I gripped the metal rail beneath the monitor until my knuckles whitened.
"Are you all right, Mercer?"
I turned. Captain Ruth Calder stood behind me in the RRS Resolution's operations room, her face washed blue by the surrounding displays.
"Yes, Captain. Just taking it all in."
She nodded, not entirely convinced. "Three weeks on station, and you still look as though you've seen a ghost whenever you watch the deep-water feeds."
I forced a smile. "A healthy respect for the deep."
"Your healthy respect has produced some excellent samples. Dr Shaw was telling me about the extremophiles you recovered yesterday."
"Thank you, Captain."
As Calder walked away, I turned back to the screen. There was an irony in being a British extremophile microbiologist who was frightened of the deep sea. I had spent years studying organisms from hadal environments in laboratories and research centres, and I had trained as a relief submersible pilot because field teams needed people who could do more than wait for samples to reach the surface. Actually working above the Mariana Trench was another matter.
The RRS Resolution was a surface-going British oceanographic research vessel, not some fortress on the seabed. Yet the live cameras, hydrophones and pressure feeds made the abyss feel close enough to touch. Beneath our hull lay kilometres of water and, farther down the trench slope, Challenger Deep.
I checked my watch. It was time to process the next batch from the shallower hydrothermal vent field we had surveyed before moving towards the deepest part of the trench. I collected my equipment and headed for the sample laboratory adjoining the flooded submersible dock.
The next few hours passed quickly. I extracted mineral deposits and biological material from the collection units our remotely operated vehicle had retrieved from the active vents. Focusing on sterile technique, sample labels and culture conditions kept me from thinking about the weight of the ocean beneath us.
After logging the last specimen, I stored everything and went to the mess.
The small room was not empty. Lucy Harcourt sat at one of the tables, talking with expansive hand gestures. Owen Price sat opposite her, studying a ruggedised tablet and occasionally nodding without looking up.
"Daniel." Lucy waved me over. "Come and look at these readings."
I poured myself a mug of strong tea and joined them. "What am I looking at?"
"Pressure anomalies." Lucy pushed the tablet towards me. "I've been tracking them for the past six days. See these fluctuations? They don't correspond to any known tidal pattern or deep-water current."
I studied the graph. "Could be an instrument fault."
"That's what I said," Owen murmured, still examining his own data.
Lucy shook her head. "I've checked the equipment three times and compared it with two independent sensors. The readings are accurate."
"What do you think is causing them?" I asked.
"That's the exciting part. I don't know." Her hazel eyes brightened behind rectangular glasses. "It could be a deep current we haven't modelled, or seismic activity too slight for the main array to resolve."
I was about to answer when the mess door flew open. Callum Reed hurried in, his fair hair dishevelled and his eyes wide.
"We've got a situation," he said, breathing hard. "The Japanese research vessel Mirai Maru is about 37 km from us. Their submersible is trapped at the bottom of the trench."
The room fell silent.
"How bad?" I asked, my stomach tightening.
"Bad. Four researchers aboard. The Shinkai is wedged in some sort of crevice and can't manoeuvre free."
Lucy stood. "Have they sent coordinates?"
Callum nodded. "Captain Calder wants everyone in the operations room. Now."
We followed him through the Resolution's narrow passageways. The operations room was already alive with controlled activity when we arrived. Captain Calder stood at the central console, speaking over the maritime communications link.
"Mirai Maru, this is RRS Resolution. We are receiving your distress call. Go ahead."
A crackling voice answered in precise, heavily accented English.
"RRS Resolution, this is Captain Kenji Sato of Mirai Maru. Thank you for responding. Our situation is critical."
"We understand you have a submersible trapped. Give us the details."
"Shinkai was conducting an exploratory dive when it became wedged in a narrow crevice at approximately 10,900 m. They have been trapped for six hours. Oxygen consumption is increasing."
My chest tightened at the depth. Challenger Deep was the deepest known region of the world's oceans.
Calder looked around the room. "What do we have that can reach them?"
The chief engineer stepped forwards. "The Faraday. She's rated for 11,000 m."
The Faraday was our British full-ocean-depth submersible, carried for extreme-pressure sampling and the deployment of experimental quantum sensors. She was one of the few craft in the region capable of reaching the Shinkai.
"How soon can we launch?" Calder asked.
"We can have her ready for final checks by 03:15 and launch at 04:30."
It was 22:00.
"Begin preparations immediately." Calder turned back to the communications system. "Mirai Maru, we are preparing a full-ocean-depth submersible for rescue. What is your crew's remaining oxygen?"
"At present consumption, approximately eighteen hours. Perhaps longer if they can remain calm and reduce exertion."
"Received. Maintain this channel and stand by for updates."
As the operations room erupted into purposeful movement, I found myself retreating towards the door. The thought of descending to the bottom of the trench brought sweat to my skin.
Calder caught my eye. "Mercer, Harcourt, Price and Mori, stay behind."
Aiko Mori had been working at a navigation console near the rear of the room. She joined us as the others cleared out, leaving only essential personnel.
Calder faced us. "I need two pilots for the Faraday. The mission is to attach a rescue cable to the Shinkai, pull her clear of the crevice and escort her upwards. Aiko, you have more full-ocean-depth experience than anyone else aboard."
"I'll go, Captain," Aiko said at once.
Calder nodded, then looked at me. "Mercer, I want you in the second seat. You're qualified on the Faraday, you know her sampling and manipulator systems, and you have relief-pilot training."
My mouth went dry. "I'll do it."
She studied me. "Are you certain? I know what happened off South Georgia."
"Someone has to go. I'm qualified, and I know the Faraday's systems better than most people aboard."
"Very well. You and Mori will pilot." She turned to Lucy. "Harcourt, remain aboard Resolution and monitor the pressure anomalies. Coordinate all rescue telemetry. Price, support her and preserve every incoming sensor stream. If these anomalies are real, I want our pilots warned before they encounter them."
Lucy looked as though she wanted to object, but she gave a disciplined nod. "Yes, Captain."
"The pilots report for checks at 03:15. Launch is at 04:30. That gives you roughly four hours to rest before the briefing. This would be dangerous without any personal history, Mercer. I need you functional."
"Understood, Captain."
As we left the operations room, Lucy touched my shoulder.
"You didn't have to volunteer, Daniel. I know how you feel about the deep."
I gave her a weak smile. "Like I said, someone has to go."
"I'm glad Aiko will be beside you. I'll be watching every pressure reading from up here."
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. On the way to my cabin, I kept thinking about the four people trapped inside the Shinkai, surrounded by darkness, waiting for someone to reach them.
I was afraid, but I knew I had made the right choice. In a few hours, I would be descending to the bottom of the Mariana Trench and whatever waited in the black water below.
I managed roughly four hours of broken sleep. Each time I drifted off, I dreamt of buckling metal and dead lights. At 03:15 I reported to the flooded dock, where the Faraday waited in its cradle, its tough titanium hull gleaming beneath the work lamps.
Aiko was already there, fastening her flight suit. "First visit to full trench depth?"
"Is it that obvious?"
She glanced at my hands. "They're shaking."
I pushed them into my pockets. "I need tea."
The preparation area was busy. Two technicians were completing the life-support checks while another loaded emergency oxygen, medical equipment and repair kits into the storage compartments. Nadia Khan, a junior engineer, crouched beside the rescue winch housing with a diagnostic lead running to her terminal.
"Winch motor is sound," Nadia said as we approached. "Field coils are isolated, manipulator hydraulics are holding pressure, and the emergency release has passed twice. Please don't make me test it a third time."
Aiko gave her a small smile, then went straight to the external hull and began inspecting the pressure seals. I followed her lead, grateful for the familiar routine.
"You've been this deep before?" I asked as I tested the primary oxygen valves.
"Twice. Once in the Tonga Trench and once here, about 15 km north of today's target. The Tonga dive was textbook. The Mariana dive was not."
She moved methodically to the rescue winch.
"What happened?"
"We lost hydraulics at roughly 10,000 m and had to begin a manual ascent. The cause was never established conclusively. Possibly pressure fluctuations."
My stomach clenched.
She noticed. "That was an older craft. The Faraday has independent backups for every critical system."
For the next seventy-five minutes, we worked through the checks and briefing. I verified life support, navigation and communications whilst Aiko concentrated on the rescue equipment, thrusters and manipulators. Nadia supervised the external mechanisms and signed off each system. Lucy coordinated from the operations room, relaying updates on the Shinkai.
"Their oxygen is falling faster than projected," she reported through the dock speaker. "Mirai Maru now estimates fourteen hours remaining."
Captain Calder arrived for the final briefing and displayed a topographical survey of the seabed.
"You will descend directly to these coordinates. Based on Mirai Maru's data, Shinkai is wedged in this crevice at 10,900 m. Attach the rescue cable, draw her clear and begin a controlled ascent."
"What about the pressure anomalies?" I asked.
Calder looked towards Lucy's image on the wall display.
"They're concentrated about 3 km from the target," Lucy said. "The pattern has shifted twice in the past hour, but none of the known anomalies has crossed your descent corridor. I'll keep tracking them."
"If we encounter one?" Aiko asked.
"Use your judgement," Calder said. "The priority is rescuing those researchers, but you are not to sacrifice the Faraday and two more lives."
At 04:30, Aiko and I climbed into the submersible and took our places at the pilot and co-pilot stations. The interior was cramped but functional, surrounded by screens, controls and the thick forward viewport.
"Last chance to withdraw," Aiko said as she began the pre-launch sequence.
I shook my head. "I'm staying."
"Descent profile loaded. Life support optimal. Rescue equipment ready."
The dock controller's voice came over the speaker. "Faraday, this is Resolution Dock Control. You are cleared for launch. Flooding dock and opening outer doors."
"Resolution, Faraday. Received. Beginning launch sequence."
Seawater flooded the dock. Sweat gathered on my forehead as the Faraday disengaged from her cradle and became buoyant within the chamber.
"Launching in three, two, one."
Aiko engaged the thrusters and guided us through the open doors. The Resolution's underwater lights illuminated our first moments in the sea, then dwindled above us as we descended. Our exterior lamps came on, casting pale blue light into the darkness.
"Passing 1,000 m," Aiko announced.
I concentrated on the displays as the depth increased and external pressure climbed. The hull creaked occasionally, the normal sound of titanium adjusting under load.
After a long period of silence, Aiko said, "What brings a man who fears the deep to the deepest place on Earth?"
I kept my eyes on the monitors. "Who says I'm afraid?"
"Your personnel file mentions anxiety during deep-water operations. Your hands are also still shaking."
I breathed out slowly. "There was an accident during my doctoral fieldwork. A survey dive off South Georgia. We lost power at 900 m."
"How long were you trapped?"
"Five hours on emergency life support."
I remembered the absolute darkness after the lamps failed, the cold creeping in as one system after another shut down, and the certainty that every breath might be my last.
"You don't have to explain," Aiko said. "I understand."
More than an hour later, as we passed through another layer of black water, she told me about an early supervised trial off Okinawa. She had grown up there, watching her father's boat leave harbour each morning.
"The test-dive limit was 500 m," she said. "I pushed the craft to 750 because I was young and stupid. The oxygen recycler began making a high-pitched noise like a kettle, only much worse. I was certain it was about to rupture."
"What happened?"
"A loose filter cap. Once I calmed down enough to think, it took ten seconds to secure."
She adjusted our descent angle.
"But I remember those ten seconds of panic perfectly."
The descent lasted for hours. Short conversations gave way to long intervals of instrument checks and depth reports. Aiko spoke about twelve years of deep-sea work: luminous animals, hydrothermal vents and the peculiar quiet that seemed to deepen as the water above us grew heavier.
"Passing 5,000 m," she said at last.
I checked the communications link. "Resolution, this is Faraday. Status report. All systems normal. Depth 5,000 m."
Captain Calder's reply carried a trace of static. "Faraday, Resolution. Received. Shinkai reports approximately eleven hours of oxygen remaining. Continue descent."
The reality of our position pressed against my mind with every passing minute. At 5,000 m, the column of water above us was greater than the height of many mountains. The external pressure was beyond any environment the human body could survive.
Some time later, Aiko announced, "7,000 m. Entering the hadal zone."
I had studied the deepest ocean for years. We knew less about parts of it than we knew about the surface of Mars, yet life persisted there: translucent fish, red amphipods and bacteria adapted to pressures that destroyed ordinary cellular machinery.
At 8,500 m, I tried the radio again.
"Resolution, Faraday reporting depth 8,500 m."
The response was broken by interference.
"Faraday... Resolution... continue descent. Shinkai oxygen... ten hours..."
Aiko adjusted the communications filters. "We're entering the interference zone. We'll lose clear voice contact soon."
"Wonderful."
"The location beacon should continue transmitting. They'll know where we are even if speech becomes impossible."
At 9,000 m, the radio dissolved into static. We continued through the darkness with only the sound of the Faraday's systems and the occasional groan of the hull.
"10,000 m," Aiko announced much later.
Our lights now revealed only a narrow cone a few metres ahead. Marine snow drifted through it like ash.
"There," Aiko said suddenly. "Sonar contact."
I checked the instruments. "Range decreasing. Depth approaching 10,900 m. We should have visual shortly."
At 10,900 m, our lamps caught a flash of reflective metal embedded in a narrow rock face. As we eased closer, the Shinkai emerged fully into view: a rounded research submersible jammed into a tight crevice, with visible damage along one side of its hull.
"Shinkai, this is Faraday. Do you receive us?"
The video display flickered to life. Four haggard faces were crowded into the frame. An older Japanese man spoke with controlled urgency.
"Faraday, this is Dr Masato Kuroda aboard Shinkai. Thank you for coming. Our situation is deteriorating."
"We're here to get you out," I said. "Report your status."
"Approximately eight hours of oxygen remain. Life support is failing. Hull integrity is compromised in section three." He hesitated. "There is also something wrong with our instruments."
Aiko was already manoeuvring the Faraday above them. "Define wrong."
"They show physically impossible readings. Pressure changes that do not correspond to any water movement. The temperature falls from 2 degrees C to minus 270.3 degrees C, then returns within seconds."
I looked at Aiko. Absolute zero was minus 273.15 degrees C. Water froze at 0 degrees C at standard pressure, although extreme pressure complicated its phase behaviour. Nothing about the conditions outside could explain a reading near absolute zero.
"When did this begin?" I asked.
"Approximately one hour ago, shortly after we detected..."
Kuroda glanced at his colleagues.
"Detected what?"
"Movement. Large-scale movement beneath us. Sonar registered a mass of extraordinary size, but its properties did not resemble any known object or organism."
My hands tightened on the controls.
"We need to work quickly. We're positioning to attach the rescue cable."
Aiko activated the external manipulators. "I need to bring us within 2 m of their upper attachment point."
She eased the Faraday over the trapped vessel. One manipulator extended, carrying the rescue cable towards the Shinkai's emergency coupling.
"Nearly there," she murmured.
Our sonar sounded a new contact.
"What is that?" I leaned forwards and changed the scale. "There's something below us."
Aiko did not look away from the manipulator controls. "Size?"
I checked the return twice. "I can't resolve its boundaries. It's massive, and it's rising."
The water around us seemed to darken, as though our lamps were losing power. Their readings remained normal.
On the video link, Kuroda's expression changed. His eyes widened as he looked beyond the Shinkai's viewport. The other researchers pointed frantically and appeared to shout, though their voices were lost beneath the static.
"What can they see?" I whispered.
"Daniel." Aiko's calm had sharpened into fear. "Look."
I followed her gaze downwards.
At first there was only darkness. Then I realised the darkness itself was moving.
Something vast rose from below, its edges bending our light away from it. Its form seemed both fluid and solid, composed of angles that folded through one another and surfaces that occupied incompatible positions. Every attempt to follow its outline ended in pain behind my eyes.
Points of blue-green light pulsed across it. Their arrangement changed whenever I tried to understand it, forming geometries that seemed almost meaningful before collapsing into something my mind could not hold. The shape moved beneath both submersibles, so large that scale became useless. Parts of it appeared to pass behind the seabed whilst remaining plainly visible in front of us.
It did not feel like an animal approaching prey. It felt like some greater structure intersecting our world without recognising that we were there.
The Faraday rolled as displaced water erupted into violent currents. Warning lights ignited across the console.
"Stabilising thrusters engaged," I said. My voice sounded unfamiliar.
The entity continued to rise with impossible smoothness. On the video feed, Kuroda pressed close to the Shinkai's viewport. His colleagues retreated, but he stared at the pulsing lights as though unable to turn away.
I could not turn away either.
The lights were not random. They followed an order that hovered just beyond comprehension. For one terrible instant I felt I was about to understand what they meant.
I blinked.
The Faraday's interior changed. The control panel rippled, its switches and displays shifting position. The metal walls expanded and contracted like breathing tissue. My navigation screen filled with symbols I had never seen.
I blinked again and most of the cabin returned to normal, but not completely. The controls were solid beneath my hands, yet their proportions seemed subtly wrong.
"Aiko, do you see-"
"Concentrate," she said, her voice taut.
Her hands continued working the manipulators with trained precision, but her lips moved continuously.
"Non-Euclidean transitional phasing requires seven-dimensional counterbalance," she whispered. "Asymptotic convergence at the boundary condition."
The phrases were not part of any operating procedure. They sounded like advanced theoretical physics, far beyond anything I had ever heard her discuss.
"Nearly there," she said more loudly.
The cable coupling hovered centimetres from the Shinkai's attachment point.
A sudden movement on the video feed drew my attention. Kuroda had placed both palms against the viewport, his face close to the glass. His colleagues tried to pull him away, but he resisted with startling strength.
The entity's light patterns accelerated. A tendril rose between the submersibles. It was neither liquid nor solid, yet seemed to possess the properties of both.
"Hurry," I said, fighting to keep the Faraday stable as the currents struck us.
"Cable locked."
The tendril touched the Shinkai's hull.
Kuroda screamed.
The sound came through the audio link, then seemed to pass beyond it. It resonated through the Faraday's hull and into my bones. It contained tones no human throat should have produced and intervals that made my teeth ache. Metal flooded my mouth.
Dark lines spread from Kuroda's fingertips where they met the viewport. They divided across his hands and arms in precise geometric branches, crossing his neck and face without following any human vein or nerve.
His features softened and shifted as though the tissues beneath his skin had become fluid. His mouth widened beyond its natural limits. His eyes bulged and, for an instant, appeared to multiply.
I was not imagining it. His body was being rewritten before us.
"Daniel." Aiko's voice cut through my horror. "Help me initiate ascent."
I forced my attention back to the controls. The cable was attached, but we still had to free the Shinkai. I engaged the winch and drew the line taut whilst Aiko angled the Faraday above the crevice.
More tendrils rose around us. Where one brushed our hull, frost spread across the outer surface of the viewport. The ice crystals grew in repeating geometric patterns, changing whenever I focused on them.
Another tendril pressed against the external camera. The Shinkai's video feed broke into recursive images, each fragment dividing into smaller copies of itself.
"What is it?" I asked, though I knew Aiko could not possibly have an answer.
"A non-locally manifesting higher-dimensional intersection," she replied without hesitation.
Her voice had become flat and exact.
"Our three-dimensional spacetime can perceive only a projection of its full structure."
I stared at her. She had not spoken like that before the lights touched us. There was no reason she should know any of it.
"Emergency ascent protocol engaged," she announced. "Maximum thrust. Hold on."
The Faraday's engines surged. The rescue cable snapped tight, and the Shinkai tore free from the crevice. Alarms sounded as the winch, thrusters and hull loads exceeded their recommended limits.
We began to rise, dragging the damaged submersible with us.
My vision fractured. Every indicator split into rainbow-like bands. The control panel separated into overlapping layers, each displaying a different set of readings. When Aiko moved, she left trails behind her, as though several versions of her occupied the cabin at once.
"Daniel."
Her voice came from every direction.
"You must remain conscious. Focus on something constant."
I tried to answer, but my mouth would not obey me.
The cabin pressure fluctuated, but the sensation went deeper than air pressure. Gravity wavered. One moment I was crushed into my seat; the next I was almost lifted from it.
Aiko seized my arm. Her nails dug into my skin and broke it. The sharp pain briefly cleared my thoughts.
"Count with me," she ordered, her voice returning to a single point in space.
The numbers would not remain numbers in my mind. Each one unfolded into branching geometries, like the entity's lights had inserted something into my thoughts that I could not dislodge.
Aiko tightened her grip. I looked down at the precise cuts made by her nails. The blood did not run. It hung above my skin in trembling beads.
Darkness closed around the edges of my vision. The last thing I saw was Aiko's unnaturally calm face. The blood vessels in her eyes had ruptured, but she continued the ascent procedure with mechanical precision whilst the cabin disintegrated into overlapping versions of itself.
Then everything broke apart, and I remembered nothing more.
Pain woke me.
It was not the sharp, localised pain of a single injury, but an ache throughout my body that made breathing difficult. I opened my eyes to a blurred ceiling and tried to understand where I was.
"He's waking again," a woman said to my left.
I turned my head and pain shot through my neck. Dr Harriet Shaw was adjusting the drip beside my bed.
The Resolution's sick bay slowly came into focus: white walls, observation monitors and the quiet circulation of filtered air.
"What happened?" My voice emerged as a dry rasp.
"Try not to move," Dr Shaw said. She inserted a syringe into the port on my cannula. "This should ease the pain."
A cool sensation spread along my arm, and the worst of the ache began to recede.
"The Shinkai? The rescue?"
"Successful, more or less." She avoided my eyes as she checked my observations. "Captain Calder will brief you when you're stable."
As the medicine took effect, I became aware of other discomforts. My muscles were stiff from prolonged immobility. Dressings on my arms and chest itched, and my mouth was painfully dry.
A shipboard date display showed that five full days had passed since our descent. The rescue had taken place on day one of the emergency; I had awakened on day six with no memory of the intervening time.
"I've been unconscious for five days?"
My memory fragmented when I tried to reach beyond the ascent: pulsing light, Aiko counting and the sensation of reality sliding loose.
Dr Shaw nodded. "You've moved in and out of consciousness, but this is the first time you've been lucid enough for a proper conversation."
She gave me water. "Small sips."
It tasted faintly metallic, but soothed my throat. As I drank, I noticed how many dressings covered me. I drew back the thin blanket and saw gauze around my torso, with smaller dressings along both arms.
"What happened to me?"
"You sustained multiple lacerations during the ascent," Dr Shaw said, taking the cup when I had finished. "None was particularly deep, and no major blood vessels were damaged."
"Lacerations from what?"
She adjusted the monitor before answering. "Trauma during the emergency ascent. The Faraday suffered extensive damage. You were thrown against broken equipment. According to Aiko-"
She stopped.
Something about the explanation felt wrong, although my thoughts were too clouded to say why. The wounds beneath the dressings felt too regular, too deliberate.
Images surfaced without sequence: the vast geometry below us, the moving lights and Kuroda screaming as dark lines spread across his skin.
"Dr Kuroda and the others?"
"They're alive," Dr Shaw said with careful neutrality.
She made a note on my chart and moved towards the watertight door.
"I need to tell the captain you're awake. Try to rest."
Left alone, I tested my limbs. Everything moved, although every motion hurt. I touched the dressing on my arm. The cut beneath it seemed shaped rather than torn, nothing like an injury caused by striking broken equipment.
Before I could examine it further, the sick-bay door opened.
Aiko Mori entered, standing unnaturally straight. Every movement was exact and economical. Something about her had changed. She seemed too still, as though all the small unconscious motions of a living person had been removed.
"It is good to see you conscious," she said from the foot of my bed.
Her voice retained its calm efficiency, but no emotional undertone.
"They tell me it's been five days."
The broken capillaries in her eyes were still visible, lending them a reddish cast.
"Five days, seven hours and approximately twenty-two minutes since we initiated emergency ascent protocols," she said.
"What happened after I lost consciousness?"
Aiko surveyed the room before looking back at me. "We completed the rescue despite complications. We freed the Shinkai and brought it upwards with the Faraday. Both vessels were recovered through Resolution's flooded dock."
"Complications? You mean the thing we saw?"
Something flickered across her expression and vanished.
"The deep ocean contains many phenomena science has not classified."
"That was not a jellyfish or an undiscovered squid. It was..."
I searched for language that could contain what we had witnessed.
"It was impossible."

"How did we reach the surface?"
"I maintained an optimal emergency-ascent trajectory despite variable pressure conditions. The Faraday's systems remained adequate until the final 1,000 m, when several failures occurred simultaneously. Resolution recovered both craft."
Her gaze shifted away.
"And Kuroda?"
"Dr Kuroda experienced an adverse physiological response to the anomaly."
She was giving me facts stripped of everything that mattered. Whenever she spoke about the ascent or Kuroda, she stared at the walls or equipment instead of meeting my eyes.
"You're not telling me everything."

You make seven, although your presentation differs from the others."
The early cases had an awful logic: Aiko and I had seen the light directly; the Shinkai's crew had suffered the strongest exposure; Lucy and Owen had handled the live sensor feeds and corrupted recordings; Dr Shaw had treated the rescued personnel.
"I'm sorry, Captain. I didn't mean-"
She dismissed the apology with a small movement of her hand.

"That would be a matter for Captain Calder."

I began with the environmental sensor logs. The temperature readings appeared first, and I leant closer to the display, certain I had misread them.
According to the surviving data, the water surrounding the submersibles had fallen from approximately 2 degrees C to minus 270.3 degrees C in less than ten seconds when the entity appeared.
That was physically impossible. Water freezes at 0 degrees C at standard pressure, although the immense pressure at that depth alters its phase behaviour. Nothing about high-pressure physics could explain liquid seawater approaching absolute zero at minus 273.15 degrees C.

Next I opened the partial external-camera archive. The surviving footage consisted of static interrupted by recursive shapes, patterns repeating at different scales. They resembled the fractal distortions that had spread across the display when the entity touched the Faraday's camera. There was no complete frame and no clear image that could prove what we had seen.
The audio was equally damaged. Most files contained only white noise, but one fragment had captured the moment Dr Kuroda began to scream.
I hesitated before playing it. Then I reduced the volume and pressed the control.
The sound began as Kuroda's voice but rapidly became something else: a layered vibration containing apparent frequencies beyond the normal range of human hearing. He rolled up his sleeves as he turned towards the display. That was when I saw the marks on his forearm: red lines scratched into his skin, forming angles and intersecting patterns.
"What happened to your arm?" I asked, forcing my voice to remain casual.
Owen looked down as though he had only just noticed them.
"I've been doing that to let the pressure out."
"What pressure?"

"You've seen it too. In your dreams, at least. The patterns in its light. They repeat and grow, each one more complex than the last."
The cuts across my body began to itch. I resisted the urge to scratch them.
"Have you found anything in the data? Any explanation for what we encountered?"
"Explanations require a shared framework of understanding," Owen said flatly. "We lack the cognitive architecture to contextualise what we experienced. It would be like asking a two-dimensional being to describe a cube."

He gave no response. He remained motionless, with not even the rise and fall of breathing visible.
"Dr Kuroda, I need to ask what happened aboard the Shinkai. What did you see before we arrived?"
Still nothing.
I was about to try again when he rose abruptly. There was no shift of weight or effort, only a smooth transition from sitting to standing.
"Dr Kuroda?"
Slowly, he turned to face me.
I recoiled until my back struck the wall.
His face was wrong. His left eye sat higher than the right, and one side of his mouth extended much too far. Worse, his features seemed to occupy several positions at once, producing a blur my vision could not resolve. The lines from his neck now covered his face, pulling and twisting the skin in opposing directions. Where they intersected, the flesh folded inward at angles that could not exist on a human head.
"Can you understand me?" I asked, scarcely able to hear my own voice.
Kuroda's head tilted beyond the natural range of his neck. His mouth opened, and I braced myself for another scream.
Instead, he spoke in a voice like several people talking at once.
"Understanding requires equivalence of perception. You remain confined to three-dimensional sensory processing."
"What happened to you?"
"Expansion. The entity remapped my neural architecture to accommodate higher-dimensional information processing."
"Are you still human?"
He produced a sound almost like laughter, but its cadence was wrong.
"Humanity is one narrow configuration of thought. I retain the memory of its constraints. I am no longer limited by them."
I pulled back my sleeve and exposed the geometric cuts.
"These patterns are appearing across the crew. What do they mean?"
Kuroda moved close to the glass. His distorted face almost touched it.
"They are pathways. Access points. The entity occupies multiple dimensions, but it requires physical anchors within yours to sustain a connection."
"A connection for what purpose?"
"Purpose implies linear causality. The entity does not operate within such constraints." His mouth widened. "If translation is necessary: to teach, to transform, to elevate."
"One of your colleagues tore bedding into a ligature and killed himself. That is not elevation."
"Transition is not universal. Some cognitive architectures collapse under dimensionally expanded awareness."
I was about to ask another question when the intercom went dead.
Jamie's voice came through the door behind me.
"Dr Mercer, your five minutes are over."
When I looked back through the glass, Kuroda was once again sitting on the edge of the bed with his back towards me, completely still, as though our conversation had never occurred.
On the way to my cabin, I tried to assemble what I had learnt. The entity was not merely an unknown deep-sea organism. It existed beyond the ordinary structure of our reality. Proximity had changed those exposed to it, restructuring their biology and thought into forms that served as physical anchors.
But anchors for what?

Her direct exposure had been through the pressure-anomaly feeds and the corrupted rescue telemetry she had monitored from Resolution. Whatever the signal was, sight of the entity itself had not been necessary.
"Lucy," I said carefully, "something happened to everyone exposed to the entity, whether at the trench or through the recordings. These aren't merely dreams. Something is changing our minds and our bodies."
"Yes." Her expression brightened in an approximation of her old enthusiasm, although nothing changed in her eyes. "Exactly. We are being reconfigured to process higher-dimensional information. Our brains are being rewired, neuron by neuron."
"Doesn't that concern you?"
"Concern requires uncertainty regarding the outcome. I have none."
She stepped towards me.
"In my dream last night, I saw what we are becoming. I saw beyond the veil of three-dimensional spacetime into a reality so vast and intricate that human language cannot contain it."
As she spoke, she continued scratching, digging deeper until fresh blood ran down her wrist. Her face showed no pain, only fierce concentration.
"The entity is not a creature as we define life. It is a nexus where several dimensional planes intersect our reality. Its appearance in the trench was not coincidence. It was mathematics: probability curves converging at exact coordinates in spacetime."
I moved towards her and reached for the bleeding arm.
"Let me treat that."
Lucy pulled away with startling speed.
"No. The patterns must be maintained. They are calibrating us, Daniel. Connecting our brains to the entity's frequencies."

Her movements became smoother as she spoke, every gesture executed with terrible precision.
"You should embrace the change," she whispered. "It hurts at first. The human mind was not designed to contain dimensional mathematics. But once you stop resisting, once you allow the pattern to complete itself..."
Her expression approached reverence.
"It is beautiful. Like seeing colours that have always existed beyond the range of your perception."
"I've seen Dr Kuroda. What is happening to him isn't beautiful. It is destroying his humanity."
Lucy's head tilted at the same unnatural angle I had seen in Kuroda.

The affected moved with the same precise economy and repeated the same phrases about higher-dimensional information and the mathematical foundations of reality. My own cuts were healing, but the itching never stopped. Sometimes I discovered myself scratching them without realising it, deepening the pattern. Each time, I had to grip my own hand until the urge passed.
The tablet blurred as my eyes lost focus. I had barely slept for two days. Whenever I closed my eyes, I saw the pattern: geometric forms expanding and contracting, folding through dimensions I could almost perceive.

Resolution felt altered. The passageways were quieter, and symptomatic crew moved with rigid precision instead of the relaxed gait they had possessed before. They acknowledged me with brief nods. The dwindling number who appeared unaffected kept close to the bulkheads and avoided everyone's gaze.
In the laboratory, I prepared the blood-analysis equipment and drew a sample through the cannula port in my arm. I had been examining my blood since discovering the marks, searching for corresponding changes at the cellular level.
At first, the sample looked normal through the microscope: red cells suspended in plasma, with occasional white cells drifting among them.
At maximum magnification, the crystalline structures appeared.
They were minute geometrical objects unlike anything in the medical literature, miniature counterparts of the patterns carved across my skin. Their behaviour was more disturbing than their shape. Whilst I watched a structure, it remained in one position and configuration. Whenever I blinked or looked away, it reappeared at a different angle or location.

What if the entity occupied more than three spatial dimensions? What if contact had turned us into anchors through which higher-dimensional forces could manifest in ordinary space?

"The geometric patterns may encode the relationships required to maintain this bridge. Behavioural changes suggest progressive restructuring of neural pathways to process information that the human brain did not evolve to contain."
That might explain the obsession with patterns, the mechanical precision and the erosion of ordinary emotion. The entity was not simply changing people. It was using them as receivers, or perhaps as apertures through which its pattern could enter our world.
If that process spread beyond the vessel, I had to warn Singapore and the shore authorities about what we might bring with us.
I ran to the upper-deck wireless room. The door stood open, and inside, every installation had been torn apart. Wall panels hung loose. Wires trailed across the deck. The main radio lay in pieces.
Aiko Mori knelt amid the wreckage. Her hands moved far too quickly as she assembled the components into something new: a branching structure growing outwards from a central knot.
"Aiko," I said, appalled. "What have you done?"
She turned sharply. The vessels in her eyes had darkened until the whites appeared almost black.
"I am constructing an appropriate transmission array. Standard radio equipment is insufficient for higher-dimensional signal propagation."
"You've destroyed our only link to Singapore and the shore authorities."
"Three-dimensional communication is obsolete."
Her fingers continued twisting wires and circuit boards into configurations that should not have remained stable.
"It needs to hear us. All of us. Across the dimensional boundary."
"What needs to hear us?"
I already knew.
"The entity. The nexus. The intersection." Her head tilted. "It reached through to us. We must now reach back."
I stepped towards the door.
"I need to tell the Captain."
Aiko's hands stopped.
"Captain Calder no longer commands this vessel. Authority requires a common framework of understanding. That framework no longer applies."
I backed out, turned and ran towards the bridge.
If Aiko had destroyed the wireless equipment, what else were the affected crew planning? The passageways seemed to lengthen as I ran, distances stretching beyond the ship's actual dimensions. I told myself it was exhaustion, or the structures in my blood interfering with my perception.
I burst onto the bridge.
"Captain, we have a situation."
The captain's chair was empty. The bridge was deserted except for Lucy Harcourt, who stood rigidly before the forward windows, staring out across the dark ocean.
"Lucy," I said, trying to steady my voice. "Where is Captain Calder?"
She did not respond at once. When she turned, the movement was both smooth and broken, different parts of her body rotating independently.
"The Captain is being prepared," she said. Harmonics layered her voice now. "As are the others."
Her face came into view, and I caught hold of the nearest console to keep myself upright.
She had changed as Kuroda had. Her left eye was higher than her right and one side of her mouth extended too far, but the worst of it was the impression that her features occupied several positions simultaneously. The geometric pattern had become a grid across her face. At every intersection, the skin folded inwards at impossible angles.
"It is beautiful once you understand," Lucy said through a mouth that opened beyond the limits of human anatomy. "I did not see it at first either, Daniel. The dimensional mathematics appeared impossible. Then I stopped forcing it into three-dimensional constraints."
I stepped back as she advanced.
"This isn't you. Whatever we encountered in the trench is changing you. It is changing all of us."
"Change implies divergence from an original state."
Her head rotated slightly without her neck moving.
"This is revelation, not alteration. The patterns were always present in the quantum substrate of reality. We simply lacked the ability to perceive them."
She raised her hands. Her fingers separated and bent through configurations no bones could support, then reassembled into new arrangements as they moved.
"You are nearly ready, Daniel. I can see the pattern aligning in your mind. Release the constraints. Allow the mathematics to pass through you."
Her fingers lengthened towards my face as the flesh divided and reformed.
"Don't resist," she whispered. "No one can resist. The entity exists across all possible dimensions. It is already within you, rewriting you at the most fundamental level."
I backed against the bridge door and groped behind me for the handle.
Lucy smiled far too widely. The pulsing, rainbow-like geometries from the trench shone in her altered eyes.
"Join us," she said, her voice a chorus of overlapping tones. "Understand the pattern below reality."
I pulled the door open, slipped through and slammed the reinforced watertight door as her impossible fingers reached for my face. Her hand was caught in the closing gap. There was no scream. Several fingers detached and fell to the deck, where they continued crawling independently across the metal.
I ran.
My boots hammered the passageway as the general alarm began to sound throughout Resolution. Its rising and falling wail tore through the unnatural quiet that had held the ship for days and matched the ragged rhythm of my breathing.
The vessel lurched. I struck the bulkhead and caught myself as the deck plates vibrated. The steady engine note had already faded into silence.
We were adrift.
As I passed the mess, I saw two crew members sitting perfectly still, their bodies bent at angles no human spine should sustain. Their eyes moved independently as they watched me, but they made no effort to follow.
Not yet.
The main research laboratory was my only option. It contained equipment that might help us understand the process, including the pulse generator, field coils and resonance apparatus from the pressure-sensitive quantum sensor trials. More immediately, it had reinforced watertight doors designed for hazardous-material containment.
I rounded the final corner and almost collided with Callum Reed. His eyes were wide with panic, and the shoulder of his communications uniform had been torn open.
"Mercer." He seized my arm. "What the hell is happening? I just saw Gregor Nowak crawling along the overhead. Gregor from the engine-room restart team. He was literally on the ceiling."
I pulled him towards the laboratory.
"There isn't time to explain. We need somewhere secure."
"The engines are down," Callum said, keeping pace. "I tried to contact Singapore, but the wireless room is wrecked. Aiko has done something to the equipment."
We reached the laboratory. I entered my access code with trembling fingers, and the reinforced doors opened.
Two people were already inside: Dr Harriet Shaw and Nadia Khan, the junior engineer who had assisted with the Faraday's final launch checks and subsequent recovery repairs.
Harriet was bent over a microscope. Nadia was hurriedly collecting tools and portable equipment from a storage locker.
"Seal the laboratory," I told Callum as we entered. "Hazardous-material containment protocol seven."
Callum went to the main terminal and initiated lockdown. I turned to Harriet. Dark red lines showed above her collar and climbed the side of her neck. They were the beginning of the same pattern, but her eyes remained clear and focused.
"I've been studying my blood," she said without preamble. "The crystalline structures are multiplying. They are altering the cellular composition at a level our equipment can barely resolve."
Nadia looked up from the locker.
"I can weld the mechanical catches once the doors are shut."
"Do it," Harriet said. "They're coming. I saw them in the passageway."
Nadia carried a portable welding set to the main entrance. The laboratory had two reinforced doors, the principal entrance and a smaller emergency exit. Both would have to be secured.
"How long have you been here?" I asked Harriet.
"About an hour. After Captain Calder began..."
She stopped. Her hand rose unconsciously to scratch the pattern on her neck, but she caught her wrist before her nails touched it.
"She is one of them now. She started ordering unaffected personnel into the cargo hold. She called it necessary preparation. Nadia and I came here instead."
A heavy blow struck the outer door.
Through the small reinforced window, I saw Owen Price staring in at us.
Or rather, I saw what had once been Owen Price.
His body stretched to an impossible length, then compressed again, as though his bones could bend and telescope at points where no joints existed. Through every deformation, his face retained the same terrible calm worn by the transformed crew.
"Callum," I called, fighting to keep my voice steady. "Where are we?"
Callum Reed looked up from the shipboard terminal. "Still in the Philippine Sea. Singapore would be about four days away with propulsion, but at present we haven't got any."
Nadia Khan finished welding a reinforcing plate across the main watertight door, then moved to the emergency exit. I remembered her from the Faraday's launch, working beneath the dock lights with a spanner in one hand and a diagnostic lead in the other. Now sweat shone on her soot-streaked face.
"This will hold for the moment, but not for ever," she said. "What are these people? What has happened to the crew?"
I took a breath and forced my thoughts into order. "I think we encountered something in the Mariana Trench that exists in more dimensions than we can perceive. Something that is altering people at the most fundamental level."
Dr Harriet Shaw nodded. "The biological changes have no precedent in medical science. They aren't merely physical. Neural pathways are being rewritten. I scanned Aiko yesterday, before she refused any further tests. Her brain activity was profoundly abnormal."
Another impact shook the main door. More faces appeared at its reinforced window: Lucy Harcourt, Aiko Mori and others I knew, their features already undergoing the same appalling changes. Six of them had shown clear symptoms early on, in addition to me, but the number had grown as medical staff handled the rescued researchers and technicians studied the corrupted sensor feeds.
They pressed themselves against the glass in perfect unison, though their bodies moved wrongly. Arms and legs flexed beyond their natural limits, joints folding at angles that should have shattered bone.
"They aren't trying to kill us," I said as I watched them. "They want to change us. They want to make us like them."
"What's the plan?" Callum asked. His voice was taut with barely controlled panic.
I turned towards the laboratory equipment. "We study this while we still can. If we understand the process, we may be able to interrupt it."
"I need more samples," Harriet said. "Blood, tissue and, if possible, further neural scans."
I rolled up my sleeve, exposing the precise geometric cuts. "Start with me. I'm affected, but I'm still myself for now."
For the next several hours we worked frantically whilst the blows against the doors continued. Harriet took samples from both of us, because the pattern had already appeared on her neck as well as my arm. Nadia barricaded the entrances with every heavy piece of equipment she could move. Callum tried to restore the laboratory radio, but every channel returned only static. Harriet and I worked at separate benches, testing the samples as quickly as the instruments allowed.
Under the microscope, the crystalline structures in my blood had multiplied since our previous examination. They were forming more intricate arrangements by the hour.
"Daniel, look at this," Harriet called, strain sharpening her voice.
She had linked the neural scanner to a terminal displaying her own brain activity. "The patterns in our neural signals match the crystalline structures in our blood. They also match the marks we cut into our skin."
I went to her station. She was right. Her neural activity traced the same geometry visible in the blood sample and along her neck.
"It's behaving like a virus," I murmured as a theory took shape. "A higher-dimensional infection that uses mathematical relationships in place of a conventional genetic code."
Harriet nodded and scratched at her neck before catching herself. "But a virus requires a vector - some means of transmission between hosts. How is this spreading?"
I thought of the trench, the immense moving darkness and the patterns of light travelling across its impossible geometry.
"The light," I said. "Those pulses weren't simply communication. They carried encoded information. Our brains received it and began reproducing the pattern. The recordings retained part of the same mathematically encoded interference, which is why playing them disrupted nearby electronics. Lucy, Owen and Harriet were exposed through those feeds even though they never saw the entity directly."
"Then why are we compelled to scratch the pattern into our skin?" Harriet asked.
The answer came with sickening clarity. "Because the entity exists in dimensions we cannot perceive. It needs anchors in ordinary space to maintain contact. The patterns are mathematical connections between its frame of reality and ours. The blood crystals, the altered neural activity and the marks on our skin are all parts of the same anchor."
Nadia looked up from the emergency exit. "So they're acting like aerials, receiving a signal from somewhere else."
"Exactly. Which means that if we can disrupt that signal..."
I crossed to the equipment cabinets and began pulling out components: the laboratory's pulse generator, field coils, signal amplifiers and resonance equipment carried for the pressure-sensitive quantum sensor trials. Nadia helped me assemble them into a narrow-band quantum-interference emitter.
"What are you building?" Callum asked, abandoning his useless attempts to reach the rest of the ship.
"A tuned interference source," I said, working rapidly. "Not an ordinary electromagnetic pulse. If the transformed crew are receiving a cross-dimensional signal through these crystalline anchors, this may interrupt the coupling for a short time."
Harriet joined us. Her movements were becoming stiff as the marks spread farther up her neck. "The resonance would have to match the interference pattern precisely."
I completed another connection. "I'm calibrating the field against the oscillation frequency we measured in the crystals. If the model is right, the opposing pattern should destabilise the anchors without harming the ship's electronics."
The pounding against the door stopped.
We froze and looked towards the reinforced window. The faces had vanished.
"Where have they gone?" Nadia whispered.
A new sound answered her: metal groaning overhead. The ventilation grille began to bow inwards as if something heavy were pressing down upon it.
"They're in the ventilation system," Callum said, backing away.
I connected the final lead to the emitter. "It's ready. I don't know what range it will have, but -"
The grille tore free and struck the deck. Lucy's face appeared in the opening, her features warped into an impossible configuration. Her body followed, flowing into the room with its joints bending backwards and its limbs stretching far beyond human proportions.
I activated the emitter.
A high-pitched whine filled the laboratory as blue-white light pulsed outwards in concentric rings. Lucy froze halfway down, her entire body convulsing. The geometric marks on her skin flared crimson and then faded to a dull brown.
Her face flickered between its distorted form and the familiar features I remembered.
"Daniel," she gasped. The layered echo had vanished from her voice, leaving her own warm tones. "What's happening to me?"
"Lucy, is that really you?"
I moved closer, keeping the emitter between us. Tears ran down her face as she held her human form for a few seconds.
"It's still inside me," she said. "I can feel it, but your field is interrupting the signal."
"Tell me what it is. What is happening to the crew?"
Her body trembled with the effort of remaining herself. "It isn't evil, Daniel. It is simply incomprehensible. We have made first contact with something that exists in dimensions we never evolved to perceive."
"But it's changing people," I said. "Destroying who they are."
Lucy shook her head and winced. "Not destroying. Translating. Our brains cannot process higher-dimensional reality in their present form. It is trying to change us so that we can perceive what is really there. It is doing it by force, without consent, because it doesn't understand consent. It doesn't understand individuality as we do."
Her voice tightened as her features began to distort again. "It exists across several dimensions at once. To it, we are only limited projections of higher-dimensional forms. It thinks it is freeing us."
The emitter grew hot in my hands. Its blue light began to flicker.
"The field is failing," Harriet warned. Her own voice had acquired a faint mechanical precision, and the pattern on her neck pulsed in time with her heartbeat.
Lucy's body jerked. Her limbs began to lengthen again.
"Listen to me, Daniel. You cannot stop this. None of us can. It is already inside all of you - the mathematics, the pattern. It will complete itself eventually."
"There has to be a way."
"The ship," Lucy gasped as harmonics began to layer themselves through her voice. "The quantum-stabilisation array in the experimental physics bay. It was brought aboard to create stable conditions for pressure-sensitive quantum sensor trials. It might temporarily..."
Her face folded back into its inhuman configuration, and the clarity vanished from her eyes. She sprang at me with sudden, fluid speed.
Nadia struck her across the head with a metal canister. Lucy scarcely reacted. She turned towards Nadia with cold, mechanical precision.
"The main door!" Callum shouted.
I turned. The welded entrance was warping, its metal glowing red as the crew outside forced it inwards with impossible strength. The barricade would not hold much longer.
"We have to reach the experimental physics bay," I shouted, clutching the overheating emitter. "Now."
Harriet pointed to a maintenance hatch in the deck leading into the service tunnels between levels. Nadia prised it open whilst Callum took emergency lamps from a cabinet. Lucy and two other transformed crew members were fully inside the laboratory now, advancing with stiff, unnatural steps.
The main door failed with a shriek of tearing metal. More transformed crew pushed through the opening.
"Go!" I yelled, activating the emitter one final time.
It discharged a last, powerful pulse and died. The transformed crew stumbled, momentarily disorientated. We dropped through the hatch one after another, and Nadia hauled it shut above us just as hands reached into the opening.
The service tunnel was narrow and dark, illuminated only by Callum's emergency lamps. We crawled quickly through the confined space, hearing movement in the ducts and passages around us.
"They're in the tunnel network as well," Nadia whispered. Her voice echoed faintly from the metal walls.
"The physics bay is two sections over," I said, leading them on. "The stabilisation array was intended to keep delicate quantum states isolated and measurable during the sensor trials. It was never designed to operate continuously or cover an entire ship."
"If the entity's influence depends upon cross-dimensional quantum coupling," Harriet said, her voice growing flatter despite her efforts, "a stabilisation field might force the anchors into a fixed local state and suppress the signal."
It was a hypothesis, not proof, but it was the only one we had.
We reached a vertical shaft and climbed down to the next level. Callum went first, followed by Nadia and Harriet. I descended last. When I looked up, faces were watching us from the tunnel intersection above - faces with too many eyes and mouths opening along impossible lines.
The experimental physics bay was empty when we reached it. I hurried to the main control station and powered up systems that had not been used since the early sensor trials. The quantum-stabilisation array had been installed as experimental equipment, but its field had never been configured to extend beyond the bay.
"Help me reroute the power," I told Nadia.
She immediately opened the distribution cabinet and began connecting the auxiliary lines. Callum secured the watertight reinforced door whilst Harriet adjusted the emitter rings. Her movements were distinctly stiff now.
"Will it work across the whole ship?" Callum asked.
"Not in its present configuration," I said, entering command sequences. "The field has a limited range, but if we couple it to the ship's power-distribution network, we may be able to extend it far enough to suppress the active transformation throughout most compartments."
The banging began at the door. Through its small window I saw Captain Ruth Calder's face, or what remained of it, pressed against the glass. Her skin was covered in the same geometric pattern as the others.
"Hurry," Callum urged, bracing himself against the door.
Nadia fastened the final power coupling. "Ready."
I entered the activation sequence.
The array started with a low hum. Rings of blue-white light spread from the emitters, like those from our makeshift device but far stronger. The effect was immediate. Captain Calder convulsed beyond the window, her face flickering between its transformed and human states.
Screams sounded throughout RRS Resolution. They were not the reality-distorting cries we had heard in the trench, but human cries of pain, terror and confusion.
Harriet collapsed to her knees beside me, her body shaking violently. The marks on her neck faded from furious red to dull brown until they were scarcely visible. When she looked up, her eyes were clear again.
"It's working," she whispered.
The field expanded to its maximum range, covering most of the vessel. Through the door window, I saw transformed crew members stumbling in the passageway as their bodies returned towards human proportions. Some collapsed unconscious. Others leant against the bulkheads, staring at their hands in bewilderment.
I helped Harriet to her feet as the array settled into a constant hum.
"How long will it last?" Nadia asked.
I checked the power and thermal readings. "At the present load, roughly three days. Perhaps a little longer if we isolate every non-essential circuit, but this system was never meant to run continuously."
Callum finally stepped away from the door. Some of the tension left his shoulders. "What happens when it fails?"
I touched the pattern on my arm. The marks remained, inert whilst the field was operating. "This is only suppression. We've interrupted the cross-dimensional signal, but the crystalline structures and the changes they produced are still inside us."
Harriet nodded. "We've bought time. Nothing more."
"Enough to reach Singapore?" Callum asked hopefully.
"If we can restore propulsion," I said. "We've already spent nearly two days adrift since the engines were shut down. Once we are moving again, Singapore should be about three days away at our best safe speed. We also need to reach the upper-deck wireless room and warn the shore authorities, British consular officials, port health authorities and the international marine incident team. They must be prepared for what we may bring with us."
Nadia was already studying the propulsion diagnostics. "The engines aren't damaged. Their controls were deliberately shut down. Gregor Nowak and the engine-room team should be able to restart them if the field has restored them."
I looked at the three people around me. Callum and Nadia had shown no obvious marks, though neither of us could assume they were untouched. Harriet and I appeared normal under the field, but the pattern remained in our blood, our brains and our skin. The emitter had not cured anyone.
"We should find the Captain," I said. "We need to know whether the stabilisation field has returned her to herself."
We opened the door cautiously. Crew members lay throughout the passageway in varying states of consciousness. Some sat against the bulkheads, staring at their hands. Others were unconscious on the deck, their bodies restored to recognisably human proportions.
Captain Calder sat amongst them with her back against the wall opposite the physics bay. Her face was her own again. The geometric marks had faded to pale, almost invisible lines across her skin. When she looked up, recognition entered her eyes.
"Mercer," she said, her voice rough but human. "What did you do?"
"We activated the quantum-stabilisation array," I replied, kneeling beside her. "It has interrupted the signal and reversed the active deformation, but only temporarily."
"I remember everything." Horror crept into Calder's voice. "I was conscious the entire time. I watched my body move and heard my voice speak, but I couldn't stop any of it. I was a prisoner inside my own skin."
Harriet came over, her clinical training reasserting itself despite everything she had endured. "The field appears to have restored everyone to approximately the state they were in before the most severe changes. But the cellular alterations remain, as do the blood crystals and the abnormal neural patterns. This is not a cure."
I helped Calder rise slowly.
"How long?" she asked.
"About three days at the current power level," I said. "Possibly a little more if we divert every non-essential load, though I wouldn't rely on it."
Calder looked along the passageway at her recovering crew. "Then we have approximately three days to restore propulsion, reach Singapore and work out what happens next."
None of us answered. We all understood that the field had only paused the process. The entity had altered us at a fundamental level, making anchors of our blood, our brains and our bodies. When the array failed, the pattern would resume.
I helped Captain Calder towards the bridge as crew members stirred around us and the engine-room team began the work of bringing RRS Resolution back under way. Soon the vibration of restored propulsion travelled through the deck beneath my feet. We were moving towards Singapore again, with only three days of stable field operation remaining.
Three days of something resembling ordinary life.
Three days to prepare for the moment when our brains might begin perceiving realities no human mind had evolved to endure, whether we consented or not.
