The Museum Beneath the Trench
I drowned when I was six years old. I did not die, not exactly, but I came close enough for my lungs to burn, my vision to break into spots and the edges of everything to soften and turn grey. The hotel pool in Puerto de la Cruz stretched wide and blue beneath the Tenerife sun, much larger and deeper than the pool at our council leisure centre back in Plymouth.
I drowned when I was six years old. I did not die, not exactly, but I came close enough for my lungs to burn, my vision to break into spots and the edges of everything to soften and turn grey.
The hotel pool in Puerto de la Cruz stretched wide and blue beneath the Tenerife sun, much larger and deeper than the pool at our council leisure centre back in Plymouth. I had wanted to swim in it from the moment we arrived two days earlier.
Mum kept saying, "Wait for your father. Wait until we're all together."
But the water looked impossibly clear through the sliding glass door of our room. While she was unpacking, I slipped outside.
The shallow end was as warm as bathwater, and I paddled about happily for perhaps five minutes. Then I noticed a bright blue diving ring lying on the floor of the deep end. I decided I could fetch it. I filled my small chest with the biggest breath it could hold and kicked down hard.
Halfway to the ring, I realised I had made a mistake.
My lungs began screaming before I reached the bottom. I tried to turn and push upwards, but my arms had become heavy and uncoordinated. Panic came quickly. Six-year-olds have little practice remaining calm when they cannot breathe.
I thrashed. My mouth opened without my meaning it to, and suddenly I was choking on chlorinated water. It burnt worse than anything I had ever felt.
That was when it happened.
One second I was drowning, my sight collapsing into blackness and my chest convulsing. The next, I was floating near the ceiling of the pool enclosure, looking down at a small, dark-haired boy sinking towards the bottom.
Looking down at myself.
The panic should have grown worse. Instead, everything became quiet and remote, as though wrapped in cotton wool. From above I could see the whole pool. I saw the lifeguard's chair and the man in a red polo shirt and navy shorts who sprang upright beside it. I saw him point. I saw a woman in the same uniform sprint towards the water.
They moved quickly, but to me everything seemed slow, elongated and strange.
The man, whose name I later learnt was Callum Price, dived cleanly and surfaced with my body in his arms. Not me. My body. I was still near the ceiling, watching him drag that limp child towards the side.
The woman, Nadia Clarke, helped lift my physical form onto the poolside and rolled it over. My body coughed. A great deal of water came out. I watched as Callum checked whether I was breathing and Nadia shouted for someone to fetch the hotel nurse and ring the emergency services.
Mum's scream cut through the enclosure when she came running from the hotel, with Dad just behind her. Helen Mercer dropped to her knees beside my body, touched my face and said my name over and over.
"Daniel. Dan. Please, Daniel."
I tried to tell her I was all right. I was there, floating by the rafters. But I no longer had a mouth. I had no hands, lungs or anything solid. I was only awareness, a watching presence that could neither touch nor speak nor do anything except observe.
Then my body gasped - a real breath this time - and everything snapped together so violently that it hurt.
Suddenly I was choking again, now on the poolside rather than beneath the water. My ribs ached. My throat felt scraped raw. Callum's tanned, worried face hovered over mine as he told me to breathe slowly and take it easy. Nadia knelt beside him, urging me to stay calm.
Mum was crying and holding my hand. The hotel nurse arrived almost at once, gave me oxygen and kept me still until the local paramedics took me to hospital. There, during several hours of observation for complications from inhaling water, Dr Catriona Bell examined me. She had auburn hair, wire-rimmed glasses and a calm manner. She checked my pupils, listened repeatedly to my lungs and asked what I remembered.
I told her about floating near the ceiling.
She smiled. It was not an unkind smile, merely a dismissive one.
"That is called a hypoxic hallucination," she said, making notes on a clipboard. "Your brain was not receiving enough oxygen. It can do strange things in that state and create extremely vivid false memories."
"It wasn't false," I said.
My voice came out hoarse from coughing. I told her I had seen Callum dive in and Nadia running. I had watched it all from above.
"Your peripheral vision probably caught some of those details before you lost consciousness," Dr Bell said. "Your brain then reconstructed them into a coherent narrative. It is a well-documented response following severe oxygen deprivation and near-drowning."
Mum squeezed my hand more tightly. Dad stood behind her with his arms folded, his face pale and rigid.
Dr Bell continued talking about oxygen deprivation, temporal-lobe activity and confabulation. All those large medical words amounted to the same thing: you imagined it, child. Your brain played a trick on you.
But I knew better. I could not have explained how. I simply knew, in the same way that, on waking, you know the difference between a dream and ordinary life even when the dream felt real.
That separation, that floating awareness, had not been my brain misfiring. It was real. Different from ordinary reality, perhaps, but not false.
We flew home to Plymouth three days later. Mum watched me throughout the journey and barely allowed me to go to the lavatory alone. Dad kept asking whether I felt all right and whether I needed anything. They had been frightened - truly frightened - and I understood that even at six.
What I did not understand was the pull I felt towards water afterwards.
Our house had a modest heated pool in the back garden, an unusual feature for a Devon home but hardly luxurious. It was approximately 5 by 9 metres, rectangular with rounded corners, and deepened from 1.2 metres to 2.4 metres. I had swum in it hundreds of times before the Tenerife holiday.
Now it looked different. It felt charged with possibility.
I waited a week before trying anything. I allowed Mum and Dad time to relax and stop watching me quite so closely.
Then, one afternoon when they were both outside reading and I was supposedly playing in the shallow end, I swam into the deep water. I drew a huge breath and went under. I did not try to reach the bottom. I simply hung in the water with my eyes closed, feeling my lungs begin to burn as the oxygen ran out.
Panic tried to return, but I pushed through it. I held on and let the burning worsen.
Come on, I thought. Happen again.
My vision began to grey at the edges. The greyness spread inwards, narrowing my sight. My chest felt ready to collapse.
Then I popped.
That is the only word I have ever found for it. I felt like a soap bubble separating from another bubble.
Suddenly I was floating about a metre above the pool, looking down at my body suspended beneath the surface. It was the same sensation as in Tenerife: the cotton-wool quiet, the distant clarity, the absence of weight.
Mum glanced up from her book. She did not see anything wrong yet. My body was still underwater, no more than a dark shape beneath the surface.
I tried to move and discovered that I could drift a little. It was not like swimming. I merely thought about a direction and slid towards it, slowly and smoothly. I floated towards the shallow end whilst keeping my physical form in sight.
Dad turned a page of his magazine. My body's lungs must have been screaming by then, but from above I could feel none of it. I could feel nothing physical at all. I was only bodiless awareness.
Then my body's survival instincts took over. I watched it jerk, thrash and kick for the surface. The instant its head broke through and dragged in air, I snapped back inside.
The burning struck at once. My lungs heaved, my throat felt raw and my heart hammered. I clung to the edge of the pool, coughing and shaking.
"Dan."
Mum was already on her feet.
"Are you all right?"
"Fine," I managed. "I just held my breath too long."
Her face tightened with worry, but I smiled and climbed out before she could ask more questions.
That night, lying in bed, I reviewed every detail. The separation had felt identical on both occasions. There had been the same floating sensation, the same muffled quality to the world and the same inability to touch or speak. In Tenerife I had been panicking and drowning without control. That afternoon I had done it deliberately.
I had triggered it by forcing my body towards the same oxygen-starved threshold. I could do it again whenever I wanted.
The thought should have terrified me. Perhaps it did, a little. Mostly, however, I felt an intense curiosity and a need to understand what was happening.
Dr Bell's explanation did not fit. Hypoxic hallucinations should not have been so consistent or so real. They should not have allowed me to see things from angles my physical eyes could never have reached.
Over the next few months, I practised whenever I could. I always kept Mum or Dad nearby and always made it look casual. I would swim and play, then occasionally remain underwater longer than I should, pushing myself until the separation occurred.
I became better at triggering it. I learnt the precise threshold at which my consciousness slipped loose. I called these events projections, and they followed consistent rules.
At first I could move only a few metres from my body. Solid objects stopped me completely. I could not touch anything, make a sound or interact with the physical world. When I looked down, my hands appeared faint and translucent. Sound became hollow and distorted, as though I were listening through water even while floating in air.
Mum's voice reached me warped and distant. The filter pump's hum stretched into a deep resonance unlike its usual mechanical buzz.
But I could see perfectly - better than perfectly. Colours seemed sharper and more vivid. I could make out individual leaves on the wind-bent apple tree beside the pool, the grain in the paving slabs and the tiny movements of insects in the grass.
As the months passed, Mum grew more worried. She watched me practise holding my breath with an expression that combined fear and helplessness. Dad tried to be reasonable and explain how dangerous it was, but anxiety always sharpened his voice.
I continued anyway. I could not stop. The projections felt too important to ignore, as though I had stumbled upon something impossible that I was obliged to understand.
Each time I separated and floated above my submerged body, I proved Dr Bell wrong. Consciousness could exist beyond flesh, bone and oxygen-starved neurons. I had touched something real in that Tenerife pool, something without a medical explanation.
My fascination with the ocean began early. The projections were my private discovery, but the questions surrounding the deep were equally compelling. What lived below in the darkness? What happened where sunlight could not reach?
I borrowed every library book I could find about deep-sea exploration. I watched every documentary that mentioned submersibles, trenches or bioluminescent creatures. My parents assumed it was an ordinary childhood phase: dinosaurs one year, space the next, oceans after that.
They did not understand that it was not curiosity. It was need.
I was eleven when I first saw Dr Imogen Vale's documentary about Challenger Deep. It was broadcast on BBC Two on a Tuesday evening. Dad was working late at a building site, and Mum was folding washing in the sitting room. I sat cross-legged less than a metre from the television with a notebook open on my lap.
Imogen Vale appeared on screen, standing on the deck of a research vessel with the ocean stretching endlessly behind her. She began speaking about the deepest known place on Earth.
"Approximately 10,900 metres below the surface," she said, gesturing towards the water. "That is roughly seven miles down, in Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. The pressure there is around 1,100 atmospheres. An unprotected human body could not survive it. And yet life exists there - organisms we are only beginning to discover."
The programme cut to grainy footage from a deep-sea vehicle. Pale snailfish with translucent skin drifted before the camera. A jellyfish pulsed through absolute darkness, its body glowing blue-green. Amphipods moved across the sediment with unsettling speed.
I wrote everything down: depth measurements, pressure calculations and species names I could barely pronounce. What remained with me, however, was not the list of facts. It was the way Imogen spoke about the trench itself.
She called it the last frontier, the final mystery, a place humans had visited fewer times than the Moon.
"We have explored only a small fraction of Earth's oceans," she said as her face filled the screen again. "The deep sea may hold answers to questions we have not yet thought to ask. What exists down there in the darkness? What is waiting to be discovered?"
At that moment I knew. I did not hope or wonder. I knew I was going to find out.
Mum glanced over during a break in the programme.
"Pretty interesting stuff."
"Yeah."
"Are you thinking about marine biology now? Last month it was submarines."
I closed the notebook. "Just watching."
She smiled and returned to folding towels. I sat silently and considered the practical problem.
Nearly seven miles down. At eleven, my projection range was perhaps half a mile on a good day. I would have to extend it enormously. I would need to train harder, push farther and discover whether there was any upper limit to the distance consciousness could travel from the body.
The documentary became my blueprint. I watched the VHS recording I had made from BBC Two six more times that year, replaying it until the tracking went fuzzy. Imogen Vale's voice over deep-sea footage became the soundtrack to my planning. Every fact she mentioned went into my notebook. Every measurement became a target.
Approximately 10,900 metres. Challenger Deep. That was where I needed to go.
My training became systematic after that. The back-garden pool was no longer enough. I needed structure, technique and proper coaching.
I told my parents I wanted to join the competitive swimming club based at our local leisure centre. Mum looked relieved. At last, it seemed, I had found a normal adolescent interest.
"That's wonderful, sweetheart," she said, already reaching for the telephone to ask about registration. "Exercise is so important."
Dad approved as well. "It'll build discipline. Useful experience for university applications and your UCAS personal statement later on."
I let them believe whatever made them comfortable.
The club coach was useful for ordinary technique - stroke mechanics, tumble turns and race strategy - but he could not help with what I actually needed. I asked questions and conducted my own research until somebody mentioned Chief Petty Officer Gareth Bowen, a former Royal Navy clearance diver who offered private coaching to serious students. He had a reputation for pushing people beyond what they believed were their limits.
I found him at the Royal Navy training pool at HMS Raleigh near Torpoint one Saturday morning. He was tall and solidly built, with grey hair cropped short. He stood at the poolside holding a stopwatch and clipboard whilst timing a student's underwater length.
"Chief Petty Officer Bowen?"
He glanced at me. "Yes?"
"I want to hire you as a coach."
"How old are you?"
"Thirteen."
"Do your parents know you're here?"
"They know I'm looking for advanced coaching."
He studied me for a long moment, his steel-blue eyes assessing.
"What sort of advanced coaching?"
"Breath-holding. Deep diving. Extending underwater endurance beyond normal limits."
"Freediving?"
"Yes, Chief."
He turned to watch his student surface, gasping, and stopped the watch.
"Two minutes eighteen. Better. Get changed."
The student climbed out. Bowen turned his full attention back to me.
"Freediving is dangerous, particularly for children. Why do you want to learn?"
I had prepared an answer.
"I want to understand human limits. How far the body can be pushed. What's actually possible compared with what people assume is possible."
It was not quite a lie. It simply omitted the truth.
Bowen considered me.
"You swim competitively?"
"At the local leisure centre. I hold the club record for underwater distance."
"Pool stuff. Parlour tricks. Real freediving requires discipline, and most adults lack the necessary mental control, never mind the physical conditioning. Are you prepared to train six days a week, follow a strict regimen and do exactly what I tell you without argument?"
"Yes, Chief."
"And your parents approve?"
"They approve of swimming training. The details are my business."
Something shifted in his expression. It was not quite a smile.
"All right. One trial session. If you complete it, we'll discuss regular coaching. If you quit or complain, we're finished."
"Understood."
That first session nearly killed me. Bowen put me through breath-control exercises until spots crowded my vision. He made me swim underwater until my lungs screamed and taught me meditation techniques that seemed impossible to sustain whilst oxygen-deprived.
He was merciless, exacting and precisely what I needed.
I returned the next Saturday, and the Saturday after that, and the one after that.
By fourteen I had a routine that would have put most people in hospital. I meditated at 06.00 before school, concentrating on reducing my heart rate and oxygen use. In the afternoons I trained with the ordinary swimming club, maintaining the appearance of a normal teenager. Three evenings a week I worked with Bowen, pushing the physical limits of my body. At weekends I went into Plymouth Sound or the waters off Wembury, practising projections whilst my body floated in a wetsuit and testing whether salt water affected my range differently from a chlorinated pool.
The range expanded slowly and methodically. One quarter of a mile became half a mile, then three quarters of a mile.
I discovered that physical conditioning directly affected projection. Better cardiovascular endurance allowed longer separations, and longer separations somehow permitted greater distance. Bowen's breathing exercises increased my lung capacity and delayed the body's panic response.
As I grew more skilled, I no longer needed to drive myself to the edge of drowning every time. Controlled breathing, a lowered heart rate and a deeply reduced metabolic state could loosen the connection. Oxygen deprivation had opened the door, but conditioning taught me how to reach it without forcing my body quite so close to death. Duration, distance and my body's oxygen state still limited every attempt. If the physical body panicked or suffered sudden danger, I was recalled almost instantaneously along the route.
Bowen did not know what he was truly training me to do. He believed I was an obsessive boy chasing freediving records. I allowed him to believe it.
Mum worried, of course. She always worried.
"You're pushing yourself too hard, Dan. You're still a child. You should be seeing friends, going to the cinema, doing normal teenage things."
"I am doing normal things. I'm in the swimming club."
"You know what I mean."
She would touch my shoulder, her hand light and anxious.
"This obsession with holding your breath and diving deeper frightens me. Ever since Tenerife..."
"That was years ago. I'm trained now. I know what I'm doing."
She would look at me with blue eyes full of fear, love and helplessness, and I would feel the gulf widening between us as my secret grew.
Dad took another approach. He tried to reason me out of it.
"Son, there's dedication and then there's compulsion. You're spending every free hour training. Your marks are good, but you have no balance. What's driving this?"
"Excellence," I would say. "Mastery. Understanding what I'm capable of."
"But why? What's the goal?"
I could not tell him. I could not say that I intended to project my consciousness nearly seven miles down whilst my body remained at the surface. I could not explain that at six years old I had discovered consciousness could separate from the physical body, and that I meant to spend my life exploring what that discovery made possible.
So I shrugged and mentioned Olympic ambitions or the possibility of a university sports scholarship. He sighed, let the matter drop and moved a little farther away from me.
During adolescence, another rule began to change. Solid objects had once stopped me absolutely, but sustained calm allowed the faintest part of a projection to enter thin barriers. At first I could pass only through fabric, glass or a narrow wooden partition, and doing so produced a horrible pressure in my awareness. With practice I learnt to move through thicker walls, then metal and denser structures. It was never effortless, but the old boundary was not immutable.
At sixteen, everything accelerated. That spring my projection range reached twenty miles, a breakthrough I had pursued for three years. I tested it on a calm April night with my body floating safely in a wetsuit in Plymouth Sound. My awareness travelled out along the coast and then back inland until, at the edge of my reach, I could see the Tamar Bridge lit in the distance.
Twenty miles was enough for genuine exploration. Plymouth Sound and the waters off Wembury became my territory. I told my parents I was attending night swims or open-water endurance training with the club. Then I took my board beyond the busiest water, secured myself, slipped into the darkness and lowered my breathing until the projection separated.
After years of practice, it came cleanly and easily. Then I descended.
The sea floor at night was another world. Flatfish lay buried in sand with only their eyes exposed. Thornback rays glided over eelgrass and kelp. Small-spotted catsharks cruised through the shallows. I drifted amongst them, invisible and intangible, observing ecosystems few people ever witnessed in such intimacy.
Wrecks became an obsession within the obsession. The surrounding waters held vessels lost across centuries of war, weather and maritime traffic. I found them on charts, recorded their positions and projected down to investigate.
HMS Coronation, a ninety-gun Royal Navy warship wrecked in a storm in 1691, lay broken in comparatively shallow water off Penlee Point, its surviving structure scattered across the seabed at depths of roughly 6 to 20 metres. Conger eels occupied hollows amongst timber and iron, and anemones clung to exposed surfaces.
Farther west, the James Eagan Layne, an American Liberty ship torpedoed in 1945, rested upright in about 21 metres of water near Whitsand Bay. Its cargo holds had opened to the sea, and pollack, wrasse and shoals of bib moved through the fractured hull.
Each wreck told a story through corrosion, growth and scattered debris. I filled notebooks with sketches of vessel positions, species counts, current patterns and sediment distribution. It was scientific information that mattered to nobody but me, collected by methods I could never reveal.
Boundaries mattered. I established rules early: no spying on private moments, no looking through people's windows and no following individuals. The projections were for exploring the ocean, not violating privacy.
By then I could pass through fences, walls and locked doors if I remained calm enough. I could have entered bedrooms or private offices anywhere within twenty miles. The temptation existed, but Bowen had taught me discipline. I maintained strict operational limits.
Mostly.
Devonport Naval Base was forbidden territory. I knew that deliberately entering a restricted military site, even without a physical body, was an ethical breach and would have been a serious crime if anyone could have defined what I was doing. But Royal Navy submarines were engineering marvels, and I could not resist studying them.
I told myself it was education: an attempt to understand how humans had addressed pressure, propulsion and life support beneath the sea. I did not inspect documents or listen to sensitive briefings. I confined myself to the vessels, observing hull construction, ballast systems and machinery visible during maintenance.
It was still trespass. I knew that. It was a deliberate violation of my own rule, justified by insisting that observation was not espionage. The distinction was thin.
But at sixteen, alone with an ability nobody else possessed, I was inventing its ethics as I went. The ocean was vast, its secrets were everywhere, and I was the only person who could see them in that way. I told myself that counted for something.
University disrupted everything.
I began a four-year Marine Biology MSci at the University of Plymouth. Suddenly my carefully constructed training timetable collapsed beneath lectures, practical work, laboratory requirements and the social expectations of halls of residence. I tried to preserve my routine - early meditation, evening pool sessions and weekend projections in the sea - but chemistry assignments did not care about my private discipline.
Neither did evolutionary-biology examinations or the marine-ecology lecturer who scheduled fieldwork across my planned training periods.
My range began to shrink. Twenty miles became eighteen, then fifteen. I might go a week without projecting and feel the ability atrophy. Separation became harder to trigger, and the tether between body and consciousness seemed sluggish.
Bowen noticed during our increasingly infrequent sessions.
"You've lost your edge," he said. "Your breath-hold is down forty seconds from last month, and your heart-rate control is sloppy. What's going on?"
"University. It's demanding."
"So is excellence. You don't get to coast because your degree is difficult. Either commit or quit."
But I could not commit as I had before. I could not train for six hours a day whilst attending lectures, completing practicals and joining study groups. The obsession remained. The need to reach Challenger Deep burnt as fiercely as ever. The reality of university life simply made the old intensity impossible.
I adapted. I slept less, trained around midnight when halls were quiet and arranged my timetable to create narrow practice windows. It was not ideal, but it functioned. My range stabilised at approximately fourteen miles. I was no longer improving, but at least I was not losing everything.
Then, during my third year, Mum rang on a Tuesday in October.
"Dan, sweetheart, I need to tell you something."
Her tone told me before the words did.
"The doctors found something in my lung. They're calling it stage III lung adenocarcinoma."
I sat on the bed in my room in halls, my mobile pressed to my ear whilst she explained. Lung cancer. She had never smoked, but it was there nevertheless: aggressive and already advanced. Treatment was available, but the prognosis was uncertain.
"I wanted you to hear it from me before your father rang," she said. "I'm going to fight it, sweetheart. I'm going to be fine."
She was not fine.
The following months became a blur of short journeys between the university, our family home and Derriford Hospital. I sat beside her during NHS oncology appointments and watched chemotherapy damage her body in the hope of killing the cancer first. Her blonde hair came out in clumps. She lost weight. The blue eyes that had watched me swim with such worry became hollow and remote.
I kept training. I had to. It was the only thing I could control whilst everything else fell apart - whilst Mum withered, Dad aged a decade in six months, and the doctors began using phrases such as palliative care and hospice care.
She died on a Sunday in March. Pneumonia was the immediate cause. The cancer and treatment had ravaged her immune system, and her lungs could not fight the infection.
Dad and I were with her. She was unconscious at the end, morphine keeping her comfortable whilst her breathing became shallower and shallower. Then it stopped.
The funeral was small. Her parents travelled down from Cumbria. A few cousins I barely knew attended, along with neighbours from our street. The Marine Biology department sent flowers.
Bowen appeared in a dark suit and stood at the back, paying his respects to a woman he had never met but whose son he had trained for years.
I did not cry. I could not. The grief was enormous, crushing and absolute, but it seemed to exist behind glass: visible, yet beyond touch. I gave the eulogy Dad could not manage, thanked everyone for coming and accepted condolences with the expected replies.
Then I went home and sat in the back garden, staring at the pool where my deliberate experiments had begun.
I understood something fundamental. Time was limited. Bodies were fragile. Death came regardless of plans or intentions.
Mum had spent years worrying about my obsession with the sea, with pushing limits and training towards a goal I had never explained. She had died without knowing why, without understanding that her six-year-old son had discovered something impossible and devoted his life to exploring it.
I was twenty. If I lived to eighty - an optimistic assumption, given the genetic lottery - I had sixty years left. Sixty years in which to accomplish the task I had pursued since childhood: reaching Challenger Deep, projecting approximately 10,900 metres down and seeing what existed in that absolute darkness.
Sixty years sounded generous until I considered the training required, the slow extension of range and the plateau I had already reached. Ordinary responsibilities had begun eroding the ability.
Mum's death changed the equation. It did not create my obsession, but it gave that obsession urgency. I could not wait. I could not allow ordinary life to wear the gift away. I could not reach sixty and discover that I had wasted it.
I completed the rest of that academic year on automatic pilot. I attended lectures, submitted assignments and maintained the appearance of normality. Inside, however, I had decided what would follow university.
Once the course was finished, I would dedicate everything to extending my range. No compromise. No balance. Only systematic, relentless training until I could reach the bottom of Challenger Deep.
I completed the remaining MSci course and graduated at twenty-two. By then, the degree itself seemed almost incidental. I moved back into my childhood home with Dad and organised my entire existence around increasing projection range.
Bowen helped devise the programme. He still did not know its real purpose, but he recognised commitment.
"You want to push beyond twenty miles?" he said. "Whatever you're doing, it isn't freediving any longer. It's something else, and it will demand an intensity most people cannot sustain."
"I can sustain it."
"We'll see."
The full-time programme ran seven days a week, an explicit escalation from the six training days of my adolescence. From 06.00 to 08.00 I meditated and practised breath control. From 08.00 until noon I trained physically: swimming, running and core work. Noon to 13.00 was reserved for food and recovery. From 13.00 to 17.00 I worked in the sea, undertaking controlled projections. I ate again between 17.00 and 18.00. From 18.00 until 21.00 I studied oceanography, marine biology and deep-sea ecosystems. Lights out was at 21.00.
I took part-time work at a local boatyard, maintaining equipment to cover my expenses. Dad did not charge me rent. I think he was simply relieved that I had returned after Mum's death and that he was no longer alone in the house.
He spent his days working on building sites for a regional contractor. In the evenings he came home to find me exhausted and did not ask questions I could not answer.
My range increased slowly and painfully: twenty-two miles at twenty-two, twenty-five at twenty-three and thirty at twenty-five. Each milestone demanded months of incremental progress.
I would push another half-mile, strike a wall, train for weeks until the new distance became stable, then push again. The tether between body and consciousness grew stronger and more flexible. Advanced conditioning allowed me to separate after controlled breathing and a deliberate lowering of my metabolism rather than severe oxygen deprivation, although long projections still endangered my heart and brain. Distance strained the tether, duration exhausted it, and any disruption to my body's oxygen state could force an emergency recall.
Progress was logarithmic. Every additional mile demanded more effort than the one before.
At thirty-five miles I reached what felt like a hard ceiling. I could not pass it, regardless of how intensely I trained. For six months I battered against that barrier. I altered my meditation, modified my conditioning and tested different projection techniques. Nothing worked.
Bowen noticed my frustration.
"You're forcing it," he said. "Whatever you're trying to accomplish, you're using tension instead of flow. You need a different approach."
"What approach?"
"Stop training for a week. Complete rest. Give your body and mind time to reset."
"That's the opposite of productive."
"Dan, I've been doing this for forty years. Sometimes the breakthrough comes when you stop pushing. Trust the process."
I did not want to. I felt I could not afford to waste a week. But the alternative was to continue striking the same wall, so I followed his advice.
For seven days I did no meditation, swimming or projection practice. I read, walked beside the sea and slept nine hours a night. I allowed my body to recover from years of relentless effort.
On my first attempt after the break, I reached thirty-seven miles.
The rest had released tension I had not known I carried. Some psychological obstruction had dissolved. The following week I reached thirty-eight miles. A month later I reached forty.
Then I stopped.
Forty miles was the maximum. I could feel the limit as clearly as a joint at full extension. Anything farther would cause damage. The tether might snap, the projection might dissipate, or something still worse might happen.
I tested the boundary carefully through different methods and mental frameworks. The result never changed. Forty miles was the limit of human ability - or, at least, of mine.
I was twenty-eight years old. I had spent twenty-two years practising projection and approximately fifteen years training under Bowen. I had extended my range from a few metres to forty miles.
It was enough to reach the depth of Challenger Deep from a vessel at the surface. But first I had to place my physical body in the western Pacific, close enough to the trench for every part of the journey and anything I might find there to remain within that forty-mile tether.
That required resources I did not possess. I had no research vessel, expedition funding or access to one of the most remote regions on Earth.
One evening I sat on the beach at Wembury, watching the sunset turn the sea orange and gold whilst I considered the logistics. Everything I had trained for, everything I had built and every year of obsessive preparation would be useless without the practical means to reach the trench.
Forty miles was my absolute limit. It would have to be enough.
Now I had to find a way to get there.
I found the vacancy in February 2019. It was for a marine technician with the British-led Pelagic Survey Programme aboard the research vessel Endeavour Meridian. The international expedition, organised by a British university consortium and staging from Apra Harbour in Guam, would survey sectors of the Mariana Trench.
The six-month contract began in April and included mobilisation and demobilisation around a four-month survey phase. The duties covered equipment maintenance, dive support, stores work and general vessel operations. The pay was ordinary for the role. Nothing else about it appeared remarkable.
But the planned survey stations included one close enough to Challenger Deep for the vessel itself to come within my forty-mile projection range.
My hand shook as I read the coordinates.
After twenty-two years of training, the objective I had chosen at eleven whilst watching Dr Vale's documentary might finally become accessible.
I applied that day. My CV listed boatyard work, equipment certificates and my diving qualifications: BSAC Dive Leader, rescue-management training and oxygen-administration certification. It said nothing about projections.
Bowen helped me prepare for the interview, drilling me to give conventional answers about career plans and professional goals.
Dr Frances Wren rang two weeks later. Her voice was confident and authoritative as she questioned me about hydraulic systems, winch operations and the maintenance of pressure-rated equipment. I answered using knowledge gained at the boatyard and on the certification courses I had completed specifically to qualify for work like this.
She asked why I wanted to join a deep-sea survey.
"I've always been interested in ocean exploration," I said, keeping my voice measured. "The trench region offers unusual research opportunities."
It was true, simply not in the way she imagined.
She offered me the position three days later, in March 2019. I accepted at once.
Dad stood in the kitchen doorway when I ended the call, holding a mug of coffee. His expression was unreadable.
"Six months?" he asked.
"Yes. The survey phase ends in August, then there are port and demobilisation duties to complete the contract."
"Guam."
"Yes."
He drank, then set the mug on the worktop.
"Is this what all the training has been for?"
I had never told him about the projections. I had never explained the purpose behind two decades of breath control and meditation. He probably believed I had chased some obscure swimming achievement, or used physical exhaustion to cope with Mum's death.
"It's good work," I said. "Marine research experience."
He nodded slowly. He did not believe me, but he did not press.
We had established that pattern years before: Dad recognised that something was wrong, I deflected, and both of us accepted the distance between what I said and what was true.
I spent March preparing. I sold my second-hand van because I would not need it, packed two holdalls with clothes and personal belongings, and said goodbye to Bowen during our final session at HMS Raleigh.
"You're going to find whatever you've been looking for," he said.
We stood beside the training pool as water lapped against the tiles. His grey eyes studied my face.
"Or you're going to discover it doesn't exist. Either way, you'll know. What happens then?"
I had no answer. I had never considered what came after the goal. The destination itself had consumed everything.
Bowen gripped my shoulder.
"Stay safe out there."
I departed on 8 April 2019.
The Endeavour Meridian was berthed in Apra Harbour when I arrived in Guam. She was a research vessel approximately 55 metres long, painted white, with rust stains along the waterline and a crane assembly mounted amidships.
Dr Frances Wren met me at the gangway. She was tall, with dark-brown hair streaked with grey and tied in a practical bun. Her handshake was firm.
"Welcome aboard," she said. "Chief Engineer Malcolm Haines will show you to your quarters and take you through the induction."
Malcolm Haines appeared from below deck. He was a heavy-set man of about six feet, with thinning brown hair, permanent grease beneath his nails, oil-stained overalls and work boots.
He led me along a narrow passageway to a small cabin containing two bunks, a desk and a porthole.
"You're sharing with Tariq Rahman from the geology team," Malcolm said. "He's ashore today. Stow your gear and meet me in the engine room in twenty minutes."
The cabin smelt of diesel and salt. I unpacked quickly, put my clothes into the narrow locker and placed my notebook in the desk drawer. Through the porthole I could see the grey harbour water and the quay beyond.
Twenty minutes later I found the engine room. Malcolm stood beside a workbench covered in hydraulic components, with tools spread over its scarred surface.
"Your main duties are equipment maintenance," he said. "Winch systems, sampling gear, dive equipment - anything that breaks. Dr Wren runs a tight operation. Things fail, you repair them quickly. Understood?"
"Understood."
"You've got diving qualifications?"
"Yes. BSAC Dive Leader, with rescue-management and oxygen-administration qualifications."
He nodded.
"Good."
"We've got two ROVs aboard for deep survey work, but sometimes we need human eyes on equipment problems closer to the surface. You'll be on the diving rota for that."
Perfect. Diving duties gave me a legitimate reason to be in the water, and perfect cover for my real activities. Nobody would question a marine technician spending time below the surface.
The Endeavour Meridian left Apra Harbour two days later. We headed south-west towards the trench survey area, the vessel cutting through calm Pacific water beneath a clear sky.
Dr Frances Wren assembled the entire complement in the main laboratory. There were twenty-three of us, including research scientists, technical crew and vessel operations staff. She stood beside a wall-mounted screen displaying bathymetric charts of the Mariana Trench.
"Our primary mission is a comprehensive survey of the southern trench region," she said. "We'll conduct sonar mapping, sediment sampling and ROV visual documentation over the next four months. The full six-month contract includes mobilisation and demobilisation duties at Guam. Dr Alistair Kemp's team will concentrate on biological surveys, whilst the geology team handles core sampling."
She clicked through slides showing data from previous expeditions and our target coordinates. I studied the charts closely. Our planned survey station lay thirty-eight miles from Challenger Deep, safely within my forty-mile limit.
Priya Shah sat near the front, a petite woman with long black hair tied in a ponytail and rectangular glasses intended to reduce screen glare. She operated the sonar equipment. Her readings would map the topography I intended to explore for myself.
"Any questions?" Dr Wren asked.
Nobody spoke. She dismissed us to our stations.
We reached the survey area three days later. The Endeavour Meridian took up station at coordinates marking the southern edge of our search grid, with empty ocean in every direction. Beneath the afternoon sun, the water looked almost black. Its surface was smooth apart from low swells. Approximately 10,900 metres below us lay the floor of Challenger Deep, under roughly 1,100 atmospheres of pressure.
Chief Engineer Malcolm Haines assigned me routine maintenance during the first week. I inspected winch cables, tested hydraulic systems and serviced the ROV thrusters. Standard technician's work. I kept my head down, completed every job efficiently and established myself as reliable and unremarkable.
At night, I lay in my bunk whilst Tariq Rahman snored in the berth above, calculating the best time for my first projection. I needed several uninterrupted hours and a duty that would explain why nobody had seen me.
The vessel ran rotating watches, with the complement scattered amongst different tasks throughout the day. My opportunity came twelve days into the survey. Haines assigned me an afternoon inspection of the starboard anchor-winch assembly and its associated stores. The maintenance schedule allowed several hours because I was expected to check the spares inventory as well.
I collected my tools and went topside. After making a visible start on the winch, I slipped into the nearby equipment locker. It was a cramped space packed with spare parts and diving gear, seldom entered except during repairs. I wedged myself behind a stack of crates, where anyone glancing through the hatch would miss me.
The locker smelt of machine oil and rust. Through the bulkhead I heard the steady thrum of the engines and felt the vessel rocking gently on the swell. I closed my eyes and began the breathing routine Bowen had drilled into me since I was thirteen.
Slow inhalations. Measured exhalations. My heart rate fell with every cycle. Advanced conditioning meant I no longer needed to drive myself to the edge of drowning before I could separate. Controlled breathing and a deliberately lowered metabolic state were enough, though extended projections still endangered my heart and brain.
The familiar sensation gathered gradually. My awareness loosened from flesh and bone. Then the tether drew taut and I rose free.
I floated a metre above my body, looking down at my physical form slumped behind the crates. My translucent projected hands appeared sharp in the dim light. Sounds became hollow and remote. The engine's vibration turned to muffled thunder; the movement of the ocean against the hull became an echo of pressure.
As a child, I had been unable to penetrate any solid object. In adolescence, prolonged calm had allowed me through thin doors and partitions. Years of practice had eventually taught me to cross denser barriers, although the moment of entry still demanded absolute concentration.
I passed through the locker's steel bulkhead, insulation and outer hull, emerging beside the vessel. The Pacific extended without end beneath the afternoon sun. I descended to the surface and pushed through.
The underwater world opened below me.
I dropped quickly. Daylight faded through the first hundred metres, blue yielding to darker blue and then black. I had made deep projections during training in Plymouth Sound and off Wembury, but nothing approaching this depth. Pressure meant nothing to my projected form. I had no lungs to collapse, no bones to break and no physical tissue for the ocean to compress.
Beyond the first few hundred metres I could no longer see my hands. The darkness was more complete than anything I had encountered during night projections in Plymouth Sound. There was no glow from the city, no distant vessel light, nothing but an immense and apparently empty blackness.
I continued down, estimating depth from speed and elapsed time until the figures ceased to feel meaningful. Darkness pressed against my consciousness. Not as a physical weight, but as the psychological burden of the void and my absolute isolation within it.
Then the first living lights appeared.
Bioluminescent fish drifted past like blue-green sparks. I slowed to watch them move through their invisible world: translucent bodies, oversized eyes and trailing filaments pulsing with light. They resembled species I had first seen in Dr Imogen Vale's BBC Two documentary when I was eleven.
More points of light appeared below. My non-physical sight adapted gradually, drawing shape and contrast from traces too faint for human eyes. I continued until the seafloor emerged from the dark: pale sediment over ancient rock, colourless beneath the accumulated weight of the ocean.
Challenger Deep. The deepest known point on the Earth's surface.
I had reached it.
Twenty-two years of practice, two decades of obsessive conditioning, sacrificed friendships and every relationship I had never allowed to begin - all of it had led to this place.
I hovered six metres above the bottom and slowly turned. Sediment and rock extended in every direction. Chemically active fissures and cold seeps broke the otherwise barren terrain, feeding sparse bacterial mats and isolated communities of deep-sea life. Gelatinous creatures trailed delicate tentacles through the dark. Amphipods moved across the sediment. Nothing suggested purpose or design.
I began a methodical search, covering perhaps two square miles in widening arcs. Around the seeps I found microbial growth, small anemones and pale crustaceans adapted to the immense pressure. There were no structures, no machines and no trace of anything beyond natural geology and biology.
Priya's sonar data had shown anomalies in the wider region, formations inconsistent with ordinary terrain, but I could not find them.
Frustration accumulated like a physical ache, although I had no chest in which to feel it. I had spent most of my life working towards this moment and discovered only sediment, rock and strange animals.
Another limitation became brutally clear. I could collect no samples, touch nothing and record nothing except in memory. When I tried to grasp a stone, my hand passed through it. When I attempted to scoop sediment, my fingers phased through the seabed. Projection offered observation and nothing more.
Dr Vale had descended in a submersible, gathered specimens, returned samples for analysis and recorded footage. I could only witness and remember.
I searched for what felt internally like another hour, though projected time had become strangely elastic. I found more fissures, more deep-sea life and more empty terrain. Nothing matched the sonar anomalies.
At last the tether began to pull. Distance strained it, whilst duration and my body's oxygen state determined how long I could remain separated. I had reached the point at which continuing would no longer be safe.
Reluctantly, I rose from the seabed. The emergency recall compressed the return into minutes. I ascended through the immense dark, emerged beside the Endeavour Meridian and passed through its hull. My body still waited behind the crates.
The tether snapped me into it.
Weight, breath and heartbeat returned in one violent instant. I gasped. My lungs burnt and my heart hammered against my ribs. The locker air tasted warm and stale after the abyss.
Disappointing. The word kept circling as I recovered.
Twenty-two years of preparation for a disappointing first survey.
But I had reached Challenger Deep. I had proved I could reach the target. Priya's anomalies were somewhere below; I simply needed time and a more systematic search.
I pulled myself from behind the crates, stiff after several physical hours of immobility. Then I collected my tools and finished the winch inspection and stores check I had been assigned. Nobody had noticed anything unusual. The Endeavour Meridian continued its work, every member of the complement occupied by their own duties.
That night I lay beneath Tariq's snoring and planned my next projection. The survey phase would last four months. My opportunities were limited, and each attempt needed to cover fresh ground.
I had come too far to leave without answers.
Over the following days, I made two more projections under the cover of authorised solitary maintenance and inventory work. Those second and third searches expanded the grid across the open seabed. I memorised every outcrop, seep and sediment plain within the area. Both attempts ended in failure.
My fourth projection began during another scheduled afternoon stores task. I secured the hatch, settled behind the crates and lowered my metabolism through twenty minutes of controlled breathing. Lightness spread through my limbs. Then came the gentle tidal pull as my consciousness lifted from my body.
I hovered a metre above it, noting the slack jaw and closed eyes before turning towards the hull. Passing through the steel still felt wrong, like brushing against a cobweb that ought to exist but did not.
Then the Pacific swallowed me.
I descended quickly, conserving as much of my safe projection time as possible. Sunlight disappeared above. Total darkness wrapped itself around me, relieved only by occasional bioluminescent flashes. The pressure could have crushed a conventional submarine, yet my consciousness moved through it more easily than air.
On the first three searches I had covered the same broad grid in overlapping sections. This time I angled south-west, beyond my previous routes. My feet met the sediment and I moved forwards, scanning the terrain.
For twenty minutes I found nothing but the same austere landscape. Then the seafloor dropped away.
I stopped at the edge of a canyon I had not seen before. Its walls descended into darkness and the opening was perhaps nine metres wide. I had previously avoided narrow canyon systems because they made orientation difficult and consumed precious time, but most of the open terrain within my range had now been searched.
I descended into the gap.
The walls closed around me, ancient rock slick with bacterial films. A brittle star clung to an outcrop, its arms folded against the stone. I travelled through the canyon for what felt like ten or fifteen minutes. Projected time slipped and stretched, making exact estimates impossible.
The tether did not follow the bends of my route; it related directly to the distance between my consciousness and my body. Even so, I could feel duration increasing its pull.
The canyon curved left, then right. Its walls narrowed to six metres apart.
That was when I saw the doorway.
Not a cave. Not a fracture. A doorway.
I stopped a metre above the canyon floor. For several seconds my thoughts dissolved into static as I stared at the opening cut into the rock face.
It stood nearly four metres high and more than two metres wide, with perfect geometric proportions. Its edges showed deliberate cuts in the volcanic stone, yet they were too smooth and exact for any tool I recognised.
A massive metal frame surrounded the entrance. Thick marine growth covered its panels, and corrosion had bitten deeply into portions of the alloy, suggesting an age beyond any human structure. Beneath the growth were engravings rather than writing: geometric figures whose relationships made my eyes ache. Their angles seemed to imply dimensions the flat surface could not possess.
Enough remained beneath the encrustation to prove intentional workmanship.
My pulse accelerated. I felt my physical body's reaction through the tether, several horizontal miles away aboard the vessel and approximately 10,900 metres above. My lungs began to burn. My heartbeat struck faster against my ribs.
I passed through the doorway.
Beyond it lay a chamber perhaps fifteen metres across and eighteen metres deep. Its walls curved with the same impossible smoothness, excavated from the rock with a precision that made human engineering seem crude.
Structures occupied the interior.
Docking cradles. That was the only interpretation I could find. Frameworks of corroded metal extended from the walls and floor, shaped to hold vessels. Their curves and angles matched no naval architecture I had studied. The attachment points were designed for hulls with configurations that made no sense.
Three vessels remained in their cradles.
I approached the nearest, drifting through clouds of disturbed sediment. Its hull was approximately six metres long and two metres wide. The shape was wrong. It was not streamlined for movement through water or rounded to distribute pressure. It had angles that ought to have failed under roughly 1,100 atmospheres.
The material resembled metal without behaving like it. Its matt surface reflected almost nothing. Barnacles and tube worms covered sections of it, but the hull itself showed no corrosion.
I circled it. There were no seams, rivets, welds or joints. The entire hull appeared to have been formed as one piece.
My breathing quickened in the body far above. The design defied every principle I knew. Panels that might have been viewports sat at useless angles. Protrusions served no hydrodynamic purpose. At the stern, the hull curved inwards rather than tapering, producing drag that would have made efficient movement through water impossible.
Unless it had not been designed for water.
The thought arrived whole. I pushed it aside and moved to the second vessel.
It was smaller, perhaps four metres long, and its hull appeared almost crystalline. That should have been impossible, yet its translucent surface caught the faint flashes from passing organisms and divided them into patterns that revealed an intricate geometric lattice within.
The third vessel had partly collapsed. Whatever composed its hull had finally failed under time or pressure. Sections lay scattered across the chamber floor, but their edges looked melted rather than broken, as if the substance had liquefied and solidified again in altered shapes.
Nothing obeyed principles I understood.
I drew back to examine the chamber as a whole. Machinery lined the walls. Some structures resembled control panels, but there were no switches, keys or controls I could identify, only smooth surfaces engraved with the same disturbing geometry. Conduits crossed the ceiling, linking systems in patterns that implied function whilst resisting interpretation.
The chamber was flooded, corroded and colonised by thousands of years of life. Sediment lay nearly a metre deep on some horizontal surfaces. Marine growth had formed layer upon layer over the entrance frame.
The age struck me hardest. This installation predated anything built by our civilisation, not by decades or centuries, but by millennia.
The tether pulled harder. My body needed air.
I continued.
A corridor opened at the rear of the docking chamber. I passed into a tunnel cut with the same flawless precision. It ran straight for nine metres before dividing at a T-junction. I took the left passage, which curved down into the rock.
Chambers opened along it. I entered each and memorised what I saw.
One contained rows of cylindrical vessels mounted against the walls. They might have been storage containers. Each stood about 1.2 metres tall and was sealed by a corroded cap. I could not see inside or manipulate them.
Another chamber resembled living quarters. Low platforms might once have served as beds, whilst other surfaces suggested tables or workstations. The proportions were wrong for human occupants. Everything sat too close to the floor, and the spaces between fixtures implied unfamiliar bodies and patterns of movement.
A third room was empty except for a sphere two metres in diameter, suspended within a corroded frame. The sphere was made of the same impervious material as the first vessel. Conduits ran from it into the walls, and a single seam encircled its equator. I circled it three times without discovering its purpose.
The corridor divided again. I took the right fork and mapped every turn in my memory. The installation spread through the rock as a network of descending passages and intersecting rooms. Its scale implied an excavation project beyond anything I had imagined.
How long had construction taken? How many workers had been involved? What tools could carve volcanic rock so precisely beneath an approximately 10,900-metre water column?
The tether burnt. My lungs were screaming and my heart battered my ribs, but I pushed deeper.
The corridor opened into a chamber that dwarfed the docking bay. It was at least thirty metres across, with a ceiling nine metres above the floor. Equipment filled the interior in arrangements that suggested central operations. A command centre, perhaps.
Smooth engraved panels lined the walls. Conduits linked mechanisms I could not identify.
At the far end, light pulsed.
I stopped in the darkness, staring at a blue-green glow emanating from a bank of machinery. It was neither the random flash of a jellyfish nor the steady light of a bacterial colony. These pulses followed a repeating rhythm.
Active systems.
The tether jerked. My body was failing.
I should have returned immediately, but I could not. I moved towards the light.
The illumination came from panels embedded within the machinery. Three short pulses. A pause. Two long pulses. Another pause. One short pulse. Then the sequence began again.
Unlike everything else, the panels were clean. There was no sediment or marine growth on them. Something had maintained this part of the installation whilst the surrounding rooms decayed.
I moved closer. Conduits disappeared into the floor and ceiling. I could not hear the machinery in any ordinary sense, but its vibration passed through my projected form as a low thrum of power. Systems abandoned before the beginning of recorded history were still operating.
Movement flickered at the edge of my vision.
I turned.
Something shifted in the shadows at the far side of the chamber. It was too distant to distinguish and too fast to follow, no more than an impression of mass moving through the flooded room with deliberate purpose.
The danger to my body triggered an emergency recall.
My consciousness snapped back along the tether. The transition struck harder than any I had experienced. I convulsed behind the crates and dragged air into burning lungs. My pulse was far too fast and uneven. Pain stabbed through my chest.
I remained against the locker bulkhead for ten minutes, waiting for my heart to settle. My hands shook. Cold sweat soaked my shirt.
Something was down there, maintaining the technology and preserving active systems after thousands of years.
And I had projected directly into its home.
I spent the next three days in my cabin whenever I was off duty. Tariq asked whether I was ill when I missed breakfast on the first morning.
"Caught some sort of bug," I told him through the door. "I just need to sleep it off."
He brought me a tray at midday: soup, plain crackers and a bottle of water. I ate half the crackers. The soup went cold beside my bunk.
The cabin measured roughly 2.5 by 3 metres. Two berths were fixed to the bulkhead, with a narrow desk beneath the porthole and a locker for personal kit. During those three days I learnt every rivet in the ceiling and every scratch on the door frame. I counted until I lost track somewhere beyond two hundred.
Footsteps passed along the companionway outside. I recognised Tom Arkwright's gait: a steady rhythm interrupted by the slight drag of his left heel, where the sole of his boot had worn unevenly.
He stopped outside on the second afternoon and knocked twice.
"Dan, do you need someone from medical?"
I stayed silent on my bunk, my back pressed to the bulkhead.
"Tariq says you're looking rough. Dr Wren can-"
"I'm fine," I said. "I just need rest."
The silence lasted long enough for me to think he had gone. Then his footsteps continued towards the mess.
Bethan Lloyd knocked on the third day, three quick raps, a pause, then two more.
"Dan, I've brought some ginger tea if your stomach's still bothering you. It helped me when I caught a bug in the Bering Sea last year."
I stared at the door and said nothing.
"I'll leave it outside. Just let someone know if you need anything, all right?"
Her footsteps receded.
Forty minutes later, when I was certain the companionway was empty, I opened the door. A flask sat on the deck, still warm. I carried it inside, poured the tea down the sink in our shared heads and returned the empty flask to the same place.
They meant well. Tom with his practical concern, Bethan with her remedies and stories from previous surveys. They were good people doing their work and preserving morale through months at sea.
I could not look at them without remembering what I had seen approximately 10,900 metres below.
I had felt certain that my projection had been detected. Something had responded to my presence in the command centre. Perhaps the ancient machinery perceived consciousness differently from matter. Sensors designed by a non-human intelligence might register projections as energy, electromagnetic disturbance or some property for which humanity had no instrument or name.
Bowen had once mentioned that deep meditation altered brain activity enough to appear on an EEG. What if the facility detected the projected consciousness itself? Astral projection was a speculative phrase I had avoided, but perhaps whatever lived below possessed a science for the phenomenon I had spent my life approaching blindly.
I sat with my back against the cold bulkhead, knees drawn up and hands clasped behind my neck, using the posture Bowen had taught me for controlled breathing. Except my breathing was not controlled.
Even after three days, my resting pulse remained close to ninety. After twenty-two years of conditioning, it should have been in the low fifties.
A worse possibility circled endlessly through my mind.
Perhaps I had awakened something.
Most of the facility had been dark. Corrosion, sediment and structural collapse suggested immense abandonment. Yet the command centre contained clean panels, pulsing light and active conduits. Something maintained those machines. Something might have lain dormant until my consciousness crossed sealed rooms and announced itself.
I pressed my palms against my eyes until pale shapes bloomed behind the lids.
Dr Catriona Bell had described my first projection, after the hotel-pool accident in Puerto de la Cruz, as a hallucination caused by severe oxygen deprivation. Perhaps she had been right. Perhaps every projection since then had been an elaborate product of damaged brain chemistry, reinforced by years of repeatedly endangering myself.
Perhaps there was no doorway, no ancient machinery and no movement in the shadows.
But my hands were still shaking.
I had two choices.
I could stop projecting, complete the survey and the subsequent demobilisation work at Guam, then return to Plymouth. I could find permanent boatyard work, move back into Dad's house if he would have me, and tell Bowen that fifteen years of training had merely taught me discipline.
I could allow Challenger Deep to keep its secrets.
The cabin walls seemed to close around me. I stood and paced four steps to the door, turned and paced four steps back to the porthole.
Or I could go deeper.
The facility extended through a complex network of volcanic rock. I had mapped only a fraction of it. The command centre lay perhaps one quarter of a mile from the canyon entrance, and its corridors branched towards rooms I had not explored. Whatever maintained the active systems existed somewhere beyond them.
I had practised projection for twenty-two years. Bowen had trained me for fifteen. I had extended my range from a few metres to forty miles through conditioning that cost me relationships, ordinary career progress and anything resembling a conventional life. Mum had died worried about my obsession. Every degree module, diving qualification and job I had taken had been chosen to bring me closer to this trench.
Walking away meant admitting that those sacrifices had led nowhere.
I sat on the bunk again. Through the porthole lay grey Pacific water, with occasional organisms flickering beyond the glass. The Endeavour Meridian remained at its survey station, within my forty-mile range of the canyon and the buried facility.
My notebook was in the locker. After the fourth projection I had filled three pages with chamber dimensions, corridor layouts, machinery, vessels and the symbols engraved on the corroded panels. I had kept records like these since I was eleven, when I watched Dr Imogen Vale's documentary on a VHS recording made from BBC Two.
The fear was real, a tightness in my chest that would not yield to Bowen's breathing exercises. Whatever existed below possessed technology that had survived for millennia whilst civilisations rose and vanished on the surface.
But the need to know was stronger.
I had spent two decades proving to myself that consciousness could exist beyond flesh. Challenger Deep was more than a destination. It was the validation around which I had built my life.
I took out the notebook and studied my sketches. Even in pencil, the doorway's geometry looked wrong. I had tried to reproduce it accurately, but the angles remained uncomfortable to examine.
Something below might know I existed.
The question was whether it cared.
On the fourth morning, I showered, put on clean clothes and went to breakfast. The mess fell quiet when I entered. Twelve people sat around the bolted tables with mugs and trays, and several conversations stopped halfway through a sentence.
Tom looked up from the navigation charts spread across a corner table.
"Morning, Dan. Feeling better?"
"Yes."
I collected a tray and took scrambled eggs and toast I did not want.
"Stomach bug's passed," I said.
Bethan sat with the geology team two tables away. She caught my eye and smiled. I nodded, then chose an empty table near the porthole and sat with my back to the room.
The eggs tasted of nothing. I ate them in methodical mouthfuls whilst conversation gradually resumed around me: weather systems, sonar-grid completion, somebody's sister getting married in July. Normal expedition talk amongst professionals conducting legitimate scientific work.
I finished the toast, returned my tray and went to the equipment bay.
Haines found me an hour later testing hydraulic pressure in the starboard winch. He watched from the doorway for half a minute before speaking.
"You fit to resume full duties?"
"Yes, Chief."
"Rahman said you looked pretty rough."
I checked the gauge and entered the figure in the maintenance log.
"I just needed a few days."
Haines studied me with the expression Dad used when I came home from midnight sessions at sixteen, my wetsuit still dripping: the look of a man who knew I was lying but could not prove how.
"All right," he said. "The starboard ROV needs thruster maintenance this afternoon. You're on the rota."
"Understood."
He left. I completed the hydraulic test and moved on to the cable inspection, allowing routine work to occupy my hands whilst my mind remained in the dark below.
I waited another five days before projecting again. I re-established my pattern, attended every meal, completed every maintenance job, joined the weekly safety drill and made myself visible. Tom stopped watching me with concern. Bethan stopped leaving tea outside the cabin. I became background again, one more technician keeping the Endeavour Meridian operational.
On the sixth day I volunteered for a multi-hour inventory of the aft stores during the quieter watch. Nobody objected. Inventory was tedious work everyone avoided. I took the clipboard aft and secured the hatch behind me.
The compartment was smaller than the first locker, perhaps two metres by 2.5 metres, packed with crates and spares. I completed enough of the count to make my progress credible, then settled between two stacks at the corner farthest from the hatch, my back against the bulkhead and my legs extended.
My hands were steady when I began the breathing sequence.
The fear remained, heavy in my chest, but I had chosen. Turn back or go deeper. There was no partial exploration that could satisfy twenty-two years of training.
The trench would show me what it contained, or it would show me nothing. Either way, I had to know.
Separation came easily. Perhaps muscle memory overrode conscious fear, or some part of me had accepted what followed. My consciousness rose a metre from my body and passed through the hull.
I descended rapidly through the Pacific night. Subjectively, the journey took about eighteen minutes, although much less physical time seemed to pass during the most intense projections. Pressure sufficient to destroy my body offered no resistance.
The canyon appeared below. I followed its turns to the geometric entrance and passed through without hesitation.
The docking chamber was unchanged. Three ancient vessels remained in their cradles whilst bioluminescent organisms drifted through the flooded space. I crossed it quickly and entered the descending corridor, passing the sealed cylinders, the low living platforms and the suspended sphere.
Blue-green light shone ahead.
I stopped at the entrance to the command centre and observed from the corridor. The clean panels pulsed in their regular sequence. Power moved through conduits built by an intelligence that was not human.
Nothing stirred in the shadows.
I waited for five minutes by my uncertain internal count. There was no sign of detection and no presence responding to me, only ancient machinery performing cycles established before humans learnt to write.
Perhaps the previous movement had been a current or a deep-sea animal. Perhaps fear had transformed something ordinary into a threat.
I entered the command centre and crossed between the active panels to a passage on the far side.
The corridor sloped deeper through the rock. New chambers opened around me, each containing equipment whose purpose I could only guess.
One held rows of geometric tanks. Residue inside them suggested biological cultivation, although whatever they had once contained had long since dissolved.
Another housed a dark, inactive apparatus that resembled a three-dimensional display system, recognisable only because of the science fiction I had consumed as a teenager.
A third chamber was empty except for symbols carved across every wall, the floor and the ceiling. Together they formed patterns painful to observe directly.
I continued down. The installation extended through multiple levels and connecting networks. This was no temporary outpost. It was permanent infrastructure, designed for prolonged occupation.
Approximately one quarter of a mile beneath the canyon entrance, I reached the deepest chamber accessible by that route.
It was fifteen metres across, with a domed ceiling and walls shaped from volcanic rock with the same flawless precision as the outer doorway. It contained no ruined machinery.
It contained six bodies.
They hung inside transparent cylinders filled with preservation fluid that remained clear despite the facility's age. Each cylinder was approximately 2.5 metres tall and nearly a metre wide, arranged in a circle around the centre of the chamber.
The bodies were not human.
I had understood that possibility from the proportions of the living quarters, the shapes of the vessels and the impossible technology. Seeing them made it undeniable.
Each being stood a little over two metres tall. Each possessed four arms and an elongated skull. The placement and size of the eye sockets departed from ordinary human proportions, although the face retained a disturbing suggestion of bilateral structure. Grey-green skin showed through the preserving fluid, its texture poised somewhere between scales and smooth flesh. There was no visible breathing equipment, but narrow structures along the neck might once have functioned as gills.
I drifted towards the nearest cylinder. The being appeared peaceful. Its four hands had been folded across its chest in what might have been a ceremonial arrangement. It wore no clothing or apparatus.
The fluid surrounding it showed no contamination or decay.
These beings had waited in the darkness for thousands of years, perhaps tens of thousands, whilst humanity changed on the surface. They had remained here through the rise and collapse of civilisations, through the invention of ships and the first hesitant descents into an ocean we had imagined empty.
I did not know whether they had built the facility. They might have been workers, inhabitants, prisoners or preserved representatives of some other species. The uncertainty made the chamber more terrible, not less.
My safe projection time was ending. The tether pulled towards my physical body aboard the vessel, several horizontal miles away and approximately 10,900 metres above.
I remained for one more minute, memorising the six preserved beings and the implications of their presence.
Humanity was not the only intelligence to have reached this world. Whatever civilisation had made or occupied the installation possessed knowledge that reduced our greatest achievements to the fumbling experiments of children.
The tether yanked hard.
My consciousness snapped back through the facility's corridors, out through the canyon and up through approximately 10,900 metres of ocean. It crossed the several horizontal miles to the Endeavour Meridian and plunged into my physical body, which was wedged between crates in the stores.
I gasped. My lungs burnt, my heart hammered against my ribs and my hands began to shake despite the steadiness I had managed earlier. This time, however, it was not simply fear. It was the weight of a discovery that changed everything.
Whatever I had found in those depths, and whoever those six preserved beings had been, their existence overturned every assumption humanity held about its place in the universe. We were not the first intelligence to explore these oceans. We were not the first to build, create or leave evidence of ourselves in the deepest places on Earth. And somewhere down there, something was still maintaining their technology.
I remained between the crates for twenty minutes, waiting for my hands to steady and my heart rate to fall, although I knew neither would ever return entirely to normal. Not after what I had seen.
The inventory clipboard lay beside me, blank apart from the date at the top. I picked it up and began recording spare parts and stores quantities. My hands performed the familiar work whilst my mind remained at the bottom of the trench, with six beings that had waited in darkness since before recorded human history.
For the rest of that day I did nothing reckless. I completed the inventory, ate in the mess and spoke when spoken to. That evening I filled pages of my hidden notebooks with every detail I could remember: the four arms, the translucent preservation fluid, the ceremonial arrangement of the hands and the unreadable symbols beneath each cylinder.
I allowed myself several days to recover. Even with twenty-two years of conditioning, a projection to Challenger Deep placed an appalling strain on my heart and brain. Distance tightened the tether. Duration weakened it. Controlled breathing and a deliberately lowered metabolic state could start and sustain a projection without bringing me close to drowning, as I had done as a child, but no amount of training made prolonged separation safe.
When the Endeavour Meridian's survey rota next assigned me a long, solitary stores-maintenance task, I prepared for another attempt. I checked that nobody was likely to enter, settled into the concealed gap between the crates and slowed my breathing until my pulse sank into the rhythm Bowen had drilled into me.
Then I separated.
The journey down took only a fraction of the time it would have taken in my body. My consciousness passed through the vessel's hull, crossed the horizontal distance to the canyon and descended through the black water. By then, calm projections could penetrate steel and dense rock, although resistance increased with thickness. I followed the route I had memorised, entered the geometric doorway and passed through the active command centre.
I returned first to the chamber containing the six preserved four-armed beings. They remained exactly as I had left them, suspended in clear fluid with their hands folded across their narrow torsos. Nothing in the chamber suggested whether they had built the installation, worked within it or been collected like everything else I was about to find.
Beyond them, a corridor sloped down more steeply than any passage I had yet encountered. Its walls were not carved volcanic rock but a smooth, almost ceramic material. Blue-green bioluminescence pulsed through channels in its surface. The pattern reminded me of blood travelling through veins, or information moving through a circuit.
After about 15 metres, the corridor broadened into a chamber that made everything before it seem like an entrance hall. It extended beyond the useful range of my projected perception and had to be at least 60 metres across. The ceiling vanished into darkness. The walls curved in a gentle arc, suggesting that the room formed part of an enormous circle or sphere constructed beneath the trench floor.
Arranged along those walls, in precise rows stretching upwards beyond sight, stood cylinders identical to the six I had just left.
There were hundreds of them.
I drifted forwards. The containers nearest the entrance held creatures I did not recognise. One had a segmented exoskeleton and far too many articulated joints. Another possessed translucent flesh through which its organs still pulsed with stored bioluminescence. A roughly humanoid figure was covered from head to foot in crystalline growths that caught and refracted the ambient light.
Every cylinder contained the same perfectly clear preservation fluid. Every body had been positioned with the same formal arrangement of its limbs. A panel of unreadable symbols marked every display.
I moved along the first row.
There was a being nearly 2.5 metres tall, with six limbs radiating from a central column. A smaller creature, perhaps a metre high, had folded wings and what resembled metallic feathers. Another appeared to consist chiefly of tentacles wrapped around a central mass, its organs visible through semi-transparent skin.
The next row held more, and so did the one beyond it. From the entrance I could distinguish twenty rows, each containing at least forty cylinders. Every container held something that had lived, died and been preserved in darkness beneath approximately 10,900 metres of ocean.
I rose to gauge the chamber's true dimensions. The rows continued deeper into the installation and disappeared into branching corridors. This was not one collection room. It was a network of galleries.
My physical heart began to beat faster aboard the Endeavour Meridian, several horizontal miles away and almost 10,900 metres above me. I could feel its hammering through the tether, transmitted along whatever connection still anchored my consciousness to flesh and bone.
I descended to floor level and continued between row after row of beings that could not have evolved on Earth. The preservation apparatus showed no deterioration. There was no corrosion on the cylinders, no cloudiness in the fluid and no visible decay in the specimens.
Whatever powered these systems had been operating for...
I could not finish the thought. I could not assign an age to construction this sophisticated, this perfectly preserved and this far beyond human engineering.
The first passage off the main chamber led to a smaller gallery that nevertheless contained at least a hundred cylinders. I moved through it quickly, fixing details in my memory for later transcription. The occupants exhibited different body plans, sizes and evolutionary histories, yet all appeared to possess the marks of intelligence or tool use. Something had judged every one of them worthy of preservation.
A second passage opened into a gallery three times larger. A third led to clusters of smaller rooms arranged like museum wings, each containing specimens grouped according to some principle I could not determine. Perhaps they were ordered by home world, evolutionary relationship or date of acquisition.
I stopped counting after five hundred cylinders.
The fourth passage descended sharply, dropping perhaps 30 metres through the rock before opening into a chamber that stopped me completely.
The cylinders there contained human beings.
The first held a woman about 1.5 metres tall, dressed in animal hides stitched with plant fibre. Thick black hair hung down her back. She had broad features, a pronounced brow and skin weathered by exposure. Stone implements hung from a belt at her waist: a hand axe, a scraper and another tool that might have been used to work hides.
The panel below her displayed the same incomprehensible markings. Figures in one corner appeared to follow a decimal system, perhaps recording an age or date, but without any context for the calendar they meant nothing to me.
The next cylinder held a man with lighter skin and a different facial structure, dressed in woven cloth. A bronze knife hung at his side and copper ornaments encircled his neck and wrists.
The third occupant wore armour that resembled equipment from the Roman period. The fourth was a woman in clothing that appeared to be medieval European dress. The fifth was a man whose uniform looked like that of an eighteenth-century naval officer.
I moved faster, drifting past cylinder after cylinder. They held people from different eras, cultures and continents: someone in Polynesian ceremonial dress; a person in ancient Chinese robes; another wrapped in furs that suggested an Indigenous Arctic culture; a man in what appeared to be Victorian European formal wear.
Each had been preserved perfectly. Each had been arranged with folded arms. Each was dead, catalogued and displayed in a gallery beneath Challenger Deep.
I counted at least sixty human specimens before the room divided into further passages. My consciousness felt stretched between horror and the desperate need to observe, document and understand the full extent of the installation.
The next galleries contained more humans interspersed with creatures from other worlds, according to no pattern I could yet discern. A woman in clothing from the 1920s stood beside something with chitinous plating and compound eyes. A man in robes that might have been ancient Mesopotamian occupied the next display to a being that appeared to have evolved from aquatic life.
Then I saw the children.
Some were so young that their presence suggested something worse than impersonal scientific collection. I wanted to turn away, but forced myself onwards. I could neither touch nor free them. I could not take samples or photographs. All I could do was witness and remember.
Deeper in the galleries, the organisational principle became clearer. Within each species, the specimens were arranged broadly by chronology. The human displays progressed from prehistoric people towards those from recorded history, revealing changes in anatomy, technology and culture across millennia. The non-human displays seemed to follow comparable sequences, earlier forms giving way to more developed descendants.
This was not merely a collection. It was a systematic record of intelligent life on Earth and elsewhere, maintained over spans of time that reduced human civilisation to a brief flicker.
I found specimens that predated modern humanity. Their heavier bones and unfamiliar skull proportions suggested Neanderthals, Denisovans or another extinct branch of the human family, although I could not identify them with certainty. Their cylinders carried the same categories of symbols as those holding modern humans. Whatever created the collection appeared to assign them equal significance.
The galleries spread through the core of the facility in a network designed for observation. Broad corridors permitted easy passage between chambers. Viewing spaces had been positioned at different heights and angles. This was not a warehouse. It was a museum, a curated exhibition intended to be visited by whatever maintained it.
I passed through gallery after gallery. I lost count of the rooms after twenty and of the specimens after a thousand. The scale overwhelmed my ability to retain individual details. What remained were fragments: a child's face behind transparent material; clawed hands folded across an armoured chest; eyes in arrangements ranging from two to dozens, all closed or filmed over by death.
The deepest gallery I reached lay perhaps half a mile beneath the canyon entrance. By then the identical passages had ruined my sense of distance. The chamber resembled the others in construction but contained only about thirty cylinders, arranged in a ring around a central platform.
The occupants appeared to come from earlier periods of collection. The humans wore unfamiliar clothing made from materials that suggested pre-agricultural societies. The non-human specimens possessed simpler tools and what looked like more rudimentary cultural artefacts.
At the centre stood something unlike the cylinders.
A transparent sphere about 3 metres in diameter rested on a plinth covered with symbols. Inside it floated a mass of organic tissue suspended in clear fluid. It had no body plan I could recognise, only complex folds and interlocking structures that suggested intelligence without fixed form. It might have represented an early evolutionary stage, or a species that had never developed a stable physical configuration.
I stared for what seemed like five minutes, trying to understand what I had found.
Earth was a collection site.
The conclusion assembled itself from everything around me. This installation could not be unique. The range of specimens, the systematic ordering and the enormous span of collection dates all pointed to a project conducted according to a consistent method. If humans had been taken from successive eras, then someone had visited Earth for tens of thousands of years, perhaps much longer.
They had harvested samples.
Representatives of terrestrial life had been taken across millennia and preserved for study, documentation or some purpose beyond anything I could imagine. We had never been alone. Every human culture had developed in the presence of observers.
Every advance, migration, war, peace, birth and death had occurred whilst something watched and periodically selected specimens for these galleries. Humanity had built its civilisations, religions and philosophies without knowing that another intelligence treated Earth as a nature reserve, a survey site or a source from which exhibits could be collected.
The process had begun before we were fully human, before language, agriculture and recorded history. The extinct hominins proved at least that much. Something had watched our development and preserved its stages in a museum at the bottom of the ocean.
The tether tightened. My projection time was running out, and the oxygen demands of my distant body were becoming urgent. Still I remained before the sphere, trapped by the implications spreading out from it through every gallery.
I thought of unsolved disappearances and of stories about people taken by lights in the sky or beings beneath the waves. I thought of ancient accounts of visitors from the heavens and gods emerging from the sea. Terror made the connections feel convincing, but I knew I had no evidence that every legend or missing person belonged to this place. Those thoughts were frightened speculation, not proof.
The collection itself was proof enough.
The tether pulled hard. I surrendered to the emergency recall, and my consciousness raced back through the galleries, past ranks of preserved beings and the chamber of six four-armed figures. It passed the command centre with its pulsing blue-green illumination, escaped through the canyon and crossed the 10,900-metre ascent in seconds.
I slammed into my body hard enough to crack the back of my head against a crate.
My lungs burnt. My heart pounded and my hands shook so violently that I had to press them against the deck. I remained in darkness between the crates, gasping, whilst my mind replayed cylinders receding into shadow, perfectly preserved faces and the terrible precision with which everything had been arranged.
After several minutes I forced myself to sit upright. I could not risk being found unconscious in the stores. I breathed as Bowen had taught me, counted each pulse and waited until the irregular beats settled. Then I finished enough of my assigned work to account for the time I had spent alone.
That night I recorded the galleries in my notebooks until my hand cramped. I wrote down every uncertain identification as uncertain. Roman-looking armour. Possible Victorian evening dress. Possible Neanderthal or Denisovan. I drew the arrangement of the chambers and the sphere containing the formless tissue. Projected time had seemed longer than the interval measured by the vessel's clocks, but the attempt had still lasted dangerously long.
I spent the following days recovering. I worked, ate and slept according to the rota. Nobody questioned the fatigue because everyone aboard the Endeavour Meridian was exhausted by then. I did not tell Dr Frances Wren, Chief Engineer Malcolm Haines, Priya Shah or Tariq Rahman what lay beneath us. There was nothing I could show them. No sample, no photograph, no instrument reading. Only my memory.
But one unanswered question prevented me from stopping.
Something was maintaining the facility.
The lights moved through the walls. The consoles remained active. I had seen motion in the command centre that I could not explain. The museum had not merely survived. It was still operating.
I waited until my pulse had remained normal for several days and the stores rota again gave me an authorised period alone. This would be my final projection. I told myself that before I began, and repeated it whilst I secured the door, settled behind the crates and lowered my breathing to the controlled minimum that made separation possible.
My body lay aboard the Endeavour Meridian, several horizontal miles from the facility and approximately 10,900 metres above it. The limit of my tether remained forty miles. I was within range, but duration and oxygen were the greater dangers now.
I let my consciousness slip free.
For the last time I crossed the black water, descended into the canyon and passed through the geometric entrance. The docking chamber and its three impossible vessels slid past beneath me. I crossed the former living areas, entered the command centre and followed the route into the museum galleries.
I returned to the chamber containing the transparent sphere and its formless mass of preserved tissue. On the far side of the ring, a passage led down at a steeper angle than anything I had encountered. It dropped at roughly thirty degrees into darkness that swallowed even the blue-green veins within its walls.
I moved into it.
The passage widened after about 30 metres and opened into a space that made every other chamber seem small. It stretched at least 150 metres across. The ceiling vanished into darkness beyond the reach of even my heightened projected perception. Its walls curved away in both directions, suggesting a sphere or dome buried within the volcanic rock beneath Challenger Deep.
Blue-green illumination coursed through channels in the walls, brighter and faster than elsewhere in the installation. The sequences raced across the ceramic surface with a purposeful urgency.
At the centre stood a raised platform about 15 metres in diameter. Tall devices encircled it, perhaps consoles or terminals, each rising roughly 3 metres and constructed from the same incorruptible material I had seen in the command centre. Symbols covered their surfaces, glowing so fiercely that even my non-physical perception recoiled from them.
Then I saw what stood behind the consoles.
My consciousness drew back.
There was no adequate language for them. My mind attempted to classify the shapes before me, but the information refused to resolve into anything coherent.
They occupied the chamber. I knew that with certainty. Yet they also existed somewhere else at the same time, their forms extending through dimensions that human perception had no means of accessing. What I saw could only have been the portion of each entity that intersected ordinary space.
The nearest appeared to be approximately 6 metres tall, although its height altered as different parts of it phased in and out of visibility. In places its surface looked smooth and metallic. Elsewhere it seemed organic and fluid. Sometimes it possessed both qualities simultaneously, in geometries my mind could not follow.
Colour shifted across it: deep purples, greens unlike any wavelength I had perceived before, and areas of blackness that somehow contained light.
It did not walk or float. It transitioned between positions as space folded around it. One moment it stood beside a console at the platform's western edge. The next it occupied a point near the northern wall, without crossing the distance between them.
Three other entities inhabited the chamber, perhaps four. I could not keep an accurate count. Looking directly at them fragmented my projected vision. I would focus upon one form and perceive two overlapping locations. I would follow a movement and lose track of which entity I had been watching.
They were working.
That fact cut through the incomprehension. These were the beings responsible for the movement I had glimpsed in the command centre, or else the cause of it. They were carrying out maintenance with methodical precision.
One moved among the consoles, extending appendages - limbs, tendrils or something for which I had no proper word - into sequences of glowing symbols too complex to follow. Another remained near the wall where several blue-green channels converged, altering the rhythm of the light. A third phased into the platform until only its upper portion remained visible, the rest occupying space beneath the floor.
I watched for perhaps thirty seconds. It might have been longer. Time became unreliable in their presence. Every action was exact and deliberate. There was no wasted movement and no hesitation.
How long had they repeated those tasks?
The thought struck hard enough to send my consciousness drifting backwards by nearly a metre. They, or beings like them, had constructed this place, cut chambers through volcanic rock and installed preservation systems that remained flawless after thousands of years, perhaps millions. They had collected human beings throughout our development and done the same to intelligent species from worlds I could not name.
And they were still here.
They continued maintaining their collection with the same precision they might have employed before humanity learnt to make fire.
The nearest collector shifted across the platform, passing through two of the consoles as if it occupied a separate layer of reality. It stopped less than a metre from where my consciousness hovered.
I froze. My projected form possessed no physical momentum, but every part of my awareness locked in animal terror.
At first it gave no indication that it had detected me. Its shape continued to change through impossible configurations whilst its extensions interfaced with a console. Symbols blazed more brightly beneath its touch.
Perhaps it could not perceive a projection. Perhaps my disembodied consciousness occupied some frequency or dimension it did not monitor.
Then part of the collector rotated.
It was not the whole body, only a structure that might have been a head or sensory cluster. The movement brought a set of possible eyes or receptors to bear upon the exact point I occupied.
It saw me.
I knew that as certainly as I knew the human figures in the galleries belonged to my own species. The entity perceived my consciousness inside its facility. It registered that something had intruded into the collection it had maintained for ages beyond comprehension.
Then it returned to its work.
Its appendages resumed their precise interaction with the console. The sensory structure rotated away. A moment later, the collector transitioned to a position near the southern edge of the chamber.
It had noticed me and dismissed me as irrelevant.
That knowledge cut deeper than fear. I had trained for fifteen years under Bowen and practised projection for twenty-two. I had driven my body and mind to their limits and reached a place no living human had consciously witnessed.
To these entities, I was background noise. A minor disturbance that did not justify interrupting their maintenance.
The collectors continued working. One sank through the platform and disappeared into the floor. Another interfaced with three consoles at once, its shape dividing, duplicating or occupying several states simultaneously. The nearest transitioned across the chamber in movements that hurt to follow.
The tether began to pull.
My final projection was nearing its limit. Within perhaps two minutes, the separation would become unsustainable and the emergency recall would take control. I needed to leave whilst I could still direct the first part of my return.
I rose towards the ceiling. The platform and its brilliant consoles diminished beneath me. The collectors became smaller, their incomprehensible forms reduced to shifting structures of light and darkness.
None followed.
The entrance appeared above me, and I passed into the steep corridor leading back to the ring chamber. I moved faster now, driven by the tightening tether and the desperate need to reach my body before my heart or brain failed.
The ring chamber flashed past. I did not pause before the thirty cylinders or the sphere containing its formless tissue.
I raced upwards through the human galleries. Possible Victorian dress, eighteenth-century naval uniform, medieval clothing, Roman-looking armour, woven cloth and stone tools blurred past in reverse chronology. The children's faces vanished into the dark behind me.
I crossed the greater galleries with their hundreds of non-human bodies: crystalline figures, segmented exoskeletons, folded metallic wings and tentacled masses. The six four-armed beings appeared and disappeared as I shot through their chamber.
The command centre lay ahead, filled with its pulsing blue-green light. I passed through without stopping, crossed the living areas and storage rooms, and entered the docking chamber where three ancient vessels rested in their cradles.
The geometric doorway rushed towards me. I passed through its symbol-covered panels and emerged into the canyon, where walls of volcanic rock pressed close on either side. After the impossible spaces below, the natural confines felt almost comforting.
I followed the canyon's bends in reverse. The gap between its walls broadened from roughly 6 metres to 9. Then the canyon ended and I emerged over the barren floor of Challenger Deep.
An approximately 10,900-metre column of water lay above me. The tether pulled with increasing force. I stopped resisting and surrendered to the emergency recall.
My consciousness shot upwards through crushing darkness at a speed that would have destroyed my physical body. There were no fish, no drifting jellyfish and no distant sparks of bioluminescence, only black water pressing in from every side.
Three miles. Four. Five.
The pressure fell as I climbed, though my projected form could not feel it.
Six miles.
At last the darkness thinned. Faint sunlight penetrated from far above as the recall drew me towards the Endeavour Meridian.
At the end of the seven-mile approximation, my consciousness crossed the remaining horizontal distance and slammed into my physical body hard enough to drive the air from my lungs.
I gasped. My hands flew to my chest, where my heart hammered in irregular spasms. The stores formed around me: metal bulkheads, stacked crates and the familiar smells of machine oil, salt and damp overalls.
I remained slumped in hiding for five minutes, perhaps ten. My hands would not stop shaking. Each breath came as a shallow gasp that failed to satisfy my lungs. My pulse had to be above 120, as if I had sprinted across the deck instead of sitting motionless behind a row of crates.
The knowledge settled into my skull like a lead weight.
The ruins had shown that another intelligence had reached Earth's deepest ocean before us. The six preserved beings had proved that the facility belonged to a history we did not know. The galleries revealed that intelligent species from many worlds had been collected, classified and displayed. The human exhibits showed that our own kind had been harvested throughout prehistory and recorded civilisation.
And in the deepest chamber, the collectors were still alive.
One of them had perceived me. It had recognised my intrusion and judged me too insignificant to matter.
I could never unknow that. I could never again believe humanity was unobserved, or that our history belonged entirely to us. Somewhere beneath Challenger Deep, the collectors continued their methodical work.
I dragged air into my aching lungs and listened to the Endeavour Meridian's engines vibrate through the deck around me.
I alone knew the truth.
