speak about the figure or what it meant that it had been waiting upright without tracks at the exact midpoint of a route we had chosen only hours earlier.

I thought about it, though. I thought about it for the rest of the crossing.

The figure had been placed there. It had not been dropped, buried and uncovered by weather, or kicked aside by an animal. It had been positioned upright in the centre of our path. There were no boot marks, no crushed frost, no displacement of the gravel, nothing to suggest that anyone had walked out there and left it.

That meant it had stood there long enough for frost and wind to erase every trace of its arrival.

Or it meant something else had put it there.

I did not allow myself to finish that thought.

We kept walking. The stars turned above us. The vibration pulsed beneath us, steady and patient, and I tried not to think about how much it resembled something waiting for us to arrive. Waiting for us to understand.

The blocky outline of Allt Ban quarry gatehouse appeared against the pre-dawn sky. A light shone inside, and a diesel generator rattled beside the building.

Rebecca and I stopped for a moment and stared at it.

The Allt Ban gatehouse was the sort of building one could miss even when looking for it: a concrete-block structure perhaps four metres by six, with a corrugated metal roof and a generator standing outside. The light was still on when we reached it at dawn.

The door was unlocked.

I pushed it open. The hinges made a noise like a wounded animal.

The security officer was at the desk. The duty roster beside the door identified him as Martin Hales. He sat upright in a metal folding chair, breathing, his eyes open and fixed on nothing.

In each hand he held a copper-bearing stone figure, identical in size and shape to those at Cairn Dhu. Their radial markings caught the light from the bulb overhead.

"Martin?"

He did not respond.

Rebecca moved past me and checked the pulse at his wrist without attempting to remove either figure. She looked at me and nodded once. Alive.

The hardwired radio on the desk was switched on. Its handset rested in the cradle with electrical tape holding down the transmit key, broadcasting a continuous carrier over the open frequency.

The transmission counter showed sixty hours. The unit's internal log, however, gave the start time as 18:18 on Thursday, 5 March 2026.

I stared at both readings.

We had reached the gatehouse shortly after dawn on Wednesday, 11 March. Sixty hours earlier would have been Sunday evening. The logged date was the evening before the collapse at Cairn Dhu on Friday, 6 March. Both records could not be correct, yet the machine presented both as fact.

More importantly, the radio had apparently been jammed before the blast, before there was any reason to send an emergency transmission from Allt Ban, and before anyone from Cairn Dhu could have crossed twenty-eight kilometres of moor to reach it.

I peeled the tape from the handset and lifted it from the cradle. The carrier vanished, leaving only a faint hiss of static.

I pressed the transmit key.

"This is Thomas Mercer from Cairn Dhu Mine calling Inverness regional emergency control. Does anyone copy?"

I waited.

The static continued. Then a voice came through, thin and controlled, belonging to someone who had been awake far too long while managing a situation he did not understand.

"Inverness control. We copy. Go ahead."

I told the operator where we were. I said we needed immediate assistance and that the fixed radio link at Allt Ban was working. I told him we could coordinate from the gatehouse.

There was a pause. Then he said, very carefully, that a regional emergency was already in progress.

Several Highland mining and quarrying sites had reported communications failures and missing or unresponsive workers. Cairn Dhu was not isolated. This was not a single event.

Rebecca spread the geological substrate map across the desk and smoothed it flat with both palms. I watched her trace the deep formation with one finger, beginning beneath Level Zero and moving outwards through the strata. It branched north-east, south-west and west beneath the plateau.

She followed one branch to Allt Ban. Others reached four active extraction sites marked on the map. The formation continued towards the Great Glen and Inverness itself.

The control-room operator said a national geotechnical emergency coordinator had been briefed on the other sites and was waiting to speak to us. The line clicked and fell silent for a moment.

Then another voice came through.

"This is Dr Alistair Reed, national geotechnical emergency coordination. I'm listening. Go ahead."

His tone was measured and formal, the voice of someone accustomed to combining reports from several sources and making decisions with incomplete evidence.

I told him about the figures. I described the map from the steel survey tube, the 1968 British Geological Survey and mine-company survey, Level Zero and the blast fractures that had penetrated below the engineered shaft floor four days earlier.

I told him about the corrected plans in the operations room at Cairn Dhu. The annotations were more precise than the original survey data, and the same words appeared at the bottom of every sheet: "1,040 m - open now."

I told him about the convoy fourteen miles from the mine. It had stopped two days after the evacuation, and all 200 occupants had abandoned the eight ageing high-floor works coaches and five company minibuses before walking back towards Cairn Dhu. The final entry in a driver's logbook, written at 23:47 on Sunday, 8 March, read: "Level Zero. I hear it. We're going back."

I told him about the figure at the exact midpoint of our crossing, standing upright without footprints around it. I told him there were 208 figures at the mouth of No. 7 Shaft and that 208 was the precise number of people employed at Cairn Dhu.

I told him everything.

Dr Reed listened without interrupting. When I had finished, there was a long silence, filled only by the faint hiss of the open channel.

Then he said, "Our working theory is mass hypoxia caused by naturally occurring ground gas released through fractured strata. It may produce confusion, hallucination and dissociative behaviour across several sites at once. That accounts for the symptoms we're seeing."

"It is wrong," I said.

Another pause.

"A Royal Engineers mine-rescue and structural-sealing detachment is already being deployed to Cairn Dhu with RAF support," he said. "They have a high-pressure expanding-foam system used to seal unstable mine voids after collapse. Their current plan is to seal No. 7 Shaft from the surface."

I closed my eyes. I could see the bore geometry, including the lateral drifts at 350 and 580 metres and the service platforms at 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres.

"That will not work."

I explained that the two lateral drifts would bleed pressure from any surface deployment. The foam would not reach the shaft floor at 980 metres with enough force to seal the cavity sixty metres below it.

No. 7 Shaft did not continue conventionally beyond its engineered floor. The blast fractures had punched a narrow connection through the strata into Level Zero. The only way to deliver the charge was to lower the specialised payload through that connection and deploy it directly at 1,040 metres.

That meant sending someone down the shaft with the unit.

I heard Rebecca moving behind me.

When I turned, she had taken the emergency rope-access harness from the wall beside the door. She was inspecting and fitting it with the practised economy of someone who had performed the checks hundreds of times. It was not the final payload - that would arrive with the Royal Engineers - but her decision was already clear.

"I'll go," I said.

She looked at me without stopping.

"I'm the site's rope-access and mechanical safety specialist. I hold the IRATA qualification. You're the geotechnical engineer. You stay on the radio and guide the rescue team."

She was right. She had three years of rope-access work behind her. I had none.

The argument I wanted to make - that I should go because I could not bear to watch her do it - was not an argument at all. It was a feeling, and feelings did not change shaft geometry.

I said nothing.

Dr Reed was still speaking about deployment times and logistics. I told him we would be ready to coordinate when the detachment arrived. I gave him the radio frequency and the coordinates of Allt Ban quarry gatehouse and said I would remain there as surface coordinator.

The channel went quiet again.

Then Dr Reed said, "Understood. The detachment will reach Cairn Dhu within four hours. Stand by."

The connection ended.

Rebecca finished fastening the harness and stood looking down at the map.

Then she looked at me.

"You stay on this radio. You do not leave it for any reason. When they call, you answer."

"Understood."

"Understood?"

"Yes."

She nodded once. She removed the harness again, packed it with her equipment and walked out into the dawn. An Allt Ban site vehicle would take her along a quarry service track to the Engineers' rendezvous point, avoiding the Cairn Dhu estate road as far as possible. Neither of us could prove that the road drew people back to the mine, but after the convoy we were unwilling to test it.

I remained in the concrete room with Martin Hales seated behind me, breathing with his eyes open and a figure held in each hand. The generator continued its low rattle outside. The bulb overhead flickered once, then steadied.

I sat at the desk and waited.

Four hours later, the Royal Engineers reached Cairn Dhu. The radio crackled, and a clipped, professional voice identified herself as Major Helen Ward, the detachment commander.

I talked her through the bore geometry, the fracture map, the lateral drifts at 350 and 580 metres, and the four service platforms at 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres. I explained the engineered shaft floor at 980 metres and the narrow blast fracture leading to the Level Zero cavity at 1,040 metres.

Then I told her what they would find around the shaft mouth.

There was a long silence.

At last Major Ward returned to the radio. Her voice was very quiet.

"We've counted them," she said.

She did not say how many.

Rebecca's voice came over the radio twenty minutes later. She was at the mouth of No. 7 Shaft, wearing the harness, helmet and communications gear. The Engineers had secured their specialised expanding-foam payload to her descent assembly. The team was ready.

I confirmed the procedure with Major Ward, reviewing the pressure monitors, cable-load indicators, deployment depth and check-in schedule at all four platforms.

Then Rebecca began her descent.

She checked in at 200 metres. Her voice was steady and clear. She noted, without elaboration, that the rock at the platform was warm - not warmed by sunlight from above, but warm from within.

She checked in at 400 metres.

Then at 600.

At 800 metres her voice remained calm. She said the vibration was stronger at depth and that she could feel it through the harness cable. She said it was not unpleasant.

Then she said she was continuing.

Below the 800-metre platform, the radio went silent.

There was no static and no burst of interference. The carrier remained present. The system was functioning. Nothing came through.

It was the same absolute silence we had heard from the satellite handset at Cairn Dhu.

I stood beside the desk with the receiver pressed to my ear.

"Rebecca?"

Nothing.

"Rebecca, do you copy?"

Nothing.

I pressed the transmit key again and again, saying her name. The silence at the other end remained complete.

Major Ward came on. Her voice was controlled and professional. She said the descent cable was still loaded. Rebecca remained attached to it and was still at depth.

The cable had not gone slack.

They were waiting.

I told her to maintain position and continue monitoring the load. Then I lowered the receiver to the desk, pressed both palms against the concrete surface and tried to breathe.

Forty minutes passed.

I counted them on the clock above the desk, watching the second hand complete its slow circuits, each minute seeming longer than the one before.

Then Major Ward returned.

The monitoring equipment at the shaft mouth had registered a pressure change at depth: a sharp spike at 1,040 metres, consistent with the payload deploying inside Level Zero, followed by rapid equalisation as the expanding foam filled the cavity and its narrow connection to the shaft.

I felt the change through my boots before she finished speaking.

The low, rhythmic pulse that had risen through the gatehouse floor for hours stopped.

It did not weaken or fade. It ceased instantly.

Major Ward came back on the channel.

"The void is sealed," she said.

There was a pause.

Then, much more quietly, she added, "The cable has gone slack."

I stood at the desk in Allt Ban quarry gatehouse with the receiver pressed to my ear. The open channel filled the room with silence. The vibration had vanished from the floor beneath me.

I did not put the receiver down.

The RAF helicopter came for me on Friday afternoon, 13 March. Major Ward had instructed me to remain at the gatehouse while the Engineers conducted their search and arranged transport. I was still standing beside the radio when I heard the rotors approaching.

I replaced the receiver and walked outside into the cold daylight.

The RAF pilot said little during the flight to Cairn Dhu. I sat in the rear with my pack between my boots and watched the plateau pass below: rock, peat and pale gravel stretching towards the horizon.

From the air I could see the route Rebecca and I had walked. Two sets of boot prints and compressed frost ran north-east across the open ground.

Only ours. No others.

When we reached the mine, the helicopter circled once before landing.

I could see the shaft mouth below. The Royal Engineers had established a perimeter with traffic cones and red-and-white barrier tape. The six unresponsive workers had been removed and placed in a Scottish Ambulance Service transfer vehicle.

The figures remained.

I counted them from the air: 208, still arranged in a flawless semicircle.

The helicopter landed near the accommodation blocks. Major Ward met me there. She was about fifty, with grey hair and a face that revealed nothing.

"We searched for six hours," she said. "Cameras, remote equipment, the entire accessible shaft. We went as deep as we could before the wall condition became unsafe."

I nodded. I already knew what she would say.

"We didn't find her."

I looked beyond her towards No. 7 Shaft. The barrier tape fluttered violently in the wind.

"The descent cable was intact," Major Ward continued. "There was no breakage and no equipment failure. The end connection had been deliberately unclipped."

I kept looking at the shaft.

"The report will state that," she said. "We don't know how it happened or why. But that is what the evidence shows."

I did not ask whether they would keep looking. Her expression told me they would not.

"Thank you," I said, because I could think of nothing else.

Major Ward nodded and returned to the perimeter.

I stood for a while staring at the shaft mouth. Then I went to the accommodation block to collect my belongings.

Over the following week, the emergency services recovered the workers. From Cairn Dhu there were 206 survivors: the 200 convoy occupants and the six unresponsive members of the skeleton crew. Rebecca and I accounted for the remaining two employees, although she was missing rather than recovered.

Workers from the other affected Highland sites were found in the same condition - alive and breathing, their eyes open, but unresponsive to their names or to touch. Scottish Ambulance Service crews transferred them to NHS hospitals in Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee.

By then I was in London, staying at a hotel near the relevant Health and Safety Executive offices while the inspectorate debriefed me.

The debriefing lasted three days. Different people asked the same questions in different ways.

What did you see?

What did you hear?

What did the map show?

What did the figures look like?

How many were there?

When did the vibration begin?

When did it stop?

I answered every question.

I showed them the forty-seven photographs on my mobile. Rebecca had kept the original 1968 notes with her, and they were recovered from her equipment at the shaft mouth after her descent. I gave the investigators the steel survey tube, the map wrapped in waxed cloth and the corrected plans I had carried to Allt Ban. The Royal Engineers supplied Rebecca's recovered notes and their monitoring records.

I described the late-1960s British Geological Survey and National Coal Board-era drafting conventions, the cavity at 1,040 metres and the fractures driven below the shaft's 980-metre engineered floor by the collapse. I told them about the convoy logbook and its final entry.

I told them about the solitary figure standing without tracks at the midpoint of the moor.

They listened. They took notes. They did not tell me what they believed any of it meant.

Five days after the extraction, Raigmore Hospital telephoned. Callum Park had woken and was asking for someone from Cairn Dhu.

I told them I would come.

I travelled north the following morning. Raigmore stood on the outskirts of Inverness, and I found Callum in a recovery ward with an NHS nurse taking his blood pressure.

The first thing he said when he saw me was, "I need to give it back."

The nurse looked at me. I looked at Callum.

"Give what back?" I asked.

Callum looked down at his hands. They were empty. He studied them for a long time, turning them over and examining first his palms and then their backs.

"I don't know," he said at last.

He said nothing more.

I stayed for another twenty minutes, but he continued staring at his hands. The nurse said he had been like that since waking: confused, disorientated and asking for something he could not name. The doctors expected it to pass.

I returned to London that afternoon. During the journey I heard a news report about closures across several Highland extraction sites. They had been shut permanently because of structural instability.

Cairn Dhu was not named. The report did not mention the workers, the figures or anything else that had happened. It spoke only of structural failures and routine safety measures.

Nothing to worry about.

The Royal Engineers catalogued the figures. Major Ward sent me the report a week later.

There were 208 at the shaft mouth, exactly as I had counted. A further 1,400 had been recovered in descending layers throughout the mine: on the service platforms at 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres, in both lateral drifts at 350 and 580 metres, in the processing cavern and down to the collapsed shaft floor at 980 metres.

All 1,400 were additional to the 208 above, making 1,608 in total.

Every one stood upright. Every one was identical. Every one had been placed with the same precision as the solitary figure at the midpoint of the moor.

The catalogue ran to eleven pages. I read it twice.

Then I filed it and did not look at it again.

Cairn Dhu Mine closed permanently. The official reason was loss of structural integrity following the ventilation-tunnel blast and subsequent collapse. Nobody challenged it.

The other affected sites closed for similar reasons. After psychiatric and neurological observation, the workers were discharged and sent home. The official medical diagnosis was a dissociative episode associated with acute hypoxia, caused by naturally occurring ground gas released through fractured strata.

It was a coherent explanation. It plausibly accounted for the workers' symptoms without requiring anybody to believe what could not be explained.

It did not account for the figures, the impossible handwriting, the radio transmission apparently begun before the collapse, the exact placement on the moor or Rebecca's disappearance.

Nobody said that aloud.

The HSE offered me a desk post at its London office. The work involved environmental compliance reports, reviewing applications, cross-referencing survey data and writing summaries.

I accepted without asking questions.

My supervisor did not ask why I had abandoned fieldwork. Perhaps he already knew. Perhaps Major Ward had spoken to him, or perhaps he had read the debriefing transcripts and reached his own conclusion.

Whatever the reason, he never raised it.

The work was easier than I had expected. I had thought sitting behind a desk would feel like a kind of death after nineteen years in the field, but it did not.

The office was quiet. The reports were clear. The figures added up or they did not. Nobody's life depended upon whether I spotted a mistake in the third column on page seven.

Silence, which I had once regarded as deprivation, became something I needed.

I read compliance reports. I checked data against statutory standards. I signed off environmental impact assessments. Beyond my window, London continued through its weekdays: traffic in the street, pedestrians on the pavements, the low continuous murmur of the city.

Inside, the office remained quiet around me.

I did not think about the shaft.

I did not think about the figures, the map or the vibration beneath the moor.

I did not think about Rebecca descending into darkness with the foam payload, the radio becoming silent, or Major Ward's voice when she said the cable had gone slack.

I read the reports one after another, page by page. The data said an operation was compliant or it was not.

I trusted the data.

The envelope arrived on Tuesday, 11 May 2027, fourteen months after Cairn Dhu closed.

I was at my desk in the HSE office, reviewing an environmental assessment for a proposed geothermal and mineral-water abstraction scheme in the Great Glen, when a post-room clerk placed it in my in-tray.

It was a padded envelope with an Inverness postmark and no return address.

I set it aside and finished the paragraph I was reading. The report described predicted changes to groundwater pressure and mineral content. All measurements were within permitted limits.

I signed the page and moved to the next document in the stack.

The envelope remained in my in-tray for perhaps twenty minutes before I opened it.

Inside was a seven-centimetre figure carved from copper-bearing rock, seated with radial lines cut across its surface. Beneath it lay a folded sheet of paper.

I recognised the figure immediately. I had counted 208 of them around No. 7 Shaft, and I had held the one taken from Callum before locking it in a drawer at Cairn Dhu. I had watched that same figure escape the locked drawer more than once.

I had not expected to see another.

I had not expected anything from Cairn Dhu to follow me to London.

I unfolded the paper.

It was a geological substrate map, far newer than the survey recovered from the steel tube and produced using modern instrumentation capable of precision to within a metre. Its contours were clean and exact in a way the 1968 drawing had never been.

The map showed the deep formation extending far beyond every published geological chart I had seen. It ran through the Scottish Highlands, beneath the Southern Uplands and northern England, and out below the North Sea coast.

Eleven sections had been circled in red. Beside each circle, a depth had been written in a careful hand, followed by a question mark.

The cavities extended across Britain and beneath the North Sea, implying a buried network far larger than the chamber below Cairn Dhu.

I counted the circles twice.

There were eleven.

The handwriting looked familiar. I had studied it for weeks during the investigation, on the corrected plans spread across the operations-room table at Cairn Dhu. The same neat script had appeared at the bottom of every sheet: "1,040 m - open now."

I had assumed one of the skeleton crew had written the annotations during the unresponsive interval. Perhaps Callum, perhaps Gareth Price, perhaps one of the others who had stood at the shaft mouth with figures cupped in their hands. I had never matched it to anyone because handwriting analysis had not been a priority.
