I had worked nights at Calder Loch Nuclear Generating Station for twelve years, and I had never seen anything like it. The secondary cooling system had triple redundancy, backup sensors, automatic fail-safes, the lot. If one sensor went wrong, the others were meant to catch it. But all three readings were moving together, as though they were following a pattern I could not see.
I tapped the glass face of the main display. Sometimes that had helped with the older analogue gauges, though this one was digital. Force of habit, I suppose.
The figures kept changing. 26. 30. 18.
I pulled out the logbook and began writing down the readings, trying to catch the pattern. My handwriting looked like a spider had crawled through ink in the dim control-room light, but I had learnt to be thorough about everything.
Nuclear power does not give you second chances.
The whole building hummed around me with the steady drone you stopped noticing after a while. Pumps cycling, ventilation running, the low throb of machinery that never ceased. On the day shift there might be thirty or forty people scattered around the station.
At night it was just me and six other members of the night crew spread across the entire site. It made you feel small.
The temperature rose to 36 degrees C.
That got my attention.
I leant forwards in my chair and narrowed my eyes at the screen. Thirty-six was pushing into the yellow band. Not dangerous yet, but high enough to watch closely. Then it fell back to 22.
I had seen equipment failures before. Usually they failed in predictable ways. Sensors went dead, readings stuck at one figure or drifted gradually over time. This was different.
The readings were all over the place, but they remained within or close to the permitted operating range. It was as though the system were confused rather than broken.
My shift supervisor, Moira Campbell, always said, "Trust your instruments first. Trust your gut second."
But when the instruments behaved like this, what were you meant to trust?
I reached for the radio clipped to my belt. The thing was ancient and weighed about as much as a brick, but it worked. You had to hold the aerial at the right angle to get a clean signal across the station.
"Control to shift supervisor, over."
Static crackled for a few seconds. Then Moira's voice came through, clear and steady as ever.
"Shift supervisor receiving. Go ahead, control."
"I'm seeing unusual readings on the secondary cooling loop. Temperature is fluctuating outside normal parameters."
"Received. What sort of fluctuations?"
I looked down at my notes.
"Between 18 and 36 degrees C over the past twenty minutes. No apparent pattern. All three sensors are showing the same behaviour."
There was a pause. Moira had worked at Calder Loch for twenty-four years, since before I had left secondary school. If she had seen anything like this, she would know what to do.
"Control, log the anomaly and continue monitoring. Are any other systems showing irregularities?"
I scanned the board. Dozens of gauges and displays showed pressure, flow rates, reactor temperature and containment status. Everything else looked normal.
"Negative. Just the secondary loop."
"Understood. Maintain standard observation protocol. Report any change immediately."
"Received."
I clipped the radio back to my belt and turned to the logbook again. Standard observation protocol meant recording readings every fifteen minutes and noting anything out of the ordinary. It was not exciting work, but that was the point. Nuclear power was supposed to be boring.
The temperature display read 23 degrees C. It held steady for perhaps ten seconds, then jumped to 31. I wrote it down.
Beyond the reinforced control-room windows, I could see the lights of the main station buildings across the site. Approximately 800 metres of frozen ground lay between us, with the station access road cutting a straight line through the snow. The car-park lamps cast yellow circles across the tarmac. Beyond them, everything vanished into darkness.
It was the kind of cold February night that made your teeth ache at the thought of stepping outside. The wind chill was near -29 degrees C.
Most of Calder Loch would be heavily frozen, the ice stretching towards the distant Highland settlements like a white desert. Only the water immediately above the warmed intake zone remained dark, beneath fractured and thinning ice. I had grown up in the area, and I still was not accustomed to how empty everything looked in winter.
The reading rose to 34 degrees C, then settled back to 24.
Perhaps something was wrong with the display system itself. It could have been a software fault or interference from somewhere, though I could not imagine what would produce interference like that. The control systems were comprehensively shielded.
I reached for the external CCTV controls. We had eight numbered feeds covering the station. Feed one showed the car park, feed two the main gate, feed three the cooling-water intake, feed four the exposed secondary-loop pipework and its sensor overlay, feed five the cooling-system maintenance galleries, feed six the storage compound, feed seven the station access road and feed eight the wide view across Calder Loch.
Most nights they showed nothing but snow and shadows, but checking them every hour was part of the routine.
Feed one showed the car park, empty except for the cars belonging to the other six members of the night crew. Feed two showed nothing moving at the main gate. Feed six looked the same as always.
Then I selected feed eight.
For a second, I stopped breathing.
The ice was glowing.
It was not bright, not like a floodlight. It looked more like moonlight, except there was no moon that night. A soft, pale blue-green radiance seemed to rise from beneath the surface, spreading in patches across the frozen loch. Some areas were brighter than others, like points of heat beneath stained glass.
I blinked hard and looked again.
It was still there.
The light shifted and pulsed as though it were alive. My first thought was that something had gone wrong with the camera. Perhaps the sensor was detecting infrared heat, or electromagnetic interference was corrupting the image. But the glow looked real.
I had been staring at Calder Loch from that building for twelve years. I knew what it was supposed to look like.
This was not it.
The secondary-loop temperature climbed to 36 degrees C, and suddenly I was no longer thinking about an ordinary equipment fault. I stared at the monitor until my eyes began to water.
There had to be something wrong with the feed. A defect in the lens, perhaps, or interference from the station's electrical systems. What I was seeing could not be real.
Yet the frozen surface of Calder Loch continued to shine. It was not the hard white glare of the security lights or the amber wash from the older lamps around the station. It was something else entirely, a faint bioluminescence spreading beneath the ice like phosphorescent algae in warm seawater.
Soft blue-green pulses reminded me of nature programmes showing plankton flaring beneath the wake of a boat. Except it was 14 February 2026 in the Scottish Highlands, and the ice away from the warmed intake zone was close to 60 centimetres thick in places.
I rubbed my eyes and looked again.
Still there.
The glow was not uniform. It moved in waves, rippling outwards from different points beneath the loch. Each pulse was a little brighter than the last, like stones being dropped into luminous water.
But the water was sealed beneath ice, and there was nobody out there to drop anything.
My hand moved towards the radio before I had consciously decided to report it, then stopped. What the hell was I supposed to say?
Hello, Moira. Calder Loch is glowing like a lit switchboard.
She would think I had been drinking too much coffee or sampling whatever someone had abandoned in the unlabelled bottle at the back of the break-room fridge.
But I had to document it. Protocol required that anything unusual near the station be logged and reported, even if it appeared unrelated to operations.
I reached for the incident logbook, then hesitated again. How did you record something that should not exist?
The radio came alive before I could decide.
"Callum, do you receive?"
Moira's voice cut through the static, sharp and clear. There was no trace of her usual end-of-shift weariness.
I grabbed the handset.
"Yes, I'm here."
"Are you observing the same phenomenon on the CCTV that I can see from here?"
My stomach dropped. She could see it as well.
Whatever was happening, it was not merely a camera fault or the hallucination of a tired man on a night shift.
"The loch?"
"Affirmative. It began about two minutes ago from my position. Are you getting a clear view on the external feeds?"
I moved between feeds three, four and eight, checking the angles around the cooling-water intake and the exposed pipework. Every exterior view showed the same impossible blue-green glow spreading beneath the ice like foxfire.
"Clear as day. Have you any idea what could..."
The control-room lights flickered.
It lasted less than a second, just long enough for the fluorescent tubes to dim and throw the room into shadow before brightening again. I looked up at them and waited for another flutter.
They held steady.
Then they died completely.
The sudden darkness struck like a physical blow. Twelve years of night shifts had accustomed me to the control room's constant illumination, the light from monitors, indicator lamps and status panels.
Now nearly all of it had vanished. Only the emergency exit signs remained, along with the strange blue-green radiance filtering through the reinforced windows.
I did not panic. Training took over automatically, as it always did when a system failed.
Count to three. Assess the situation. Follow procedure.
Normal site power had been lost. The emergency diesel generators should start within ten seconds.
Seven seconds later, I heard them turn over.
The engines coughed into life somewhere below, their rumble travelling through the concrete floor. Emergency lighting filled the control room in hard white pools, throwing everything into stark relief. The monitoring systems began their restart sequence, screens flickering as they came back online.
But there was something wrong with the readings.

On that part of the circuit, the indicated normal value was roughly 28 degrees C, and automatic safeguards should already have been responding.
I reached for the emergency operating instructions, then stopped. After twelve years, my hands knew the opening actions better than my conscious mind did.
A primary coolant temperature excursion could indicate a system breach. Confirm the reading. Initiate the appropriate isolation sequence. Notify the shift supervisor. Prepare for a controlled shutdown if the safety threshold was exceeded.
But something deeper than training told me to wait.
This was not a normal equipment failure. The timing was too exact. Calder Loch had begun glowing minutes before site power failed, and now the primary-loop readings were rising the moment the emergency diesels engaged. It was as though whatever was beneath the ice had connected itself to the station.
I had never placed much faith in intuition. I had always assumed it was only pattern recognition that the conscious mind had not yet caught up with. But standing in that emergency-lit control room, watching impossible figures climb on displays that should not have been affected by anything happening on a frozen loch 180 metres away, I felt something in my gut screaming that the situation had already passed beyond every procedure ever written.
Through the reinforced windows, the glow intensified.
What had begun as faint phosphorescence was now bright enough to cast shadows across the snow-covered shore. It was no longer random. The light was arranging itself into patterns, geometric shapes that formed, dissolved and reappeared in different configurations.
Spirals began as pinpoints and expanded until they reached the edges of the frozen expanse, then collapsed into concentrated knots of brilliance.
I pressed my face close to the glass, trying to understand what I was seeing. The patterns were not chaotic. They followed a kind of logic, each spiral building upon the previous one, each pulse stronger than the last.
It was like a language I could not read but somehow recognised.

My training said to commence an emergency shutdown. My gut said to wait and watch, because whatever was happening out there was about to show me how deep the problem went.
And I was no longer certain that our procedures would be enough for what lay at the bottom.

Moira's voice had the edge it took on whenever something refused to add up. In twelve years I had learnt to read every inflection in her tone. This one meant trouble.
I checked the secondary displays and cross-referenced them with the radiation-monitoring panel.
"Yes. I'm seeing it. What the hell is happening to the radiation readings?"
"That's the point."
Static burst through her transmission.
"They aren't rising. They're falling. Fast."
My hand stopped halfway to the console.
Falling radiation measurements during a potential reactor incident were like water running uphill. It did not happen. It could not happen. The laws of physics did not take tea breaks.
"How large a fall?" I asked, though part of me did not want the answer.
"Thirty per cent below normal monitored levels, and still falling. It's as if..."
She paused, and I heard her breathing over the radio.
Moira never paused while reading data.
"It's as if something is actively absorbing the energy produced by the reactor."
The control room seemed to turn colder.
I stared at the displays. Figures that should have remained stable, or risen during the fault condition, showed a steady decline towards impossible territory.
Radiation did not simply disappear. Radioactive material decayed over time, certainly, but the relevant timescales were not measured in minutes.
"Moira, run the check again. There must be something wrong with your equipment."
"Already done. Three times. Callum, I'm coming to the control room now. I'm in the turbine-hall link corridor, about 180 metres away. Allow eight minutes."
Her voice had the certainty that made argument pointless.
"We also need the site emergency control centre staffed, the off-site emergency arrangements activated and the Office for Nuclear Regulation notified. Whatever is happening here, it is beyond anything in our manuals."
The ONR.
Christ.
The last time we had called in the regulator had been after a false alarm during a training exercise two years earlier. An ONR inspector called Julian Hargreaves had spent three days going through our procedures line by line, treating us as though we could not tell a control rod from a cooling pipe.
The memory left a sour taste in my mouth.
"Received," I said into the radio. "I'll bring up the emergency notification procedure."
The channel fell quiet except for a soft hiss of static.
I lowered the handset and turned back to the bank of monitors showing Calder Loch. The glow remained, geometric patterns moving beneath the ice like a frozen aurora. But now I was not merely watching them.
I was studying them.
My eyes followed the luminous lines as they shifted and pulsed. Slowly, a structure emerged from what had appeared to be chaos.
The brightest points were not scattered at random. They were converging, moving purposefully towards one location.
The cooling-water intake.
My stomach tightened.
The vast concrete conduits drawing water from Calder Loch lay beneath the surface, roughly 180 metres from shore. From the control room I could see the intake zone where the warmer water had left the ice fractured and thin, with patches of black water showing between broken plates.
The geometric patterns were not dancing. They were flowing towards those intake structures like iron filings drawn to a magnet.
I snatched up the radio.
"Moira, the glow beneath the loch is moving towards the cooling-water intake."
Static answered, then her voice returned.
"How quickly?"
A fair question. I leant towards feed eight and tried to judge the movement. The luminescence did not flow like ordinary liquid. It moved more like mercury, thick and purposeful, following channels beneath the ice that I could not see but which somehow existed.
Threads of light converged from every direction upon the point where water entered the station's cooling systems.
"Hard to say. About walking pace, perhaps, but it is definitely heading for the intake."
"Jesus."
Her voice crackled through the speaker.
"I'm eight minutes away. Do not touch anything until I get there."
"Received."
I put the radio down and checked the digital clock above the main console.

The figures glowed red against the dark casing, steady and dependable in a way that nothing else seemed to be any more.
In thirteen minutes I had gone from monitoring routine overnight operations to watching something that defied every physical principle I understood.
And it was getting worse.
The luminescence was not merely moving now. It was accelerating. What had been a slow drift became urgent and deliberate, as if whatever produced the glow had discovered where it wished to go and no longer saw a need for subtlety.
I watched the patterns stream beneath the ice along routes I could not make out. The light had the weight and thickness of liquid metal. It carried a purpose I could not understand but could feel in my bones.
Every instinct I had developed around radioactive material warned me of danger my rational mind could not process.
This was no strange atmospheric effect.
Something was coming for us.
The realisation struck like a blow to the stomach. Whatever was causing the radiation readings to fall, whatever was absorbing the reactor's energy, was not content to remain beneath Calder Loch.
It was moving towards the cooling system and the heart of the station.
My hands began to sweat inside my work gloves.
In twelve years of night shifts I had dealt with equipment failures, false alarms and one genuine emergency when a pump seized during a summer heatwave. I had never faced anything that appeared to possess intent.
The geometric forms continued their hypnotic movement beneath the ice, beautiful and dreadful at once. Bright strands wove themselves into designs so intricate that looking directly at them hurt, like staring into a kaleidoscope built for senses human beings did not possess.
Beneath the mesmerising display lay one certainty that made my skin crawl.
It was coming for the reactor.
Whatever it was, wherever it had come from, it had found Calder Loch Nuclear Generating Station and decided we were precisely what it wanted.
I kept my eyes on those flowing patterns and counted the minutes until Moira should arrive, trying not to imagine what would happen when the luminescence reached the intake.
"Seeing something in the turbine-hall link corridor between..."
The radio dissolved into static.
Not the familiar interference we sometimes heard in bad weather, nor the crackle of an electrical fault. This was dead static, the kind that made your skin tighten because the transmission had not merely weakened.
It had stopped.
I stared at the radio above the console, waiting for Moira's voice to return. She had been in the turbine-hall link corridor, approximately 180 metres away and eight minutes from the control room. The covered passage had emergency lighting at intervals of about 6 metres.
Nothing there should have interrupted her signal.
"Moira," I said, keying the microphone. "Come back."
Static.
My fingers found the emergency-channel selector. Procedure required me to contact the site emergency control centre if communication with field personnel was lost during an incident.
I changed channel and pressed transmit.
"Control room to site emergency control centre. We have lost communication with the shift supervisor in the turbine-hall link corridor. Please respond."
More static.
There was not even the low background hiss of a normal open channel, only a dead, empty sound that lifted the hairs on my arms.
I tried the internal landline next. The telephone sat on my desk, a black plastic receiver that looked as though it had been installed when Calder Loch was commissioned in 1980.
I lifted it and heard a dialling tone.
That was something.
I entered the extension for the site emergency control centre and listened to it ring.
And ring.
And ring.
I counted twelve rings before hanging up.
Nobody allowed that telephone to ring twelve times. Not during ordinary operations and certainly not during an incident. The emergency control centre was meant to be staffed or immediately available at all hours.
My mobile phone was charging on the window ledge behind my chair. I snatched it up and checked the screen.
No signal.
Not even enough to send a text. Where the network name should have appeared, the display showed only "No service".
That was when the cold truly settled in my stomach.
Losing the radio was one thing. An unanswered internal landline was another. But the disappearance of the mobile network required something larger than a faulty cooling pump. Masts did not simply cease operating because a station circuit had tripped.
I was reaching for the radio again when the control board lit up like a Christmas tree.
Warning lamps I had never seen before appeared across the main panel. Red, amber and blue indicators flickered on where equipment of that age should not have had indicators at all.

Water could not reach that temperature in an operating loop without freezing solid, and ice formation on that scale would have ruptured the pipes.

Physics did not work that way. Water did not run uphill through a disconnected route whilst a closed circuit sustained an impossible vacuum.
But it was the radiation monitor that made my hands begin to shake.
The digital display scrolled through isotope signatures I had never seen in twelve years at the station. Our fuel contained uranium-235 and uranium-238, standard reactor material whose signatures I could recognise half asleep.
These readings suggested atomic masses that matched nothing on the periodic table.
Elements that could not exist.
I pulled up the system diagnostics on my terminal and ran every test available from the control room.
Water-flow rates. Primary and secondary circuits. Electrical distribution. Emergency diesels. Protection systems.
The computer processed each request and returned results that contradicted everything I understood about the station.
According to the diagnostics, water was flowing through pipes shown as isolated on the schematic. Electrical current passed through circuits that had been isolated for maintenance on 24 January 2026.
The emergency diesel generators still showed active and loaded, consistent with the rumble beneath the floor, but their output displays now reported power moving through open breakers and disconnected cabling. Then the vibration faltered. One engine note dropped away, followed by another, although every display continued to insist that both machines were running normally.
"Moira, please respond."
I tried the radio again, hearing desperation enter my voice.
"I need you to check in."
Nothing.
I went through every frequency we used: emergency channels, maintenance, security and the local interoperability channel. Every one returned static. There was not even the distant background traffic we might ordinarily receive from Police Scotland local response or roads-policing units working the A9.

Every gauge and monitor showed impossible data. Temperature, pressure, radiation and electrical load had all detached themselves from reason.
But the equipment did not seem to be malfunctioning.
These were not random figures or error codes. The readings were precise and patterned, as though something were genuinely producing them.
Something was making water pass backwards through isolated pipework. Something was generating signatures from isotopes that should not exist. Something was imposing negative pressure on a sealed system.
I called Moira's name into the radio again.
And again.
My voice came back from the concrete walls of the control room. The only other sounds were the ventilation system's steady hum and the quiet electronic beeping of the instruments.
The silence lengthened like a living thing.
It was not merely the absence of Moira's voice. It was the complete absence of human contact. No station radio traffic. No emergency broadcast from the authorities. No mobile signal to reach my sister or Darren, my friend on the day shift.
I sat alone in a control room filled with impossible data, watching numbers cross screens in defiance of every law of physics I had learnt.
The instruments told me that something ancient and powerful was passing through the frozen infrastructure of Calder Loch station, something able to bend reality around itself.
But what frightened me more than any of that was the silence where Moira's voice should have been.
She had been in the corridor for twenty-three minutes now. Long past the eight minutes she had said it would take her to reach me.
I had not heard a footstep on the metal walkway outside. No radio check. No update. None of the restrained conversation she sometimes used to fill the dead air between observations.
Only silence.
And within that silence, I felt something watching me through the CCTV feeds. Something that had waited in the cold depths of Calder Loch for longer than human beings had existed.
Something ready at last to make itself known.

The luminescence poured towards the massive conduits with purpose. It moved neither like water nor steam, but like something alive that understood exactly where it was going.

It should not have been possible. Those structures were steel and reinforced concrete, built to withstand tremendous flows and pressures. Nothing should have illuminated them from inside.
Yet the radiance spread through the cooling route like luminous blood through arteries.
Feed four showed the accessible secondary-loop pipework and its sensor overlay. Feed five provided maintenance-camera views from the cooling galleries, combined with diagnostic schematics for the concealed sections. Between the cameras and overlays, I could follow the thing through each junction, valve and connection point.
Lines I had previously known only from drawings and maintenance inspections came alive as blue-green veins.
The secondary circuit began to shine on feed four. Moments later, feed five's sensor overlay showed the same effect moving into further heat-transfer systems.
Whatever this thing was, it understood our cooling network better than most of the engineers who had designed it.
My hands found the radio controls without thought. I had to tell Moira what I was seeing. I needed another human being to witness it.
Then the electrical output display caught my attention.
The figure was falling quickly.
I had been so intent on the glow that I had missed the change. Calder Loch's single unit had been producing 650 megawatts. The display now showed 630, then 605, then 580.
It fell steadily, as though someone were turning down a dimmer switch.
But that was not how a nuclear reactor behaved. Operators did not casually dial down hundreds of megawatts as if adjusting a room thermostat. Control rods moved in measured increments under strict procedures. Changes of this scale demanded clear physical causes and triggered layers of protection.
I opened the control-rod position display.
Every indicator was green. Normal insertion depth. Normal spacing. Precisely where the rods should be for full-power operation.
The neutron-flux readings remained normal as well. The core temperature held steady. The primary loop still showed its own impossible behaviour, distinct from the secondary loop, but there was no legitimate reason for the electrical output to be falling like a stone.
Then the answer struck me, and I had to grip the edge of the console to stop my knees giving way.
The entity was not merely interfering with the reactor.
It was feeding on it.
All that luminescence passing through the cooling systems, all that impossible radiance, was drawing energy from the nuclear reaction itself.
It was not ordinary electrical power it wanted. The emergency diesels were no substitute. Whatever lived beneath Calder Loch was reaching through the coolant and heat-transfer systems towards the energy released in the core.
It was not disrupting the reaction or damaging the fuel.
It was drinking from it.
A parasite that had found the perfect host.
I knew the signatures of equipment failure. Pumps seized. Pipes ruptured. Control systems failed or generated incoherent alarms.
This was not failure.
Something was deliberately and methodically draining energy from the reactor without triggering any conventional protection response.

We had already lost normal site power. The emergency diesels had started, but their indications were now impossible and at least one engine had audibly fallen silent. If the station lost dependable power to its pumps and safety systems, cooling would become progressively more difficult. The backup arrangements were designed to sustain essential functions, not to survive a thing that rewrote the behaviour of the circuits themselves.
If it continued feeding and our cooling capability collapsed, the fuel could overheat. The core might be damaged. Containment systems could be challenged.
But the thought that truly shook me was what might happen if the entity stopped.
All the energy it consumed had to go somewhere. That was basic physics, or had been until that night. Energy did not simply vanish. If the thing beneath the loch released everything it had absorbed in one instant, what would happen?
I thought of Chernobyl.
I thought of the shattered reactor building, radioactive material carried across Europe and evacuation zones left empty for decades. Calder Loch was a different design, with modernised safeguards and containment, and I knew enough to understand that the comparison was technically poor.
But fear does not make tidy engineering judgements.
In that moment I imagined a catastrophic discharge of stored energy, the station destroyed and a regional evacuation spreading across the Highlands. I pictured roads closed from the loch to the A9, scattered settlements emptied and the land abandoned for generations.
It was frightened speculation, not a calculation. I knew that.
It felt real all the same.

If the entity kept feeding and the safety systems failed around it, we might lose cooling and face a drawn-out nuclear emergency with hundreds of millions of pounds in damage and decommissioning liabilities, even before the human cost was counted.
If it stopped feeding and released what it had taken, there might be no time for evacuation. No time for anything but a flash and silence.
I stared at the monitors as that luminous presence spread through our systems like an infection in a bloodstream and tried to understand the choice in front of me.

The glow began to seep from the ventilation grilles above the main console. At first it came in wisps, like smoke drifting from a cigarette somewhere inside the ductwork.
Except the vapour shone with the same pale blue-green light I had watched beneath the ice.
It pooled in the corners where the walls met the ceiling and gathered behind the equipment racks, a luminous mist moving with purpose.
It did not merely drift.
It flowed as though it knew precisely where it intended to go.
My hands remained on the control panel, running diagnostics that told me nothing useful, but I could not stop watching the light fill the room.
Then the warmth reached me.
It began in my fingertips, a gentle heat spreading through my palms and into my wrists. It was not like touching a hot surface. It was more like sinking into a warm bath after too long outside in the cold.
My muscles relaxed without permission. The tension in my shoulders melted away.
For the first time since the anomaly began, I felt calm.
That should have been my first warning.
Nothing about the situation justified calm. The instruments showed impossible readings, Moira had vanished from the radio, the station was isolated and a luminous vapour was entering the control room through the ventilation system.
I should have been reaching for respiratory protection and emergency procedures. I should have been trying every remaining means of summoning help.
Instead, I stood and watched the patterns circle me.
They were beautiful.
The thought came unbidden, and I did not reject it because it was true.
The light moved in spirals and eddies that resembled water but were more intricate, more deliberate. It was like watching a dancer who knew every step by heart, performing a routine practised for centuries.
My breathing slowed.
Deep, even breaths drew the warm, glowing mist into my lungs. Each inhalation brought more comfort, a growing certainty that everything was exactly as it ought to be.
The fear had to be there. I was not stupid.
But it seemed distant now, muffled, like a nightmare recalled after hours awake.
"Callum."
The voice came from everywhere and nowhere.
It might have come through the radio. It might have been the entity speaking inside my head.
It sounded like Moira, but softer somehow, gentler than she had ever sounded during an ordinary shift.
"Just wait."
The voice surrounded me.
"Let it finish."
That made sense.
Whatever was happening, resisting it would only make matters worse. Better to remain calm. Better to watch, learn and understand what it was trying to show me.
The patterns became more complex. Fractals nested within fractals. Geometric forms hurt when I tried to look directly at them, yet felt familiar, as though I had seen them in dreams I could no longer remember.
"Join us," the voice whispered. "Join the light."
My legs felt heavy. Not tired, only peaceful, as though I had stood for too long and it was time to sit.
Time to rest.
Time to stop worrying about gauges, procedures and all the small, meaningless things that filled a person's days.
The warmth had spread through my entire body. My fingers and toes tingled. My chest was full of glowing mist, and each breath felt like the first mild air of spring after a long Highland winter.
I could feel my will slipping away.
Not violently. It did not feel as though anything were tearing it from me.
It felt like releasing a rope I had gripped too tightly for too long, opening my hands and trusting that everything would be all right.
The light was inside me now.
It flowed behind my eyes, through my blood and into my bones as though it belonged there. As though it had always been part of me, waiting for the right moment to wake.
Some small and distant part of my mind still remembered why I was there. It tried to speak. It tried to remind me about operating procedures, safety systems and the simple fact that a nuclear generating station was not supposed to glow with luminous veins.
But that voice was growing quieter, harder to hear over the gentle hum of the light as it filled every corner of the control room. Every corner of me.
I was reaching for something.
My hand moved without conscious thought, fingers stretching towards a switch I had never used in 12 years of working nights at Calder Loch. The emergency boron control was a large red switch behind a clear plastic cover, mounted on the wall beside the main console.
It was the sort of thing they made you memorise in training and told you to pray you would never need. Operating it would trigger the emergency injection of concentrated borated solution into the reactor coolant, flooding the core with neutron-absorbing boron intended to halt criticality. It was a severe last-resort shutdown measure, one that could leave the unit out of service for months and might end its working life altogether.
Hundreds of millions of pounds in damage and decommissioning liabilities. Costs that could finish the company. And my career? Gone.
Who would hire the man who poisoned a functioning reactor because he thought he had seen lights beneath a loch?
But with that warm glow pulsing through my veins, I understood something. The entity, whatever it was, did not feed on ordinary electricity. It fed on the nuclear reaction itself. It needed the controlled fission in the core to sustain itself, to grow, to spread beyond the boundaries of this ageing station beside a frozen Highland loch.
Without the reactor, it would have nothing left to consume.
My fingers found the plastic cover and flipped it open. The sharp crack cut through the gentle hum of the light.
The voice in my head, Moira Campbell's voice, or the thing wearing her voice, suddenly lost its gentleness.
"Wait," it said, urgent now.
"Don't."
I pulled the switch.
The emergency injection actuated, and the reactor died instantly.
Not the rapid but controlled shutdown we had trained for. Not the expected collapse in power followed by decay heat, cooling pumps running and steam bleeding away in measured stages. The whole thing simply stopped, as if someone had pulled a plug from a wall.
I watched it happen across every monitor at once.
Core temperature flatlined. Primary-loop pressure dropped towards zero. The secondary-loop readings froze and then vanished. Turbine rotation indicators went dark. Radiation monitors fell to background. The electrical output display plunged from 650 megawatts to zero without passing through any value in between.
That was impossible. Boron could halt the chain reaction, but it could not erase heat, pressure and radiation in three heartbeats. Yet forty-six years after Calder Loch's commissioning in 1980, the station's working life ended in exactly that way.
The strangest part was watching the glow respond as if it understood what I had done.
On CCTV feed 3, the intake maintenance camera, the luminescence flowing through the visible pipework began to flicker. It was no longer the steady pulse I had tracked through the night. It had become frantic. Desperate, perhaps, as though it were trying to hold on to something already slipping from its grasp.
The light dimmed first in the sensor overlays closest to the reactor systems. That made a kind of sense. The energy it wanted had been strongest there.
But instead of fading away, the glow began to move.
It flowed backwards through the cooling circuits, gathering itself like mercury rolling uphill. I leant towards the console and watched the schematic diagnostics as it withdrew from the primary loop, then crossed back through the heat-exchange boundary and retreated along the secondary loop. On the maintenance feeds, the visible light pulled away through every accessible pipe and conduit it had touched.
It was no longer drifting. It was fleeing with purpose.
Normal site power had already failed and the emergency diesels had started, but now even their displays became meaningless. Emergency lighting washed the control room in a sickly red glow. I scarcely noticed. My eyes were fixed on CCTV feed 7, the established overview of Calder Loch and the warmed intake zone.
The luminescence poured back through the intake pipework and spread beneath the ice in the same flowing patterns I had watched all night, only now they ran in reverse. Across most of the loch the ice remained thick and white with snow, while above the warmed intakes it was thinner, fractured and broken by patches of dark water. The light gathered into streams, then narrow luminous veins, then concentrated beams that passed through the frozen surface as though the ice were no stronger than wet paper.
Then it was gone.
One moment the loch had shone like stained glass lit from beneath. The next there was only dark water around the intakes, a snow-covered shore and the faint lights of scattered Highland settlements beyond the loch. Across the bay, the red obstruction lamp on the station radio mast blinked steadily in the darkness.
I sat beneath the emergency lights, listening to the silence where forty-six years of machinery had hummed, and tried to understand what I had witnessed.
The thing had retreated into the depths of Calder Loch. Back to wherever it had waited through all those years and decades, patient and ageless beneath the frozen water. Waiting for someone to place another source of energy powerful enough to draw it towards the surface.
That was what I told the emergency responders when they found me at dawn. Or tried to tell them.
The first Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliance arrived at about 06:30 on 14 February 2026, just as the sky was turning the pale grey that meant morning was coming whether anyone was ready for it or not. By then I had been alone in the control room for roughly two and a half hours, going through every procedure I knew and trying to restore systems that would not respond to any input.
The reactor was dead. Not merely shut down. Dead. It was as though something had reached into the core and removed the physical principles that made atoms split, water heat and turbines turn.
The first person through the control-room door was Euan Fraser, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service station commander of about my age. He was stocky, dressed in breathing apparatus and a high-visibility incident tabard, with a clipboard in one gloved hand and the wary expression of someone deciding whether I was part of the problem or part of the solution.
"Callum Reid?"
"Yes. I'm the one who raised the alarm."
"What happened here?"
That was when I discovered how hard it is to explain something you do not understand yourself.
I told him about the secondary-loop temperature fluctuations, about the glow beneath Calder Loch and about watching the light move through the cooling circuits as though it were alive. I tried to describe how the reactor had stopped all at once, without the residual heat, pressure response or radiation behaviour we had been trained to expect.
Fraser wrote it down, nodding when he needed to and asking the practical questions emergency responders ask. Had there been a fire? A release? An explosion? Was anyone missing?
The six other members of the night crew were soon accounted for. Emergency teams found them in remote station areas, safe but confused and unable to explain why they had ignored calls and alarms. They were evacuated through the site emergency control centre and checked by the Scottish Ambulance Service. None remembered seeing the light.
I could still see the polite doubt in Fraser's eyes, the guarded look people use when they think someone may be in shock or having a breakdown.
"It may be an equipment failure," he said at last, closing the clipboard. "Older stations can produce complicated fault sequences. The site team, Police Scotland and the nuclear inspectors will establish what happened."
The station's off-site emergency arrangements had been activated, and the Office for Nuclear Regulation was notified. Its lead inspector arrived three days later, on 17 February 2026.
His name was Julian Hargreaves. I recognised him at once. He was the same ONR inspector who had handled an earlier false alarm at Calder Loch, years before, and he carried himself with the same dry patience I remembered.
He was in his mid-fifties, soft around the middle, wearing a suit that looked as tired as he did. He had a bureaucrat's habit of asking questions as though he already knew the answer and merely wanted to see whether yours matched.
Hargreaves spent a fortnight at the station. He examined every system, procedure and maintenance record from the previous five years, with particular attention to the affected circuits, which had been isolated for maintenance on 24 January 2026. He reviewed the emergency diesel records, the contradictory instrument logs and the CCTV archive, most of which had degraded into interference at the moments that mattered.
He interviewed everyone who had been on duty that night, including the six disoriented crew members. The two people he most needed to question were me and Moira.
But they could not interview Moira.
Emergency responders found her in the turbine-hall link corridor, the same corridor from which she had made her final transmission. She had been about 180 metres from the control room, an eight-minute walk under normal conditions. They located her roughly an hour after the first appliance arrived.
She was alive. She was breathing, and her pulse was steady. But she was completely unresponsive, as though someone had simply switched her off.
Her eyes were the worst part.
They remained open, staring straight ahead, and in certain light they reflected something that had no visible source. If you stood at the right angle, you could see a faint blue-green luminescence deep inside her pupils. It was not the flash of a camera or the reflection cast by headlights. It seemed to come from somewhere behind her eyes, somewhere inside her skull.
The doctors could not explain it. They ran every test they could think of: CT scans, MRI scans, blood tests and neurological examinations.
Everything came back normal. Her brain activity, reflexes and physical responses all fell within expected ranges. But she never spoke again. She never acknowledged that another person was in the room.
Six months after the incident, they transferred her to a specialist neurological care centre outside Perth. It was a place for patients with profound disorders of consciousness, people whose bodies remained alive while the person they had been could no longer be reached.
I visited her several times before I left the area.
I sat beside her bed and talked about ordinary things: the weather, the latest Inverness Caledonian Thistle result, whether she remembered the time we had repaired a workshop extraction fan with a salvaged bearing from an old agricultural machine. She had laughed for days about that repair, claiming the fan would start asking for red diesel next.
In the care centre, she gave me nothing.
Only the same empty stare and the faint light in her eyes, which the nurses pretended not to notice.
Hargreaves' official report was issued on 11 April 2026. It ran to twenty-seven pages of technical analysis and cautious regulatory language, all building towards the conclusion that a complex equipment failure had occurred during an abnormal loss of power. The report cited age-related degradation, inconsistent signals from cooling-system instrumentation and possible perceptual disturbance caused by fatigue, acute stress and exposure to unusual electromagnetic conditions.
It stopped short of claiming that any single fault explained everything. Instead, it said the available evidence was insufficient to establish a complete causal sequence.
My testimony received three paragraphs. Three paragraphs to cover what I had seen, what I had felt and what had truly happened inside Calder Loch that night. Even those made it sound as though I had imagined the whole thing.
"The witness reported unusual visual phenomena consistent with acute stress and confusion. No recoverable physical or recorded evidence substantiates the reported anomalous luminescence or apparently non-physical system behaviour."
No recoverable evidence.
The reactor that had gone from full output to absolute stillness in three heartbeats apparently did not count.
I resigned three months after the incident. If I am honest, I had little choice. Word travels in the nuclear industry. The man who claimed he saw living lights and heard his supervisor's voice inside his head was not the man anyone wanted watching a reactor core.
It did not matter that I had 12 years of clean service behind me. It did not matter how many alarms and difficult nights I had handled without losing my head. Tell the truth once about something no one is willing to believe, and suddenly you are the person who cannot be trusted with responsibility.
I found work at a chemical processing works near Invergordon. Nothing grand. I monitor systems, check trends and file reports. Different machinery, same basic principles.
Keep everything running smoothly. Watch for trouble. Follow the procedure when something goes wrong.
Quiet work. Predictable work.
But some nights, driving home along the A9, I take a loch-side diversion on an unclassified Highland road that brings me past Calder Loch. There is no practical reason for it. Curiosity, perhaps. Habit.
Years have passed, and the generating station has never returned to service. Officially, the reactor suffered irreparable damage during an unprecedented equipment failure. Its silent structures remain beside the water, carrying hundreds of millions of pounds in decommissioning liabilities.
Sometimes, when the conditions are right, with a clear sky, no moon and ice thick across most of the loch, I glimpse something moving far below the surface.
Nothing dramatic. Nothing a camera would capture clearly enough to convince a sceptic.
Only a faint blue-green glow, perhaps 15 metres down, drifting through the black water like the memory of light.
Patient. Eternal. Waiting.
Waiting for someone else to build something powerful enough to draw it back towards the surface. Waiting for the next source of concentrated energy, the next chance to rise from the depths and touch the world above.
I know what I saw on 14 February 2026. I know what happened to Moira. I know what happened to the reactor, and what still lies beneath the ice.
No one believes me. But the truth does not stop being true because people refuse to hear it.
And on those nights when I pass Calder Loch and see that faint luminescence moving through the deep water, I remember how it felt to have something vast and ancient speaking inside my head in Moira Campbell's voice.
I remember.
And I know it is still there, waiting beneath Calder Loch for another source powerful enough to feed it.
