The next, you were standing in your kitchen at two in the morning with no idea how you had got there.

I should have refused. Should have torn the contract in half, walked away and taken my chances with the disease.

But I had already felt my mind slipping. Already spent mornings hunting for words that had once come easily. Already lost entire conversations in the gaps opening inside my short-term memory.

My father had died screaming at shadows. During the final six months of his life, he had not recognised my mother.

Synaptica Biomed Ltd's private research campus lay near the North Pennines, roughly two hours north of Manchester in ordinary traffic. I drove there the following Monday beneath a low grey sky, following the satnav to a guardhouse surrounded by four-metre welded-mesh fencing topped with anti-climb wire.

The guard checked my identification twice, made a telephone call and finally waved me through.

The campus looked ordinary enough. Modern glass-and-steel buildings, landscaped grounds and walking paths. Signs directed staff towards administration, manufacturing and the car park.

My instructions led me instead to a smaller structure at the northern edge of the grounds, set apart from the main complex. Concrete walls. Few windows. A loading bay secured by reinforced doors.

I parked in one of three marked spaces and sat there for a minute, both hands resting on the steering wheel, staring at the building that would become my world for the next nine months.

The signing bonus was already in my account. Nearly half had already gone on bills from the diagnostic tests.

Entry required an access card, a biometric scan and a six-digit code. I had never seen security like it outside the most tightly controlled biosafety laboratories.

Three separate checkpoints took me deeper into the building and further underground. Fluorescent lighting. Painted concrete-block walls in institutional beige. Air that tasted as though it had passed through too many lungs.

A woman in a white laboratory coat met me at the third checkpoint. About 1.65 metres tall, black hair tied in a severe bun, dark brown eyes, slight build. She held out her hand.

"Dr Mercer? I'm Dr Priya Shah."

Her grip was firm and professional. I shook her hand while trying to pin her name inside my failing memory.

Priya. Day-shift colleague. Details from the orientation pack I had studied three times the night before.

"Daniel," I said.

"Good to meet you."

"Likewise."

She gestured along the corridor.

"I'll show you the observation centre. Martin is finishing his shift now. You'll meet him before he leaves."

We passed through another secure door and followed a corridor that sloped noticeably downwards. By then we had to be ten or twelve metres below ground.

The air felt heavier. Pressure built behind my ears.

"How long have you been on the project?" I asked.

"Four months," Priya said. Her voice remained measured and professional. "Since the subjects were admitted for surgery and baseline testing."

"And the protocol has been stable?"

"The baseline phase has. The enhancement compound begins tomorrow morning."

She glanced at me.

"You've reviewed the documentation?"

"Three times."

"Good. You'll want to review it again after you've seen them."

"Them?"

"The subjects."

The screens carried live feeds from the cells. Reinforced concrete rooms, each roughly three metres by four, each containing one prisoner in a plain grey prison-issue tracksuit.

A man stood at the nearest workstation with his back to us. About 1.80 metres tall, stocky, dark hair greying at the temples, a rumpled laboratory coat over an open-necked shirt.

He turned as we entered.

"Fresh blood?"

His voice was tired and gruff with the exhaustion of a night spent under artificial light.

"Dr Martin Hargreaves, meet Dr Daniel Mercer," Priya said with efficient formality.

Martin crossed the room and shook my hand. His grip was solid but weary, like the rest of him. Stubble shadowed his jaw. Crow's feet surrounded dark brown eyes. He had the particular dishevelled appearance of someone who worked through the night and had forgotten what daylight felt like.

"Welcome to the hole," he said. "Priya shown you the subjects yet?"

"I've only just arrived."

"Right."

He walked to the nearest workstation and pressed a key to enlarge the display.

"Might as well start with Subject A."

The image expanded to show a man sitting motionless on a concrete bench. Approximately 1.83 metres tall. Gaunt. Thinning brown hair.

His eyes caught me first. Pale blue, unnaturally so, fixed on nothing with an emptiness that made my skin crawl.

"Gareth Vale," Priya said, quiet and clinical. "Forty-three years old. Convicted of murdering six children over seven years."

The name unlocked images from the Ministry of Justice and Prison Service files I had forced myself to review. Crime scenes. Small bodies. Careful disposal. Methodical selection.

I swallowed.

"Current status?"

"Baseline phase complete," Martin said. "Tomorrow will be day one of the escalation phase. His linguistic processing, mathematical ability and pattern recognition have all been mapped. No adverse physical reaction to the port or carrier solution."

Yet.

The word seemed to hang in the recycled air even though he had not spoken it.

Priya moved to the second workstation. Subject B appeared: a woman with short, mouse-brown hair, pale grey eyes and unremarkable features that must have helped her pass unnoticed during her years as a nurse.

"Rebecca Shaw, thirty-eight. Four patients murdered and cannibalised while under her care."

My stomach tightened. I had read her file too. Read what she had done to the bodies.

"Her baseline behaviour has been more volatile," Priya continued. "We expect agitation to rise during dose escalation."

Subject C came next. Peter Latham, forty-six, greying hair neatly combed, wire-framed glasses and soft features that might have belonged to someone's grandfather.

The file said teacher.

The restricted Crown Court and Family Court records also established five child victims, though most details remained sealed and reporting restrictions protected their identities.

"He's the quietest," Martin said. "Cooperative. Polite. Creepy as hell, if you ask me."

Subject D was Moira Venn, fifty-two, with a grey bob, cold blue eyes and angular features. An eighteen-year poisoning spree. Fourteen confirmed victims across three English counties. Patient and methodical. The sort of killer who planned every detail.

Finally, Subject E. Adrian Kells.

Approximately 1.88 metres tall, with long dark hair and intense eyes. Handsome in a way that had probably helped him recruit followers to his apocalyptic sect. Thirty-nine years old. Responsible for forty-seven deaths at an isolated Welsh retreat.

"He talks more than the others," Priya said. "He'll try to engage you during monitoring sessions. Don't respond."

I looked at the five screens.

The observation centre seemed smaller. Ten or twelve metres underground. Sealed doors. Recycled air.

This was the price of my treatment. My one prospect of retaining myself.

I stood there memorising their faces, knowing that without help I would soon begin to forget them, and wondered which of us was truly the subject of the experiment.

The first dose was administered at 06:00 on Tuesday morning, the day after my orientation shift.

I watched the automated system engage on the monitors. Its movements were precise and mechanical, requiring no direct human intervention.

Each subject had a port implanted at the base of the skull. According to Priya's briefing notes, the ports had been fitted when they were admitted four months earlier for surgery and baseline testing. They connected directly to the cerebrospinal fluid, bypassing the blood-brain barrier.

Every six hours, the pumps activated with a soft hydraulic hiss audible through the cell microphones. Clear liquid travelled through transparent tubing and into the ports, flooding the subjects' brains with compounds whose names I still struggled to pronounce after reading the chemical breakdowns Priya had supplied.

They reacted to the first infusion with brief flinches and complaints of pressure. Vale described a cold sensation spreading through his skull. Shaw vomited once. The others remained seated while the carrier solution and active compounds entered their cerebrospinal fluid.

Priya said the discomfort should diminish as their nervous systems adapted. The baseline carrier infusions had already made the ports part of their routine. The enhancement compound itself was new.

I recorded the schedule in my observation log: 06:00, 12:00, 18:00 and 00:00. Four doses each day.

The pumps delivered precise volumes calibrated to body weight and neural-response patterns. Vale received 0.7 ml. Shaw received 0.5 ml because of her smaller frame and elevated heart rate. Latham took 0.8 ml. Venn received 0.6 ml. Kells, the largest, received a full millilitre each cycle.

The enhanced cognition emerged gradually over the next three days.

Vale showed it first.

Priya noticed during our overlap shift on Wednesday afternoon. He had been staring at the wall of his cell, but his eyes were moving as though tracking something invisible.

She opened the thermal-imaging overlay and pointed out the heat signature across his brain. His prefrontal cortex blazed with activity at three times the level measured during intake.

"Watch this," she said.

She activated the intercom.

"Subject A, can you hear me?"

Vale's eyes shifted towards the camera without his head moving.

"Yes."

"I'm going to show you a sequence of numbers. Tell me what you see."

Priya entered a command. A screen descended from the ceiling of Vale's cell and displayed a string of digits.

"The sequence increases by two, decreases by one, then increases by three. The pattern breaks at eight. It should be seven."

Priya glanced at me.

"That was extracted from a twenty-digit randomised sequence. He identified the deliberate error in under five seconds."

Something cold settled in my stomach.

Professional curiosity, I told myself. Scientific interest in measurable cognitive enhancement.

But my hands were shaking again. This tremor had nothing to do with the disease. It came from watching a child killer's brain burn with superhuman processing speed.

By Thursday morning, all five subjects were demonstrating comparable improvements.

Shaw solved complex mathematical equations Martin presented during the night shift. I watched the recordings during the handover. She completed differential-calculus problems in her head and began reciting answers before Martin had finished entering the questions.

Her eyes possessed the same concentrated intensity that had developed in Vale. Looking at them made my skin crawl.

Latham displayed perfect photographic recall. Priya showed him images for three seconds at a time - paintings, photographs, pages of text - then asked him to describe them.

He reproduced every detail. The number of brushstrokes in one corner of a Turner reproduction. The registration number of a dark green panel van in the background of a street photograph: LN14 KVD. Every word on a page from a medical textbook.

He recited it all verbatim in that gentle, grandfatherly voice, which somehow made the achievement worse.

I documented everything.

Memory formation accelerating beyond normal human capacity. Pattern recognition increasing exponentially. Cognitive-processing speed rising with each dose cycle.

The nootropics were working exactly as Synaptica had predicted.

Venn demonstrated strategic reasoning beyond the genius-level intelligence recorded at baseline. Martin displayed a grandmaster chess problem taken from a famous tournament. She solved it in forty seconds, then supplied three alternative solutions the original grandmaster had not considered.

Kells improved across every measure: memory, processing speed, pattern recognition and strategic reasoning.

But he also kept attempting to speak to us through the cameras. His charismatic smile never faded, even as his cognitive abilities multiplied. Priya's warning sounded in my mind whenever his gaze found the lens.

Don't respond. Don't engage.

I did neither.

At 06:00 on Friday, seventy-two hours after the first enhancement dose, something changed.

I was alone in the observation centre. Priya was not due for another two hours, and Martin had left half an hour earlier at the end of his night shift.

I sat at my workstation with tea cooling in a paper cup, reading the overnight logs Martin had compiled.

Then Vale began to speak.

I looked up from the logs, confused by the sounds coming through his audio feed. He sat cross-legged in the centre of his cell, speaking in fluid sentences I could not understand.

The rhythm was wrong for English. The tones rose and fell in patterns I had never heard from him.

I opened the audio-analysis software, my hands clumsy on the keyboard. The programme ran its language-identification protocol.

Mandarin Chinese. Ninety-seven per cent confidence.

My mouth went dry.

I checked Vale's intake file and scrolled through the background information Synaptica had supplied. GCSE-level education. Raised in rural Cumbria. No foreign-language training in his educational, Prison Service or Ministry of Justice records.

English only.

He continued speaking while I recorded everything, one finger trembling against the control.

Then he changed languages in the middle of a sentence.

The sounds altered completely. Harder consonants. A different cadence.

The software updated its assessment.

Russian. Ninety-four per cent confidence.

Vale's eyes were open but unfocused, staring at nothing. His mouth moved with perfect fluency, words pouring from him in a steady stream.

He changed again.

Arabic this time. I recognised the guttural sounds even before the software confirmed it.

I should have called Priya at once. Should have reported the anomaly through the proper channels.

Instead, I sat frozen at my workstation, watching a man who had scarcely left Cumbria speak three foreign languages with native fluency.

The languages stopped.

Vale's eyes focused and found the camera.

He began to recite names.

"Li Xinyi."

His pronunciation was perfect. Every tone precise.

"Mikhail Antonov. Samira Haddad. Min-jun Park. Katya Morozova. Omar Nasser."

Children's names.

I knew it immediately, in the way the body recognises danger before the mind has understood it. His cadence was too careful. Too reverent. Each name was pronounced with exact attention to its language of origin.

My chest tightened. The observation centre shrank around me. The recycled air felt too thin.

Vale stopped after six.

I could not breathe properly. The tightness spread from my chest into my throat. My vision narrowed at the edges.

I recognised the symptoms. A panic attack. My first in years. The first since the diagnosis, since accepting that I was slowly losing myself and could do nothing about it.

But I could do something about this.

My hands shook more violently than they ever had from the disease as I opened Vale's restricted case files. Synaptica had given me limited access to Ministry of Justice, Crown Court and Family Court records, supposedly only enough to monitor psychological deterioration. Child-victim details remained protected by reporting restrictions.

Most of the information was redacted.

The names were not.

I cross-referenced them while Vale sat silently, my breaths coming too quickly and too shallowly.

The first name he had spoken, Li Xinyi, appeared in the file. Victim four. Eight years old. Found in a drainage ditch beside farmland outside Carlisle.

Mikhail Antonov. Victim five. Nine years old. From a Russian immigrant family. Discovered in a disused stone byre.

My vision blurred. I wiped my eyes with my sleeve and kept searching.

Samira Haddad. Victim two. Seven years old. Daughter of Syrian refugees.

Min-jun Park. Katya Morozova. Omar Nasser.

Every name matched one of Vale's six victims.

He pronounced names he should never have known. Names sealed from him by court order and reporting restrictions. Names held only in restricted records he had never been permitted to access.

He certainly should not have been able to pronounce them with native fluency in languages he had never learnt.

I sat in that observation centre, ten to twelve metres underground, watching a child murderer recite his victims' names in perfect Mandarin, Russian, Arabic and Korean, and I could not explain it.

Nootropics could enhance cognition, memory and processing speed. They could not grant impossible knowledge. They could not teach languages overnight. They could not reveal information held in restricted legal files.

Vale looked directly at the camera. His pale blue eyes were unnaturally bright.

"I remember everything now," he said in English.

The panic attack struck with full force. I bent forwards and put my head between my knees to stop myself passing out.

For the next four days, the enhancement continued.

I reported Vale's episode. Priya documented it as an unexplained linguistic event. Martin suggested cryptomnesia until I showed him the restricted records and asked where Vale could possibly have encountered the names. Synaptica ordered us to maintain the dosing schedule and collect more data.

By the following Tuesday, treatment day eight, the situation passed from unsettling into impossible.

I came in shortly before 06:00 expecting another linguistic display, perhaps more references to the victims.

What happened instead made me wonder whether the disease had already taken more of my mind than I realised.

Vale stood one metre from his cell camera, perfectly still. His pale blue eyes locked upon the lens with an intensity that reached me through two monitors and twelve metres of reinforced concrete.

"Good morning, Wren."

My paper cup struck the desk. Lukewarm tea spread across my observation log, soaking through three pages. The dark liquid bled into ink and blurred the previous night's documentation.

Nobody had called me Wren in seventeen years. Not since my father died of the same disease now consuming my brain.

"How..."

I stopped.

Talking to the monitors. First sign you are losing it.

Vale smiled.

Not the vacant expression I had documented throughout the week. This was a knowing smile. Personal.

"Your father called you that because you darted everywhere as a child. You never kept still. Always fidgeting. Bouncing your leg. Tapping pencils."

Vale tilted his head.

"You're doing it now. Left foot. It's been tapping since you sat down four minutes ago."

I looked beneath the desk.

He was right.

My leg stopped.

"The nickname embarrassed you through secondary school," Vale continued. His voice retained the same flat quality recorded at intake, but the content made the room tilt. "You asked him to stop when you turned thirteen. He did. He called you son instead. But he thought Wren whenever he looked at you. That association never left his mind."

The observation centre contracted around me. Nine metres across suddenly felt like a cupboard.

"You can't know that."

My voice was hoarse.

"Dr Priya Shah," Vale said, without taking his eyes from the camera. "You've been wondering how much weight she's lost since the baseline phase began. Just over twenty-one kilograms. She vomits everything she eats in the second-floor women's toilets, the ones near the archive room where nobody goes. She started again six weeks ago, when Subject D's baseline neural activity approached the critical threshold.

"Priya nearly died from this during her second year at university. Her roommate found her unconscious in their hall of residence. Heart rate thirty-eight beats per minute."

I stood so quickly that my chair rolled backwards and struck the wall.

"Dr Martin Hargreaves," Vale continued. His smile widened. "He works nights to avoid calls from his former wife about their daughter's university fund. The fund he gambled away over eighteen months at a Manchester city-centre casino. Thirty-six thousand pounds at the blackjack tables. His daughter thinks the money is still there. She starts at the University of Leeds in September. He hasn't told her."

"Stop."

The word scarcely emerged.

"You carry the same high-risk markers found in your father, including an APOE4 allele and a presenilin-1 mutation. Together they indicate an exceptionally high risk of early-onset Alzheimer's disease and an expected course of unusually rapid progression. Synaptica's models say you'll forget your own name within eight months without intervention. Perhaps sooner."

My hands shook. Not the disease. Fear.

"How the hell do you know these things?"

Vale turned slightly and addressed the empty wall to his left.

"They tell me," he said.

"Who?"

"The voices."

"What voices?"

"Xinyi's is the smallest. She was only eight."

His eyes lost focus.

"She whispers in Mandarin. She tells me about her mother's dumplings, how they smelled while they steamed. Mushroom and cabbage. She was thinking about them when I... when it happened."

His breathing quickened and grew shallow.

"Mikhail speaks more loudly. He's angry. Calls me words in Russian I can't translate, although I understand what they mean. He wants me to suffer.

"He describes suffering. He felt it for forty-three minutes before his heart stopped."

I should have called Priya. Should have triggered the medical alarm.

Instead, I stood there watching a multiple child murderer converse with his victims.

"Samira prays."

Vale turned to the right, tracking something I could not see.

"Five times each day, as she did when she was alive. Her prayers are beautiful. I don't deserve to hear them, but she shares them anyway. She forgives me. That's the worst part. Her forgiveness."

"That's not..."

I stopped.

Not possible. None of it was possible.

Vale's attention snapped back to the camera.

His pupils had expanded until they almost consumed the blue.

"The enhancement doesn't merely amplify cognition. It opens pathways. Neural connections that shouldn't exist."

He pressed his palm against the wall.

"Their memories survived. In the quantum substrate. The nootropic compounds create receptor sites for information that exists beyond conventional neurological storage."

"That's insane."

"Is it?"

A blood vessel ruptured in Vale's left eye. Bright red spread across the white.

He did not blink.

"You're treating whole-life prisoners with experimental compounds that triple prefrontal-cortex activity and produce impossible knowledge. You signed the contracts. Took the money."

A vessel burst in his right eye. Against the blood, his pale irises looked translucent.

"Which of us is truly insane, Wren?"

Then he laughed.

It did not sound human. High and manic, pouring out as he threw back his head.

One voice with Russian pronunciation.

A second with Mandarin tones.

A third shaped by Arabic inflection.

A fourth with Korean rhythm.

A fifth with Russian cadence again.

A sixth in English.

"Six voices," he cried. "Six children. Six eternal companions inside my enhanced brain."

He spun in a circle with his arms spread wide.

"Li Xinyi!" he shouted at the ceiling.

"Mikhail Antonov!" he called to the left wall.

"Samira Haddad!" To the right.

Then the remaining three.

"Min-jun Park! Katya Morozova! Omar Nasser!"

All six victims accounted for.

Vale fell to his knees. Tears of blood ran down both cheeks from his ruptured eyes.

"I'm sorry," he whispered to the floor. "I'm so sorry. I know it doesn't matter. I know being sorry fixes nothing, but I'm sorry."

He rocked forwards until his forehead touched the concrete.

"She was scared. Xinyi was so scared. She called for her mother. Mama, mama, over and over. I can hear every moment now. The enhancement won't let me forget. It won't let me ignore her."

His shoulders shook. I could not tell whether he was sobbing or laughing.

"Mikhail fought. He bit my hand and drew blood. He was brave. So brave. He tells me his last thought was that his mother would be proud because he fought."

Movement flashed across the second monitor.

Rebecca Shaw hurled herself against her cell door. The reinforced steel shuddered in its frame.

"Get them out!" she screamed through the audio feed. "Get their hands out of my brain!"

She struck the door again. Then again. Rhythmic impacts registered on the vibration sensors.

"Little hands. Little fingers crawling through my synapses."

Another impact. Blood appeared on the door where her forehead had split.

"They won't stop clawing. They want their organs back. They want what I took."

Vale's laughter rose above Shaw's screams.

"We all hear them now," he said between gasps. "All five of us. The enhanced can't escape their victims. The voices follow us into our amplified minds, and they never stop speaking."

Nobody could enter quickly enough to stop what I intended to do next.

Thermal scans showing impossible activity in the prefrontal cortex, audio of Vale speaking languages he had never learnt and footage of Shaw splitting her forehead against steel were removed from the facility's accessible storage.

But deleting local data was not enough. Synaptica maintained redundant off-site backups. Some of the research might already be beyond my reach.

I could not guarantee its complete destruction. I could only make recovery and replication more difficult, and ensure that nobody could dismiss the fatal outcome concealed beneath this campus.

The chemical store stood behind the observation room. Its reinforced door used a manual lock. A physical key hung beside Priya's workstation.

My legs carried me unsteadily across the room. I kept one hand clamped over the respirator and took the key ring with the other. The lock turned smoothly, expensive engineering functioning exactly as designed.

Metal shelves filled the store, holding rows of glass containers. Clear liquids sat beneath labels bearing alphanumeric codes and technical chemical names: the nootropic base that opened impossible pathways, the catalysts that allowed consciousness to transfer, and the stabilisers that kept amplified brains functioning while they processed multiple streams of awareness.

I pushed through the final door and emerged into grey morning light. The North Pennine cold struck my face. Synaptica's isolated campus spread around me: manicured grounds, modern buildings and four-metre welded-mesh security fencing topped with anti-climb wire.

My car stood in the distant staff car park where I had left it before dawn.

I would not reach it.

Security vehicles were already crossing the campus, blue lights flashing without sirens. Figures ran towards the stairwell entrance. More alarms started in the buildings behind them.

My mind would continue to decay. The disease was expected to progress with the same terrible speed as my father's, perhaps faster. I would lose names, then faces, then the basic functions that kept me alive. My genetic markers did not guarantee an exact course, but they gave me no credible reason for hope.

Yet I had stopped something worse here.

I had contained the cognitive enhancement that opened pathways for the dead. I had destroyed the available drugs that allowed murdered consciousnesses to possess living tissue. I had exposed the programme's fatal result and damaged the research that might have weaponised human awareness.

Synaptica had promised to recommend replacing their whole-life orders with determinate minimum terms and Parole Board reviews after thirty years, but no private contract could lawfully deliver that outcome. Now none of them would ever leave.

The security officers were close enough for me to see their faces. I raised my empty hands and waited for them.

I had sacrificed my only prospective treatment to prevent the possession network from reaching staff, then the public. Whatever happened to me next, I had made the choice while I could still understand it.

My father's voice echoed through my failing memory. Not Wren. Daniel.
