The road climbed towards Cairn Gorm through boulder fields, scree and wind-scoured ground. Dark granite on both sides, split and weathered into shapes that looked sharp enough to shred a tyre if you left the road. I didn't plan on leaving it.
I'd studied environmental science at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Inverness. Graduated in May. Spent the summer applying for everything. Council jobs, Civil Service posts, a couple of research placements that probably went to postgraduates.
Cairngorm Atmospheric Monitoring Station was the first place that responded with an actual offer. Night monitoring technician. Atmospheric instruments. Contracted for 32 hours a week.
Pension and employment benefits after six months. Remote-site accommodation allowance because Aviemore was roughly an hour down the mountain in winter conditions. I took it. Didn't really think about what night monitoring technician meant in practical terms until I was already driving up.
Alone on an exposed plateau about 1,200 metres above sea level. No one around except whoever else drew the night shift. I thought it would be quiet. Good for keeping ahead of my student-loan deductions and general living costs.
Good for getting Civil Service and public-sector experience on my CV. The pass had my name printed beneath the Met Office logo. Callum Mercer. It felt official in a way my student card never had.
I touched it once while I was driving. Just to make sure it was still there.
The road grew steeper beyond the last public turn-off. Fewer signs. No barriers in some sections. Just snow poles and reflective marker posts roughly every 15 metres.
The sun was dropping behind the mountain, throwing long shadows across the granite. I passed a couple of cars heading down. Walkers or tourists, probably. Trying to get back to Aviemore before dark.
No one was heading up except me.
The cold sharpened as I climbed. I could feel the exertion in my chest, not badly, but enough to make me breathe harder. I cracked the window and cold mineral air poured in, carrying damp stone, peat and a faint trace of diesel from somewhere above.
The kind of air that caught in the back of your throat.
I'd been up there once before. A field trip during my second year. We'd visited the station for about two hours, looked at some carbon dioxide data, eaten lunch in the car park, then driven back down.
It had seemed interesting at the time. Clean, scientific, a little remote, but not in a way that bothered me.
That was during the day.
At dusk, it looked different.
The final stretch of road straightened and the gradient eased. The ground was darker there, peat-stained between exposed granite and patches of old snow. I passed a yellow sign warning of a rough road. The surface deteriorated immediately afterwards, patched where winter frost had split it.
Then I came over a rise and the station appeared.
It sat above the cloud filling the glens below. The white sheet stretched across the Highlands, hiding roads, woods and settlements. The sky above was clear, dark blue fading to black. A few early stars were already visible.

No landscaping. No trees. No attempt to make it look like anything other than what it was. A research station in the middle of nowhere.
No nearby lights.
No nearby anything.
I pulled into the car park and switched off the engine. Sat there for a minute. The silence felt heavy, just the wind and the tick of the cooling engine.
If something went wrong up there, help wasn't close.
I picked up the pass, clipped it to my jacket and got out. The cold hit me immediately. About 7 degrees Celsius, perhaps, but much colder in the wind.
I grabbed my bag from the back seat and walked towards the main building. My boots crunched over loose grit. The climb and the cold had left me mildly breathless. The main building had a metal door with a card reader beside it.
I tried my pass. The light turned green and the lock clicked.
Inside was warmer. Fluorescent lights, lino floors, the smell of old coffee and electronics.
A corridor stretched ahead with doors on both sides. Everything was labelled in block capitals. STORAGE. CALIBRATION LAB. OPERATIONS.
Fiona Hargreaves was waiting near the front desk.
I recognised her from the video interview. Mid-forties, dark hair pulled back tightly, sharp eyes. She wore practical layers, a fleece over a long-sleeved top, walking shoes and an identity card clipped to her belt.
She looked at me the way you'd look at a piece of equipment that had just been delivered.
"Callum Mercer," she said. Not a question.
"Yes. Hi."
She nodded once.
"Leave your bag here. I'll show you the site."
That was it. No welcome, no handshake, no small talk about the drive.
She turned and started walking. I left my bag by the desk and followed. She walked quickly and didn't look back to see whether I was keeping up. We went down the corridor, and she pointed at doors as we passed.
"Staff room. Toilet. That's the main server room. You won't need access yet."
She stopped at a door labelled MONITORING STATION and pushed it open.
"This is where you'll spend most of your shift."
The room was narrow. Desks ran along one wall, with computer monitors showing graphs and readouts. Rows of numbers updated in real time.
There were a couple of old office chairs and a whiteboard on the far wall covered in someone's handwriting. Dates, instrument codes and a few notes I couldn't read from the doorway.
"Four primary systems," Fiona said. "Carbon dioxide, methane, surface ozone and solar radiation. You'll check each one every hour. Log the readings and flag anything outside normal variance."
She tapped one of the monitors.
"The training documents are here. You'll go through them with Euan."
"All right."
She moved on. Didn't wait for questions.
We went through three more rooms. A calibration laboratory with calibration-gas cylinders lined up against the wall. A workshop with workbenches and spare parts in labelled bins. A storage cupboard that smelt of dust and old plastic.
Fiona explained each space in the same flat tone. Procedural. Like she was reading from a checklist.
She didn't ask whether I had questions. Didn't ask whether I was keeping up. Didn't ask anything about me at all.
I started to get the sense that I was replaceable. That she'd done this walk a dozen times with a dozen other technicians and I wasn't any different.
We ended up back near the monitoring station. Fiona checked her watch.
"Euan's doing the evening calibration. He'll meet you in ten minutes."
She looked at me.
"You have questions now. Ask them."
I had about fifty. I chose the most practical one.
"What's the accommodation situation?"
"Staff block, about 180 metres south. You'll get a key tonight. Shared kitchen, private room, linen provided, coin-operated laundry."
She paused.
"Nearest supermarkets are in Aviemore. You'll want to stock up before your first shift."
"Got it."
"Anything else?"
I nearly said no. Then I thought about the climb, the isolation and the weather.
"What happens if there's an emergency?"
Fiona's expression didn't change.
"Medical?"
"Or anything."
"Radio in the monitoring station. Contacts are posted. The ranger base at Glenmore is roughly forty minutes away in poor conditions. Coastguard helicopter evacuation coordinated with Police Scotland and mountain rescue if it's serious."
She said it as if she were describing a routine procedure.
"Don't let it be serious."
"Right."
She checked her watch again.
"Euan should be finished now."
We walked back towards the calibration laboratory. The corridor felt colder than it had before.
Or perhaps I was only noticing it more.
Euan Fraser was standing beside one of the calibration-gas cylinders when we arrived. Tall, solidly built, sandy hair cut short. He wore work overalls and had a tool belt hanging loosely at his hips.
He looked up when we entered, nodded to Fiona, then turned his attention to me.
"New night technician," Fiona said.
"Right."
Euan wiped his hands on a rag and came over. His handshake was firm.
"Euan Fraser. I'll be showing you the equipment."
Fiona left without saying anything else. The door clicked shut behind her.
Euan watched her go, then looked at me.
"Is she always like that?" I asked.
"I don't know. Just met her."
I realised what he'd done a second late. He gave the faintest smile.
"Yes," he said. "She's always like that."
He tossed the rag onto the workbench.
"Come on. I'll show you the intake lines first."
He led me outside through a side door. The cold struck harder this time. The wind had picked up.
We crossed the exposed ground towards a cluster of metal towers and sensors. Euan moved at a steady pace, neither fast nor slow. Like he'd made that walk a thousand times.
"Main intake is here," he said, pointing to a tube running up the side of a three-metre mast. "Pulls air samples every thirty seconds. Feeds into the analyser inside. You'll check the flow rate every hour. Make sure nothing's blocked."
I nodded. My breath clouded in the air.
Euan showed me three more intake points, explained the calibration schedule and pointed out which valves controlled which lines. He spoke in blunt, practical sentences. Highland accent, no wasted words.
"You'll get the full run-through tomorrow," he said as we went back inside. "Tonight's just induction. Get familiar with the layout. Read the training documents. Don't touch anything unless I'm with you."
"Understood."
We returned to the monitoring station. Euan pulled up a chair and began taking me through the systems on the main computer. He clicked between screens, showing me where the logs were kept, how to flag anomalies and what normal variance looked like for each instrument.
I watched and tried to take notes. My head felt a little foggy. The drive, the cold and the long day, probably.
"The plateau takes some getting used to," Euan said without looking away from the screen. "Cold, exposure, bad sleep. You'll be tired for the first week. Drink more water than you think you need."
"All right."
He brought up a checklist.
"This is your hourly routine. Twelve steps. Don't skip any of them."
I scanned the list. It seemed straightforward. Check readings, log data, inspect intake lines, verify calibration status, report anomalies.
"What counts as an anomaly?"
"Anything outside the flagged range. It'll be highlighted in red if it happens."
Euan leant back in the chair.
"Hasn't happened on my shift in six months. System's stable."
"Good to know."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"The mountain makes people careless," he said. "You get used to the routine and stop paying attention. That's when things go wrong."
I assumed he meant the normal risks. Exposure, fatigue from working nights, perhaps a twisted ankle among the boulders if you didn't watch your footing.
"I'll be careful," I said.
Euan nodded slowly. He didn't look convinced.
We went through the rest of the checklist. He showed me the radio, the emergency contacts and the backup logs for use if the computer system went down.
Everything was organised. Procedural. The sort of job where you followed the steps and nothing unexpected happened.
Except Euan kept saying things that didn't quite fit.
"Don't go outside after midnight unless it's on the checklist. If you hear anything unusual, radio it in. Don't investigate on your own. Stay on the marked routes between buildings."
I nodded along. Assumed it was standard safety protocol for working alone at night in a remote place.
But the way he said it felt wrong.
Too specific. Too careful.
"Is there something I should know about?" I asked.
Euan closed the training document.
"Just follow the checklist. That's the job."
"Right, but-"
"You'll get used to the routine."
He stood.
"Fiona wants everything by the book. No improvising, no shortcuts. Do your twelve steps every hour and you'll be fine."
That wasn't really an answer.
Euan took a ring of keys from the desk drawer and handed it to me.
"Staff block, room seven. Your name's on the door."
He checked his watch.
"I'm here until 23:00. If you need anything before then, come and find me."
"Thanks."
He left.
I sat in the monitoring station with the hum of the computers and the numbers updating on the screens. The room felt too quiet, too isolated.
I opened the checklist again and read through it. Twelve steps. Nothing complicated. Nothing that explained why Euan had been so careful with his warnings.
Through the window, I could see the last daylight fading, the sky changing from blue to black. The cloud below was turning grey.
No nearby lights. No easy help.
I touched my security pass again. Still there.
The mountain made people careless, Euan had said. But with Fiona's cold efficiency, Euan's careful warnings and rules that felt like more than safety protocol, it seemed as though carelessness wasn't the real problem.
It seemed as though there were other rules too.
Rules nobody had explained yet.
Fiona found me in the monitoring station at about 21:00 that first night. I'd been sitting there for perhaps an hour, watching the numbers update and touching nothing.
She carried an A4 laminated sheet. The plastic coating was thick, its corners worn smooth. She set it on the desk beside the keyboard.
"Read this," she said. "Initial each line."
I drew it closer.
The title at the top read NIGHT OPERATIONS PROTOCOL in block capitals. Beneath it were twelve numbered items. A narrow column on the right had space for initials and a date.
I started reading.
The first few seemed normal enough. Log readings every hour on the hour. Report analyser errors immediately. Maintain radio contact with the Met Office operations centre in Aberdeen at 06:00.
Then I reached number four.
Lock the north door at sunset. Do not open until full daylight.
I paused and looked up at Fiona. She was watching me, her expression flat.
"Which one's the north door?" I asked.
"Side exit beyond the calibration lab. Euan showed you earlier."
He had. I remembered the heavy steel door with the push bar, opening onto the north side of the building where the wind had been stronger.
"All right," I said.
I kept reading.
If the seismic alarm chirps twice in succession, shut down the ozone pump immediately. Do not wait for confirmation. Data loss is acceptable.
That bothered me. The whole point of the station was continuous data collection. Shutting down equipment because of an alarm pattern seemed backwards.
Number six was worse.
Between 01:10 and 01:26, do not access camera feeds. Leave monitoring screen on primary data display only.
I read it twice.
Sixteen minutes. Specific to the minute.
"We have cameras?" I asked.
"Exterior only. Four angles. Euan will show you tomorrow."
"Why can't I-"
"Keep reading."
I looked down again.
If the radio receives a low-frequency hum on any channel, remove the headset immediately. Log the time. Do not attempt to identify the source.
Do not enter the server room between 02:00 and 04:00 unless accompanied by senior staff.
If you hear knocking, verify wind speed on the anemometer before responding.
The rest were more conventional. Equipment checks, calibration schedules, emergency contacts.
But those middle rules sat badly in my chest. They didn't sound like safety procedures. They sounded like superstitions someone had turned into policy.
I looked up again.
Fiona hadn't moved.
"What's this for?" I asked.
"Operational continuity."
"That's not really an answer."
Her jaw tightened slightly.
"It's the answer you're getting. Initial each line."
I had a pen in my jacket pocket. I took it out and clicked it twice. My hand hovered over the first line.
"What happens if I don't?"
Fiona's expression didn't change.
"Then you don't work nights."
"My contract says night monitoring technician."
"If you can't follow night protocols, you're not qualified for the position. Simple as that."
She wasn't bluffing. I could tell from the way she stood, arms loose at her sides, weight even. She'd had this conversation before. Probably more than once.
I initialled the first line. Then the second. Kept going down the page, my handwriting growing smaller when I reached the strange ones.
When I finished, I wrote the date at the bottom: 7 October 2022.
Then I slid the sheet back to her.
She picked it up, checked every initial, then took a binder from beneath her arm that I hadn't noticed she was carrying. She slipped the protocol into a plastic sleeve and added it to a stack of similar sheets.
I caught glimpses of other names and other dates. Some recent, some much older. The ink on a few had begun to fade.
"Euan will countersign tomorrow," she said. "You're cleared for solo shifts from Sunday."
"All right."
She tucked the binder under her arm.
"If you have questions, ask him. Not me. I'm off-site until Wednesday."
She left before I could say anything else. Her footsteps echoed along the corridor, then the front door opened and closed.
A minute later, I heard an engine start outside. Tyres crunched over gravel as she drove away.
I sat looking at the empty doorway.
Euan appeared perhaps ten minutes later. He had a clipboard in one hand and a coffee mug in the other. Black coffee, no steam. It had probably been sitting somewhere for a while.
"She give you the protocol sheet?" he asked.
"Yes."
"You initial it?"
"Yes."
He nodded, set down the clipboard and leant against the desk.
"Good."
I waited for him to say more. He didn't. He only sipped his coffee and looked at the monitors.
"Those rules aren't standard," I said.
"No."
"So what are they?"
Euan scratched the side of his jaw. He had perhaps two days' stubble, pale against his skin.
"They keep the place running."
"That's what Fiona said."
"Because it's true."
I turned in the chair to face him properly.
"The camera rule. The north door. That's not about equipment safety."
"Didn't say it was."
"Then what is it about?"
He looked at me for a long moment. His grey eyes were tired. Not as though he needed sleep. As though he'd been tired for months and had grown accustomed to it.
"Do you want the job or not?" he asked.
"I want to know what I signed."
"You signed a protocol sheet. The same one everyone signs."
He straightened and picked up his clipboard.
"Follow it and you'll be fine. Don't, and you won't. That's it."
He walked out before I could press him further.
That was my first night.
The next two weeks settled into a pattern quickly. I'd arrive at the station at about 21:00, check in with Euan and take over the monitoring room by 22:00. He'd leave by 23:00.
After that, it was just me and the hum of the computers until Fiona or Euan arrived at 06:30 the following morning.
The work itself wasn't complicated. Every hour I'd run through the checklist, the ordinary one Euan had shown me on the first day, not the laminated protocol, though I kept that taped to the wall beside the desk where I could see it.
I'd check the carbon dioxide readings, make sure the analyser was drawing samples, record the figures in the digital system and in the physical backup binders, then check methane, ozone and solar radiation. At night, the solar figures were only zeroes or ambient background.
Changing the filters was easy. They were kept in the calibration laboratory in sealed plastic bags on a metal shelf. I'd replace one every seventy-two hours, write the date on the old filter with a permanent marker and drop it in the waste bin. The new one slid into the housing with a quarter-turn and a click.
Logging the calibration gas took longer. There were three cylinders: standard reference, high range and zero air. I had to record the pressure of each one during every shift, compare it with the previous reading and calculate the difference.
Euan said it helped identify leaks before they corrupted the data. That made sense.
I didn't mind the maths.
Scraping ice from the intake was the worst part. It didn't happen every night, but when it did I had to put on a heavier jacket, gloves and a head torch, then go outside to the main mast.
The wind up there cut through everything.
I'd use a plastic scraper, taking care not to damage the mesh screen, and clear whatever had accumulated. Sometimes it was only a thin glaze. Sometimes a lump several centimetres thick.
The air on the plateau was cold enough for my breath to freeze on the scarf I'd started wearing.
I'd crouch in the darkness, scraping, my fingers going numb even through my gloves, and think about how I'd once imagined fieldwork differently. More walking, perhaps. Less standing among granite and old snow at 1,200 metres, trying not to let ice break off into an intake tube.
But it was fine.
Honest work. I didn't mind it.
Checking the analyser diagnostics mostly meant scrolling through screens and making sure nothing was flagged in red. Flow rate, sample temperature, optical bench status, pump cycles.
All of it updated in real time. If anything looked wrong, I was supposed to radio Euan first, then Fiona if he didn't answer.
Nothing ever looked wrong. The system ran cleanly.
Calling the operations centre at sunrise was the easiest part. I'd pick up the telephone in the monitoring room at exactly 06:00, dial the number on the contact sheet and wait for someone to answer.
Usually it was a man called Martin. Sometimes a woman called Sarah.
I'd confirm my name, the date and that the night had passed without incident. They'd record it at their end. The entire call took perhaps forty-five seconds.
After that, I'd wait for Euan or Fiona to arrive, hand over the logs and return to the staff block for eight hours' sleep.
That was the cycle, over and over.
Euan kept giving me the same answer whenever I asked about the protocol.
"Checklist's older than the building," he'd say, as though that explained anything.
He said it at least four times during those two weeks. Always the same words. As if he'd memorised them.
Fiona came by twice during my shifts. Both times she walked through the station, checked the logs and asked whether I'd followed the protocols.
I said yes.
She initialled something on her own clipboard and left. She didn't ask for details. Didn't check the cameras or the north door or whether I'd really kept my eyes away during that sixteen-minute interval.
She took my word and moved on.
It felt less like supervision and more like compliance training. As if she were ticking a box that said a new employee had been instructed in site-specific procedures and didn't care whether those procedures made sense.
I was stuck with rules nobody would explain.
And the thing was, I'd followed all of them.
Locked the north door every night at sunset. Didn't touch it again until daylight entered through the eastern windows.
Kept my eyes on the data display between 01:10 and 01:26, even though I wanted to open the camera feeds and see what I wasn't meant to see.
Twice, the radio picked up something low and buzzing. Both times I pulled off the headset quickly enough to hear only a few seconds and logged the time.
I didn't know why I was doing any of it.
But I did it anyway.
The seismic monitor stood on the left side of my desk, a grey metal box with a digital display and two indicator lights.
I'd checked it during every hourly round for two weeks and nothing had ever changed. The figures stayed flat. The lights stayed green.
Just before 01:00 on 22 October 2022, that changed.
I was reading through the carbon dioxide log, comparing the current readings with the previous night's, when the desk jolted beneath my forearms.
Sharp and quick. The sort of movement that made my coffee mug slide a few centimetres to the right and sent my pen rolling towards the edge.
The seismic monitor flashed red and emitted two chirps in quick succession.
Chirp.
Chirp.
My first instinct was to lean forwards and check the trace display, see what the actual magnitude was. Perhaps open the British Geological Survey seismic feed and confirm the location. Standard procedure for a seismic event.
I'd done earthquake drills at university. Knew the protocols. Could probably have recited the response checklist from memory.
Then I remembered the laminated sheet taped to the wall. Item five.
Shut down the ozone pump immediately if the seismic alarm chirps twice in succession. Do not wait for confirmation. Data loss is acceptable.
I shoved my chair back and stood so quickly that it rolled into the filing cabinet behind me with a dull clang.
The ozone-pump controls were in the calibration laboratory, which meant going through the corridor and past the supply cupboard. My boots sounded loud on the lino.
The overhead lights hummed as they always did, but they seemed louder now. Or perhaps I was listening differently.
The calibration laboratory smelt of machine oil and the faint, clean odour around the gas fittings. The ozone pump stood on the far workbench, a box-shaped unit with a digital readout and three toggle switches.
A green light on the front panel showed it was running.
I pushed the main power switch down. The light went out.
The hum I hadn't consciously noticed until that moment stopped.
I stood there for perhaps ten seconds, breathing harder than the short walk justified, staring at the silent pump.
Then I returned to the monitoring station.
The seismic monitor had stopped flashing. Both lights were green again. The trace on the display showed a single sharp spike followed by nothing.
The entire thing had lasted perhaps fifteen seconds.
I sat and logged it. Time, duration, action taken. My handwriting looked tight and small in the binder.
I wrote OZONE PUMP OFFLINE AS PER PROTOCOL and underlined it once.
That was when I noticed the quiet.
The station always made noise. Computer fans, the soft whirr of the filtration system, an occasional click as a relay changed over. Background sounds you stopped hearing after the first few nights.
But with the ozone pump off, something had shifted. The remaining sounds felt too distinct. Too sharp. Every small mechanical click stood out.
I didn't like it.
I opened the primary data display and checked the other instruments. The carbon dioxide analyser was still drawing samples every thirty seconds. Methane readings were stable. Surface ozone had been approximately 30 parts per billion before the pump shut down. Solar radiation was flat, obviously, because it was the middle of the night.
Everything was operating normally except the system I'd just killed.
I looked at the clock.

The window behind the desk faced north.
I'd spent two weeks at that desk and had never paid much attention to what lay outside. It was always black. No moon on most nights, no lights from towns or roads, only wind-scoured ground, boulders and old snow stretching into nothing.
But when I glanced up from the monitor, there was a light out there.
A single point. Pale white, perhaps with a faint yellow cast.
It drifted in a slow loop roughly 45 metres from the building, close to where the north door opened onto the access route.
Its movement was smooth and deliberate. It circled in a way that looked careful, methodical. Exactly like someone walking a perimeter with a head torch.
I stood and moved closer to the window. The glass was cold as I leant towards it.
The light kept moving.
It looped left, then returned to the right. A steady pace.
I couldn't see anyone attached to it.
No silhouette. No body interrupting the stars behind it. Only the light itself, hovering about 1.7 metres above the ground.
I thought it might be a ranger carrying out an inspection. Except the barrier on the access road was locked after 22:00, and I hadn't heard a vehicle approach.
The sound of tyres on gravel carried clearly in the night air. I would have noticed.
I moved to the side window, which offered a better view of the car park. My four-wheel-drive utility vehicle stood alone beneath the exterior floodlight.
No other vehicles. Not one.
When I looked back towards the north side, the light was still there.
Still circling.
My chest tightened.
I made myself breathe slowly and step away from the window.
The radio headset lay on the desk beside the binder. Standard procedure was to monitor the Cairngorms National Park Authority ranger service operational channels during a shift, in case of emergency traffic or a need for coordination.
I hadn't put it on that night because the first two weeks had been silent, and I'd grown lazy about it.
I picked it up and settled it over my ears, adjusting the foam earpieces. Its weight felt familiar.
I switched to the primary ranger-service channel.
Static at first. Normal.
Then, beneath it, a low hum began to build.
It wasn't like interference. It didn't sound electrical.
It was smooth and constant, increasing in volume until it filled both ears. The vibration made my jaw ache.
I tore off the headset and dropped it on the desk.
My hands were trembling slightly. I clenched my right fist, opened it, then clenched it again.
The laminated protocol was there on the wall.
Item seven. Remove headset immediately if radio receives a low-frequency hum on any channel. Log the time. Do not attempt to identify the source.
I seized the pen and wrote in the binder's margin.

The computer monitors glowed steadily in front of me. Four screens in total. Three showed instrument readouts. The fourth was meant to display the camera feeds, but I'd left it on the primary data display since starting.
Euan had mentioned the cameras on my second day but had never actually shown me how to access them.
Item six. Do not access camera feeds between 01:10 and 01:26.
I looked at the clock.
01:07.
Three minutes until the restricted interval began. Sixteen minutes in total.
I had an overwhelming urge to open the camera feeds at once, before the interval started, and see what the north-facing camera showed. See whether the light appeared on the feed.
See whether it would prove the thing was real, or prove it was something else, or simply prove anything at all.
Instead, I clasped my hands together on the desk and stared at the carbon dioxide figures.
They updated every thirty seconds. I watched them rise from 421.3 to 421.4, then fall to 421.3 again.
Normal variance. Completely normal.
01:09. One minute left.
I kept my eyes on the figures.
When the clock reached 01:10, my body tightened without meaning to.
I didn't look at the fourth monitor. Didn't touch the mouse.
I only sat there, watching carbon dioxide readings update while the station hummed around me and something carrying a light circled outside the north door.
Those sixteen minutes were the longest of my life.
I counted instrument updates. Watched the methane display. Read the same three emergency contact numbers on the wall six times in succession. Checked the pressure logs for the calibration-gas cylinders even though I'd already done so at midnight.
At exactly 01:26, I allowed myself to look towards the window again.
The light had gone.
Only darkness remained. Empty ground and stars.
I sat back in my chair and pressed both palms to my face. My skin felt cold.
The rest of the shift was quiet.
I completed the hourly checklist at 02:00, then again at 03:00, 04:00 and 05:00.
Everything was normal except that the ozone pump remained offline. I didn't switch it on again. The protocol said nothing about restarting it, so I left it alone.
At 06:15, I heard tyres on gravel outside.
Euan came through the front door at 06:23, carrying his usual clipboard and a flask that probably held coffee which had gone lukewarm an hour before.
He looked the same as ever. Work overalls, tool belt, sandy hair disordered by the wind.
"Morning," he said.
"Morning."
He put down his clipboard and reached for the binder without sitting. It was our standard handover. He'd read the log, I'd give him a verbal summary, he'd countersign it and I'd return to the staff block for eight hours' sleep.
I watched his eyes move down the page.
Watched them stop at the seismic entry.
Then the ozone-pump note.
Then the radio hum.
His entire body stiffened.
Not as though he'd been startled. It was controlled. As if he were forcing himself not to react and the effort took everything he had.
He continued reading without looking up. When he reached the bottom of the page, he turned it over, although I hadn't written on the back, then turned it back again.
"You saw a light," he said.
His voice was flat.
"Yes. Near the north door, at about 01:05."
"And the radio?"
"A hum on the ranger-service channel. At 01:06."
Euan placed the binder carefully on the desk and looked at me. His grey eyes had that tired quality again, but there was something else underneath it now. Something taut.
"The light wasn't a person," he said.
I waited.
"And the hum wasn't the aerial."
"All right," I said. "What were they?"
Euan scratched his jaw. Looked at the binder. Looked at the dark window behind me.
"You're probably just tired," he said. "First few weeks up here can play tricks on you. Cold, poor sleep, long shifts. Make you see things that aren't there. Hear things."
I stared at him.
"I wrote it in the log."
"I know."
"You told me to log anything unusual."
"I know," Euan said again.
He picked up his pen and countersigned the bottom of the page. His signature looked normal. Steady.
"You did well. Followed protocol. That's what matters."
He closed the binder and returned it to its place on the shelf.
"Get some sleep," he said. "I'll deal with the pump."
I didn't move.
Euan watched me for a long moment, then breathed out through his nose and sat in the other chair.
"It's nothing you need to worry about," he said, more quietly now. "It's part of the job. You follow the protocols and you're fine. That's all there is to it."
"What was the light?"
"Go to sleep, Callum."
He said nothing else. He turned to the computer and began opening the morning diagnostics.
I stood there for a few more seconds, then took my jacket from the back of the chair and walked out.
The sky was beginning to brighten. Pale grey along the horizon, with stars still visible overhead. The air smelt of damp stone, peat and cold metal.
I walked towards the staff accommodation block and didn't look back at the north side.
Not once.
Euan didn't go outside after signing the log. That bothered me.
Instead, he inspected the perimeter from inside, starting with the north door.
I followed him down the corridor beyond the calibration laboratory because I didn't know what else to do, and he hadn't told me to stay behind.
The door was the same heavy steel one with the push bar. Industrial grey paint had chipped around the handle.
Euan stopped about sixty centimetres from it and studied the frame.
The top corner first. Then the hinges. Then the bottom seal where it met the floor.
He crouched and ran his hand along the threshold without touching the door itself.
"Looking for something?" I asked.
"Checking the seal," he said.
That was not what he was doing. I had checked door seals before, plenty of times, and you did not look at hinges for that. You checked the weather stripping.
You looked for gaps where light came through. Euan was studying the metal as if he expected it to be bent, scratched or forced. As if something had tried to get in.
He stood and tested the deadbolt, turning it left and then right. It clicked solidly both times. Then he moved to the small rectangular window beside the door, the one with wire mesh inside the glass, and leaned close to inspect the edges of the frame.
"It's locked," I said.
"I know."
"Has it been unlocked before?"
Euan did not answer. He moved to the next window, the one facing the north intake mast, and carried out the same inspection: frame, glass, latch. His shoulders stayed tense the whole time, drawn slightly higher than normal.
I noticed because mine were doing the same thing.
We walked the rest of the perimeter. He checked every window on the north and east sides. He did not touch the south or west ones, which faced the access road and the staff accommodation block.
Only the windows looking out across the boulder fields, dark granite and scree, towards the slope dropping into the cloud that filled the glens below.
When we returned to the monitoring room, Euan picked up his clipboard and flask. He looked at me for a second, then at the binder lying open on the desk.
"You did well," he said.
"Right."
"I mean it. You followed the protocol. That's the part that matters."
I wanted to ask what would have happened if I had not, but his expression told me not to push.
He left through the front door at 06:43. I heard his four-wheel-drive utility vehicle start and pull on to the restricted access road. Then I was alone in the building, with every light burning and the sun beginning to rise outside.
I did not sleep well that day.
Fiona arrived at about 15:00. I was not expecting her. She had said she would be off-site until Wednesday, and it was only Monday.
I was in the calibration laboratory changing a filter on the methane line when I heard the front door open. Her footsteps came steadily along the corridor, and she appeared in the doorway carrying a small aluminium case. Her usual Met Office security pass was clipped to her belt.
"Afternoon," she said.
"Hi."
She put the case on the workbench beside the calibration-gas cylinders and released the catches. Inside, packed in foam, were three small glass vials filled with clear liquid. They were probably calibration standards. I had seen similar equipment in the laboratories at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Inverness.
"I'm running a sulphur dioxide check," she said. "It won't take long."
"All right."
I finished tightening the methane filter and stepped back to give her room.
She took a pair of nitrile gloves from a box on the shelf and began work. Every movement was efficient. She removed the first vial, broke the seal and pipetted a sample into a small analyser unit tucked behind the ozone pump, one I had not noticed before.
I leant against the workbench and watched. She did not tell me to leave, so I assumed I was allowed to stay.
After perhaps five minutes, she said, "How was your shift last night?"
Her voice was too light and casual. It did not match her usual manner, which was clipped, direct and free of small talk.
"Fine," I said.
"Anything unusual?"
"Seismic event. I shut down the ozone pump."
"I saw the log."
She pipetted a sample from the second vial.
"Euan countersigned it."
"Yes."
She kept working without looking up.
"You followed the checklist exactly?"
"Yes."
"All of it?"
I did not answer at once. My chest tightened, and I kept my hands loose at my sides so she would not see me tense.
"All of it," I said.
Fiona put down the pipette and finally looked at me. Her brown eyes were sharp and unreadable.
"You didn't look at the sky camera between 01:10 and 01:26?"
There it was.
I held her gaze without blinking.
"No. Not even for a second."
She watched me for several more seconds, and I knew she was testing me. She was not checking a fact. She wanted to see whether I would confess, whether I would lie, or perhaps simply how I reacted under pressure.
At 01:08, my hand had been resting on the mouse, the cursor hovering over the camera icon. I had wanted so badly to see what was outside that my fingers had begun to shake. But I had not clicked it. I had locked my hands together and watched the carbon dioxide readings instead.
Still, the fact that she had asked meant something.
"Good," Fiona said.
She turned back to the analyser.
"That's good."
She said nothing else. She finished the calibration, packed away the vials, closed the case and left at 15:32 without another word.
I remained in the calibration laboratory for a while, staring at the ozone pump and thinking about the way she had phrased the question.
Not, "Did you access the camera feed?"
Not, "Did you see anything unusual on the monitors?"
She had asked about the sky camera specifically, and she had named the exact sixteen-minute interval.
The lie did not help. I had thought it might. I thought that if I kept my head down, followed the rules and did not ask too many questions, everything would settle. I would become part of the routine. Another name in Fiona's binder. Another technician who initialled the protocol sheet, kept the instruments running and caused no trouble.
That was not what happened.
My next shift began at 21:00 on 23 October 2022. Euan was in the monitoring room, updating the whiteboard with new instrument codes. He nodded when I entered, handed me the clipboard containing the evening summary and told me the ozone pump was back online.
He had restarted it that morning after completing a full diagnostic. There was no damage and there were no irregularities.
"Good to go," he said.
"Right."
He left at 22:45. I completed the 23:00 checklist, logged everything and settled down with a flask of coffee that was already turning lukewarm.
The night was clear and windless. The stillness made every small noise inside the station distinct: the hum of the servers, the faint click of an analyser drawing a sample, the occasional creak of metal contracting as the temperature fell.
I kept watching the clock. Midnight passed. Then 00:30. Then 01:00.
At 01:04, I closed the camera-feed tab on the fourth monitor. I did not need to look at it. The protocol said not to access it between 01:10 and 01:26, and I was not going to. I moved the cursor away and opened the methane log instead.
At 01:12, the sky-camera icon flashed.
Not the whole tab. I had closed the tab. The icon itself, in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, began blinking white.
A slow pulse.
On. Off. On. Off.
I stared at it. I had not opened anything. The monitor displayed methane data, carbon dioxide trends and a flat solar-radiation trace. The camera feed was closed. I was certain of it. I had clicked the X myself eight minutes earlier.
The icon kept blinking.
My hand moved to the mouse. I did not make a decision. I simply did it.
I moved the cursor to the taskbar and clicked once.
The feed opened full-screen.
The picture was black and white, with harsh contrast. The timestamp in the corner read 01:12:18. I could see the roofline of the main station from above, with the aerial mast rising into the right-hand side of the frame and its guy wires barely visible against the sky.
Stars filled the image, bright and sharp in the clear Highland air.
Behind the buildings, about 27 metres beyond the north side, something stood upright.
It was white. Brilliant white. Flat and vertical, like a sheet or a screen, but far too large. It must have been about 4.5 metres tall, perhaps more.
It did not move or sway. It simply stood there against the dark granite and patches of old snow, perfectly still and too close to be cloud.
I leant towards the screen.
A horizontal black slit appeared in the white shape. It opened slowly, widening to nearly a metre, then closed again.
It did not look like a mouth. It looked like a seam. Like something folding.
My throat went dry.
The video froze while the timestamp continued to advance: 01:12:31, 01:12:32.
The image itself remained locked in place, the white form caught with its seam half open. The stars did not move. The aerial mast did not sway.
Then the seismic monitor chirped twice in rapid succession.
I looked at it.
The trace was completely flat. There was no spike and no movement. The indicator lights were green and the figures remained steady. Nothing was happening.
But the alarm continued.
It sounded wrong. The pitch was too low, stretched out like a recording played at half speed. The chirps blurred into a hum that made my teeth ache.
I could not move. I could not reach for the protocol sheet or stand. I could do nothing except sit there, staring at the frozen camera image and listening to an alarm that should not have been sounding.
I had followed every rule I knew. I had logged the readings, shut down equipment when instructed and initialled the checklist.
None of it mattered, because this was not a problem I could solve with technical skill. It was something else.
I closed the camera feed.
The frozen image disappeared and the fourth monitor returned to the primary data display. My hands were shaking again. I clenched one fist, opened it, then did the same with the other.
The image had frozen while the timestamp continued. Network lag did not do that. That happened when something interrupted the feed on the hardware side.
I thought I could fix it. It was probably a power fault or a loose connection. I had seen systems freeze during university fieldwork. You cycled the power, checked the breakers and restarted everything in sequence. Standard fault-finding.
I opened the camera-control programme and selected the restart icon.
The screen went black for three seconds. When it returned, an error appeared in white text.
Unable to initialise feed. Check hardware connection.
Fine.
I stood and walked along the corridor towards the server room. The breaker panel was fixed to the wall outside the door. I opened its metal cover and scanned the rows of switches.
Each carried a label written in faded permanent marker.
Main lights. Ventilation. Analyser bank. Camera array.
I switched the camera breaker off, counted to five and turned it back on. It clicked firmly in both directions.
That was when the lights in the monitoring room dimmed.
They did not flicker. They dimmed, as though someone had turned a control halfway down.
I looked along the corridor. The monitoring room was perhaps sixty per cent as bright as it had been ten seconds earlier, but the corridor lights remained at full strength. The same fluorescent white as always.
I returned and stood in the doorway. The overhead panels were definitely dimmer. By comparison, the computer screens appeared brighter, casting long shadows across the desk and floor.
I glanced back at the corridor.
Still bright.
The station had divided itself into two different nights.
I stepped into the monitoring room. The air was colder, not by much, perhaps two or three degrees, but enough for me to feel it across my face and hands.
The radio switched itself on.
There was no click and no burst of static. There was only the hum, rising from nothing to fill the room in about four seconds.
It was low and thick, the sort of sound you felt in your chest before you heard it with your ears.
I did not touch the headset. It was still on the desk where I had left it. This time, however, the hum came through the radio's speaker rather than the headphones. It was loud enough to drown out the computer fans.
I stood there trying to think.
The protocol said to remove the headset if it emitted a low hum. It did not say what to do if the radio switched itself on.
Then I heard a second sound beneath the hum.
It was quieter, but close. A rhythm matching my own breathing.
In. Out. In. Out.
It aligned with each breath as if something were pacing me through the wall.
I held my breath.
The sound continued.
In. Out. Steady.
I exhaled slowly, but the rhythm did not change. It had not been following me.
I had been following it.
My jaw ached. I realised I was clenching my teeth hard enough to tighten the muscles in my neck. I forced myself to relax, and the ache spread into my shoulders.
The hum grew louder.
I looked at the clock.
01:17. Nine minutes left.
The handle of the north door turned.
Only a fraction, perhaps half a centimetre of movement. Then it stopped.
I stared at it from across the room. The door was about six metres away, beyond the calibration laboratory, but I could see the handle clearly. Brushed steel, slightly worn where hands gripped it.
It turned again.
Slowly. Deliberately.
Another fraction, then it stopped.
I backed away. Three steps. Four. My shoulders struck the filing cabinet behind the desk.
I kept watching the corridor. The handle did not move again, but I did not trust it.
I sat on the floor with my back against the cabinet and my legs stretched in front of me. The linoleum was cold through my trousers. I drew up my knees and wrapped my arms around them.
The hum continued. The breathing continued. The lights remained dim.
I watched the clock.
01:18. 01:19.
The numbers changed each minute with a tiny flicker in the leftmost digit. I counted them.
Seven more.
At 01:23, my hands began shaking again. I pressed them flat against my knees and held them there.
01:24.
01:25.
01:26.
The hum stopped.
It did not fade. It stopped as though someone had cut a wire.
The silence hit me hard enough that my ears rang while they adjusted.
The monitoring-room lights returned to full brightness. I blinked in the sudden glare. The corridor looked normal again. The temperature and the light were the same on both sides of the doorway.
The building had stitched itself back together.
I stayed on the floor for another thirty seconds, perhaps a full minute. Then I rose slowly, using the filing cabinet to pull myself upright.
The protocol did not say anything about the ozone pump once the restricted interval ended. The two chirps had sounded, so I had shut it down during the alarm. Euan had restarted it the following morning after the previous incident. I decided I should restart it now.
I walked to the calibration laboratory. My legs felt unsteady, but they held.
The ozone pump stood on the far workbench, just as before. I raised the main power switch. The green light came on and the pump began to hum. Everything appeared normal.
I returned to the monitoring room and opened the ozone readout on the second screen.
Zero.
I stared at it. The figure should have begun climbing within fifteen or twenty seconds. Ozone concentration at the station usually sat at approximately 30 parts per billion at night. It was not high, but it was certainly not zero.
I waited another minute.
Still zero.
I checked the pump status remotely. Every indicator was green. The flow rate was normal. There were no error codes.
The reading remained fixed at zero.
I opened the maintenance log and wrote:
Ozone pump restarted 01:29. Reading zero. Pump status normal. Possible sensor fault.
I underlined "possible sensor fault" once, then closed the log.
I could not explain it. Not in any way that made sense.
I completed the 02:00 checklist, then the ones at 03:00, 04:00 and 05:00. I did not approach the north door. I did not look through the north-facing window. I kept my eyes on the instruments, the logs and the clock.
At 06:12, the sky beyond the eastern window began turning grey. It was not sunrise yet, only its first edge.
I put on my jacket and went outside through the front door.
The air was cold and still. There was no wind. Gravel crunched beneath my boots as I walked around the north side of the station, past the three-metre intake mast and the guy wires.
There was a line on the ground.
Pale mineral dust, almost white.
It ran in a perfectly straight line away from the north door, stretching for about 35 metres across dark granite, scree and peat-stained ground.
I followed it.
The line did not waver or curve. It was a clean stripe about five centimetres wide, as if someone had drawn it with a ruler and a stick of chalk.
At the end lay a bird.
A ptarmigan. Its mottled grey and white feathers blended with the stones and old snow. It lay on its side with its wings folded against its body.
I crouched beside it.
Its eyes were missing.
They had not been torn out or pecked away. They were simply gone. The sockets were clean and empty, as though something had removed them carefully.
I stayed there for perhaps ten seconds. Then I stood and returned to the station.
The checklist was real. All of it.
I was not hallucinating. Cold, exposure and lack of sleep were not making me see things. Whatever the protocol had been designed to contain was out there.
And it had rules.
I went inside and sat at the monitoring desk. My hands were no longer shaking.
At 06:31, I heard Euan's utility vehicle enter the car park. I went to the front door and locked it. The deadbolt clicked into place, and I kept my hand on it for a moment to make certain it had engaged.
Then I returned to the monitoring room and opened the physical log. I wrote the time first, 06:33, then recorded what I had found.
Pale mineral dust line on north side, approx. 35 metres. Runs perpendicular from north door. Dead ptarmigan at terminus. Eyes removed. Clean sockets. No trauma. No footprints. No vehicle access.
I stopped and stared at the words.
They looked mad, but they were true.
I turned back through the previous pages. Nobody had written anything like it. There were instrument faults, calibration adjustments and pressure readings. Ordinary things. Nothing about pale dust, dead birds or tall white forms standing outside in the dark.
Euan's vehicle was still running in the car park. I could hear its diesel engine through the window.
I stood and looked through the north-facing window. The line remained there, pale against the dark ground, perfectly straight and ending at the bird.
The front door opened.
I turned so quickly that my chair rolled backwards and struck the filing cabinet.
Euan stood in the doorway holding his clipboard and flask. He looked at me, then at the open log on the desk, then back at me.
"You went outside," he said.
"Yes."
"North side?"
"Yes."
He put his flask on the desk harder than usual. It was not quite a slam. He picked up the log and read what I had written. His jaw tightened.
He read it twice.
"You didn't touch anything?"
"No."
"You didn't cross the line?"
"No."
He closed the log and studied me for a long time. His eyes were the same tired grey as always, but now there was something beneath the tiredness. Not anger. Something closer to resignation.
"Good," he said. "Stay inside. Lock the doors. Don't open them until I ring you."
"What are you going to do?"
"Lock the doors, Callum."
He left. I heard his vehicle pull out of the car park and head down the access road towards Glenmore.
I locked the front door again. Then I went to the north door and checked its deadbolt. Solid. I checked the south door beyond the staff room. Locked.
I returned to the monitoring room and sat down.
The sun had risen. Full daylight lay across the plateau. The sky was blue and clear, with no wind and no low cloud around the station. Everything looked normal.
I kept the doors locked anyway.
Euan returned at 09:47 with two other people.
I heard the vehicles enter the car park and went to the front window. Euan's utility vehicle was followed by Fiona's estate car and a dark green Cairngorms National Park Authority Land Rover with ranger markings.
I unlocked the front door and stepped outside. The air was still cold, though the sun had begun to warm the granite.
Fiona got out first. She wore walking boots and a fleece jacket, with her Met Office pass clipped to her belt. Euan climbed out next. The ranger was last.
He was tall and broad-shouldered, in full ranger uniform, with a brimmed hat and an operational radio clipped to his belt. I had seen him once before, during my second week, when he came up to check the access gate.
Fiona walked over to me.
"Show us," she said.
I led them around the north side, past the intake mast and the guy wires.
The line was still there.
Fiona stopped about three metres away. Euan halted beside her.
The ranger's name badge identified him as Ranger Alastair Reid. He moved closer and crouched to examine the dust without touching it.
"Straight line," Ranger Alastair Reid said. "No dispersion pattern."
Fiona said nothing. She only stared.
Euan walked along the line, keeping roughly a metre to one side, until he reached the bird. Ranger Alastair Reid followed him. I remained near Fiona.
"The eyes are gone," Ranger Alastair Reid said.
He took a small camera from his belt and photographed the ptarmigan three times.
"No blood. No sign of predation."
Fiona finally moved. She approached the line but did not cross it. She crouched as Ranger Alastair Reid had and held one hand about fifteen centimetres above the dust, not touching it, only hovering.
"How long has it been here?" Ranger Alastair Reid asked.
"Since last night," I said. "It wasn't there at 21:00. I found it at 06:30."
Ranger Alastair Reid looked at Euan.
"You saw it as well?"
"Not until now," Euan said. "Callum found it and called me down."
That was not exactly true. I had not called him, but I did not correct it.
Fiona stood and took a small digital recorder from her jacket pocket. It had a foam windscreen over the microphone. She approached the line, crouched again and placed the recorder on the ground about five centimetres from the dust. She pressed a button. A red light began to flash.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Taking a baseline reading," she said.
She returned to us. We stood in silence for about thirty seconds. Then Fiona retrieved the recorder, pressed the button again and slipped it into her pocket.
"Inside," she said.
We returned to the monitoring room.
Fiona put the recorder beside the log and connected it to the fourth monitor with a short USB cable. She opened a directory and dragged the recording into a folder labelled FIELD SAMPLES 2022.
There were already about twenty files inside it. I had never seen the folder before.
She opened the new recording. Audio-analysis software appeared, displaying a waveform. She pressed play.
At first there was static, a low level of white noise. Then the hum emerged beneath it.
It was the same hum I had heard through the radio, low and steady, slowly increasing. My jaw began to ache merely from listening.
There was something else underneath it.
Another layer.
I leant closer.
Breathing.
Steady. In, out, in, out. The same rhythm I had heard during the night.
I stopped breathing and held it.
The recording continued. So did the breathing.
"That's not me," I said.
Fiona paused the playback.
"You were inside."
"Yes."
"And your microphone was muted."
I stared at her.
"What?"
She pointed at the recorder.
"It's voice-activated. If there isn't any input above its threshold, it records only the ambient channel. That breathing wasn't you."
Euan sat in the other chair and rubbed his face with both hands.
Ranger Alastair Reid stood beside the window, looking towards the dust line.
"How many times has this happened?" he asked.
Fiona did not answer immediately. She closed the audio file and opened the folder again.
Twenty-three files.
She scrolled through them. Some were labelled with dates and others only with times.
"Enough," she said.
"Enough for what?" I asked.
She looked at me.
"Enough to know it's real."
Euan rose and went to the filing cabinet. He took a key ring from his pocket, unlocked the bottom drawer and removed a black case about the size of a shoe box.
He placed it on the desk and opened it.
Inside were about a dozen compact cassette tapes of the sort used in old handheld recorders. Each was labelled with a date and time.
The oldest was dated 14 July 1998.
"These are the originals," Euan said. "From before we went digital."
"You've been recording this for twenty-four years?" I asked.
"Longer," Fiona said. "Those are only the ones we kept."
I picked up a tape dated 3 March 2003. Its label was handwritten in faded blue ink.
"What happens if you listen to them?" I asked.
Euan closed the case.
"People start walking towards the north door in the middle of the night. Eyes open. They don't remember it afterwards."
"Sleepwalking?"
"Yes."
"How long does it take?"
"It depends. Some people need three or four listens. For others, one is enough."
I returned the cassette to the case. My hands were shaking again.
Fiona locked the case and handed it to Euan. He replaced it in the drawer and turned the key.
"The radio is the pathway," I said. "That's why the protocol tells us to remove the headset if it emits the hum."
"Yes," Fiona said.
"Then we disconnect it."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because we've tried that already."
Fiona and Ranger Alastair Reid left the station that afternoon, but after discussing the dust line with the Met Office operations centre in Aberdeen and the ranger base at Glenmore, they returned during the evening of 23 October. They intended to monitor the site overnight in case the line reappeared or the instruments failed again.
Euan went to sleep in the staff accommodation block about 180 metres south of the station. Ranger Alastair Reid remained outside for part of the night, checking the grounds and the operational radio channels. Fiona stayed in the main building, working from a side office and reviewing the field recordings.
I waited until 02:33 on 24 October 2022.
I had spent the whole shift thinking about the aerial.
The hum came through the radio. The radio was connected to the aerial array on the roof. The aerial had to be the link. Cut the link and stop the signal.
Simple.
I took a torch and a socket wrench from the workshop and left through the south door.
The air was cold and still. There was no wind. The only sound was my boots against the gravel and stone.
I climbed the exterior ladder fixed to the south wall, the one Euan used for monthly maintenance. The rungs were so cold that my hands began to ache after the first few.
I kept climbing.
The roof was flat, covered in mineral felt and gravel. The aerial mast rose from its centre, about 4.5 metres high, fixed to a steel base plate by four heavy bolts. Guy wires stretched from it to anchors along the roof edges.
I crossed to the mast and crouched beside the base plate.
The bolts were large and industrial. I fitted the socket wrench over the first and pulled.
It did not move.
I shifted my grip and pulled harder.
The bolt turned a fraction. Then another fraction.
The radio inside the station erupted.
It was not the low hum. This sound was sharper and higher, cutting through the station walls so clearly that I could hear it from the roof.
I dropped the wrench. It struck the gravel with a metallic clang.
The sky flashed white.
It was not lightning. There was no thunder. There was only whiteness, as though someone had switched on an enormous floodlight directly above me.
For one second, perhaps two, the entire plateau was illuminated. I saw Cairn Gorm, the boulder fields, the winding access road, the accommodation block and the cloud filling the glens below and stretching across the Highlands.
Then darkness returned.
I snatched up the wrench and ran to the ladder.
I climbed down too quickly. My boots slipped twice, and I struck the ground hard enough for my knees to buckle.
I ran to the south door and pulled it open.
Fiona stood in the corridor. She was perfectly still, her arms at her sides, her face calm.
"New staff always try this," she said.
I stopped. My chest heaved. The wrench was still in my hand.
"What?"
"Disconnecting the aerial. Cutting the power. Smashing the radio. They always try."
The north door flexed inwards.
It did not open. The metal bent, as though something on the other side had pressed against it with enough force to deform it.
Then I heard pounding.
It was not coming from the north.
It came from the south, behind me.
I turned. The south door was closed. I had only just come through it, but now someone was striking it from outside.
Heavy, rhythmic blows. A fist against metal.
Beneath the pounding, I heard the hum.
Euan came around the corner from the staff room. His hair stuck up and he wore a T-shirt and work trousers. In both hands, he carried an emergency flare pistol retained for mountain rescue signalling.
"How bad?" he asked Fiona.
"The north door's holding," she said.
"The south door?"
"I don't know."
The pounding grew louder.
"Ranger Alastair Reid?" Euan asked.
Fiona nodded.
I stared at her.
"Ranger Alastair Reid is outside?"
"Not anymore," she said.
The north door flexed again. Its deadbolt rattled.
"Callum," Fiona said. "The ozone pump."
I did not move.
"Now."
I ran to the calibration laboratory and pushed the main power switch down.
The green light went out.
The hum fell silent.
I ran back into the corridor.
The pounding had stopped.
Fiona stood with her ear pressed against the south door. Euan held the flare pistol raised and aimed at the north door.
We waited in silence.
Ten seconds. Twenty.
Then something whistled.
One clear, high note from immediately outside the north door.
Footsteps followed, but not the sound of boots. Something softer moved away across the ground.
Euan lowered the flare pistol.
Fiona stepped away from the south door and looked at me.
"Don't ever do that again," she said.
At 06:41, the sky turned grey.
I unlocked the south door and went outside.
The dust line had doubled back.
It no longer ended where the ptarmigan had lain. It had curved, looped and continued to the base of the aerial mast, completing a circuit. Pale mineral dust against dark rock, five centimetres wide and unnaturally precise.
I followed it with my eyes.
It ran from the north door to the place where the bird had been, except the bird was gone. There were no feathers and no trace of it.
At a sharp angle, the second segment returned towards the aerial mast.
Fiona came outside behind me. Euan, woken fully by the attack, followed her.
We walked around to the south side.
Ranger Alastair Reid's hat lay on the bottom rung of the exterior steps.
Only the hat.
It was the brimmed hat issued with his Cairngorms National Park Authority uniform, lightly dusted with grit.
There was no blood. No scuffing. Nothing else.
Euan picked it up and turned it over.
Inside the band, the name ALASTAIR REID had been written in black permanent marker.
"His Land Rover is still here," Euan said.
I looked towards the car park. The dark green ranger vehicle stood beneath the floodlight, beside my four-wheel-drive utility vehicle. The keys were probably still inside it.
Fiona took out her radio and selected the main Cairngorms National Park Authority operational channel.
Static.
She moved to another channel, then another.
More static.
"Ranger Alastair Reid, this is Fiona Hargreaves. Respond."
Nothing.
She tried again.
"Alastair, if you can hear me, respond."
Static.
She clipped the radio back to her belt and looked at Euan.
"File it," she said.
Euan drove to the ranger base at Glenmore at 11:30. I remained in the monitoring room and watched him leave.
He returned at 14:15 carrying a clipboard and wearing a blank expression. He sat at the desk and began to write.
I watched over his shoulder.
Ranger Alastair Reid returned to Cairngorm Atmospheric Monitoring Station during the evening of 23 October 2022 following an instrumentation and field-sample anomaly. Conducted grounds inspection with Met Office staff and remained on site for overnight monitoring. Last accounted for before the incident recorded at 02:33 on 24 October 2022. Hat recovered near south entrance at 06:41 on 24 October 2022. Vehicle remained on site. No confirmed signs of distress. Search coordinated by Police Scotland with Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, Cairngorms National Park Authority ranger service and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Coastguard helicopter evacuation capability placed on standby. Status: missing.
He stopped writing and stared at the page.
"That isn't what happened," I said.
"It's what goes in the report."
"He was pounding on the door. You heard it."
Euan put down his pen.
"Yes. I heard it."
"So why?"
"Because if I write what actually happened, they'll shut us down. They'll pull the whole operation, and then nobody will be here to follow the protocol."
"Maybe that would be better."
He looked at me.
"Do you think it stops if we leave?"
I did not answer.
He picked up the pen and signed the report. Then he removed a second form from the clipboard.
It was a transfer request.
He entered his name, staff number and current assignment, then requested a post at the Met Office operations centre in Aberdeen, with effect from 15 November 2022.
"You're leaving," I said.
"Yes."
"Because of last night?"
"Because I've been here four years and I'm tired."
He signed the transfer request and placed both forms in a manila envelope. He sealed it and left it on the desk.
"Fiona will countersign them," he said.
"She always does."
Fiona returned at 16:30.
She read Euan's report, then his transfer request, and signed both without comment.
Afterwards, she took the A4 laminated protocol sheet from the binder and laid it on the desk in front of me. She held a black permanent marker. She removed its cap and wrote a new line beneath the twelve existing rules.
13. Do not attempt to disconnect, disable or interfere with the radio aerial array under any circumstances.
She pushed the sheet across the desk.
"Initial it."
I looked at the new rule. My hands were shaking.
"Callum."
I picked up a pen and clicked it twice. My handwriting was worse than usual, the letters cramped and uneven.
I initialled the line. Then I added the date: 24 October 2022.
Fiona took back the sheet and returned it to the binder. She studied me for a long moment.
"You're staying on nights," she said.
"Yes."
"You follow the protocol. All of it."
"Exactly."
"Yes."
"You don't try to fix this. You don't try to stop it. You don't try to silence the mountain."
I nodded.
She walked to the door, then stopped and looked back.
"The mountain has rules," she said. "We follow them. That's the job."
She left.
I sat alone in the monitoring room with the binder open before me.
Thirteen rules now.
I read the new one again.
My hands were still shaking.
