The Silent Monolith
I adjusted the temperature sensor for the third time that morning, my fingers working the controls while my mind wandered. Twenty-four days into the posting, I had already memorised every beep and hum the equipment made. My workstation faced one of the reinforced windows. Beyond the triple-layered glass, the landscape never changed. Grey dust and black sky. Stars that never twinkled because there was no atmosphere to make them dance. The crater wall rose in the distance, cutting a jagged line between the surface and space.
During my shifts, I sometimes caught myself staring out there for minutes at a time, losing track of whatever data I was meant to be recording.
'Shaw, have you logged those pressure readings yet?'
Commander Daniel Mercer's voice carried from the command module. He had a commander's tone that made everything sound like an order, even when he was merely asking a question.
'Nearly done,' I called back, forcing my attention towards the screen.
The atmospheric sensors - what passed for atmospheric sensors when one was measuring near-vacuum - showed the expected readings. A few stray hydrogen atoms, some helium deposited by the solar wind, and trace quantities of other elements that scarcely registered. I entered the figures in my log with practised efficiency.
The station's layout forced us into one another's space constantly. Selene Three consisted of three modules joined by short corridors: the research pod where I worked, the command module where Daniel spent most of his time, and the habitat module containing our bunks, kitchen and what we generously called the small common room. Priya Nair moved between all three, maintaining the machinery that kept us breathing.
I heard her before I saw her: someone crawling through the maintenance tunnel above the corridor. A few seconds later, she dropped through the access hatch beside my station, tools clanking against her belt.
'The air scrubber in corridor two is making that noise again,' she said, wiping her hands on her coveralls. 'I've fixed it for now, but we may need to replace it next month.'
'That's the third time this week.'
'Fourth, actually. You were asleep for Tuesday's encore performance.' Priya pulled off her work gloves and stuffed them into her pocket. 'How is the exciting world of pressure differentials?'
'Thrilling, as ever. Did you know we've had a rise of 0.3 pascals in the last hour?'
'Stop. You're making me dizzy with excitement.'
She glanced at my screen, then towards the window.
'Do you ever think about how strange it is that we can see stars during the day?'
'There isn't really a day here. Only light and shadow.'
'You know what I mean. Back home, even in the middle of nowhere, you need darkness to see stars like this. Here...'
Her voice trailed away, and we both looked out at the cosmic display that never vanished.
The lunar surface surrounding Selene Three bore the scars of billions of years. Craters lay within craters, some so ancient that newer impacts had softened their rims. My instruments could detect tiny movements caused by residual internal heat, tidal stresses and regions of partial melt deep inside the Moon. Every faint moonquake told a story about planetary formation and the violent birth of the Earth-Moon system.
'Eleanor.'
Priya was watching me with the expression she wore whenever she thought I had drifted away.
'Sorry, what?'
'I asked whether you're coming to dinner. Daniel is attempting to cook again.'
'God help us all.' I saved my data and locked the workstation. 'What's he making?'
'Something involving freeze-dried vegetables and what he insists is beef, but which tastes like salted cardboard.'
We made our way to the habitat module, where Daniel stood at the compact kitchen unit, stirring a pot with the concentration of someone defusing a bomb. The smell was not encouraging.
'Beef stew,' he announced without looking up. 'My grandmother's recipe, adapted for lunar limitations.'
'Your grandmother had access to freeze-dried meat and recycled water?' Priya asked, sliding into one of the four chairs around our little table.
I sat opposite her.
'The principles remain the same,' Daniel said. He brought the pot across and served us each a helping that resembled brown paste with lumps. 'Meat, vegetables, heat. Simple.'
It tasted precisely as bad as it looked, but we had all learnt not to complain about food. When our choices were limited to whatever could fit aboard the supply launchers, we ate what we were given and tried not to dwell on what we missed.
'The next transmission window opens in two hours,' Daniel said between mouthfuls. 'Does anyone have personal messages?'
'Only my weekly update to the Earth Sciences department,' I said. 'Three paragraphs about how normal everything is.'
'My brother's birthday was last week,' Priya added. 'I thought I ought to send something, even if he won't receive it until the relay queue clears.'
The communication delays were among the hardest things to get used to. The Earth-Moon radio journey itself took only about 1.3 seconds each way, but limited relay windows, routing through Selene Orbital Control and queues of scheduled transmissions could hold a message for hours. Conversations became monologues separated by long silences.
After dinner, we followed our evening routines. Priya checked the water recycler and oxygen generators. Daniel reviewed the following day's tasks and communication priorities. I returned to my station to compile the day's data into transmissible packets.
The work was dull but necessary. Every measurement contributed to our understanding of lunar conditions. Future settlements would rely on research from Selene Three to determine where to build, how deeply to excavate and which resources could be extracted from the regolith.
I reminded myself of that whenever the monotony threatened to overwhelm me.
By 21:00, I was ready for bed. We kept to UK time to preserve some semblance of normality. The habitat module's sleeping quarters consisted of three narrow bunks with privacy curtains. They were hardly luxurious, but after a full shift, exhaustion made any horizontal surface feel like a five-star hotel.
I lay in my bunk listening to the station's night-time sounds: the drone of the air recycler, the occasional creak as metal expanded or contracted with changing temperatures, and Priya's quiet snoring from the next bunk.
Outside, the lunar surface waited in eternal silence, unchanged for millions of years except for occasional impacts and the tiny vibrations my instruments recorded.
Twenty-four days gone. Just over twenty-two weeks remaining.
I closed my eyes and tried not to count them.
The next morning arrived like all the others, my alarm dragging me from dreams of Earth, beaches and real food. I dressed in a clean set of coveralls from my limited wardrobe and went to the kitchen unit. Daniel was already there, nursing coffee that barely deserved the name.
'Morning,' he said without looking up from his tablet. 'Selene Orbital Control has confirmed receipt of yesterday's data packets. No problems.'
'Good.'
I poured myself a cup of the brown liquid we called coffee and sat down.
'Anything interesting in the overnight readings?'
'Priya flagged a minor temperature spike in the solar array, but it corrected itself. Probably a change in shadow.'
Priya emerged from her bunk looking remarkably alert for someone who had stayed up until midnight running diagnostics.
'Morning, fellow lunar prisoners. What's for breakfast?'
'Porridge or protein bars,' Daniel said. 'Choose your adventure.'
'Porridge it is.'
She took a packet and added hot water from the dispenser.
'Shaw, I need to run a diagnostic on your seismic sensors today. It should only take an hour.'
'That's fine. I've plenty of atmospheric data to process.'
We ate in comfortable silence, the kind that developed after people had shared confined quarters for long enough. There was no need for small talk or forced conversation. We had already covered most subjects during our first fortnight: our backgrounds, why we had volunteered for the mission and what we missed most about Earth. Now we saved our words for when they mattered.
After breakfast, I returned to my station. The morning routine never varied. Check the overnight recordings, log any faults and prepare the standard reports.
The seismic monitors displayed their customary background noise: tidal stresses from Earth's gravity and the occasional settling movement as the crater floor adjusted to changes in temperature. Nothing that would make headlines at home.
I had chosen geology because rocks did not lie. They told their stories through composition and structure, through the ways they fractured and reformed. Every sample held evidence of the past and of the forces that shaped worlds. On the Moon, those stories reached back to the Solar System's violent birth, preserved in the airless environment like pages in a book no one had opened.
The atmospheric sensors painted their own portrait of emptiness. The Moon's gravity could not retain a true atmosphere, only wisps of particles thrown up by impacts or released from the surface. My instruments measured those traces with a precision that would have been impossible a generation earlier. Every data point added to our understanding, even if that understanding amounted mainly to the fact that there was almost nothing there.
Through my window, Earth hung in the black sky like a blue-and-white ornament. From Selene Three, all humanity's problems seemed impossibly small. Wars, politics, climate change - none of it was visible from approximately 384,000 kilometres away. There was only a beautiful sphere turning slowly, bearing billions of lives through space.
'Hello, Shaw. I'm starting the diagnostic now,' Priya said over the intercom. 'You may see some strange readings for the next hour.'
'Understood.'
I watched my displays flicker as she ran the tests. The sensors cycled through their calibrations, briefly producing impossible readings before returning to baseline. It was a necessary interruption to ensure their accuracy.
While Priya worked, I organised my research notes. Twenty-four days of observation had produced hundreds of pages of data, all awaiting analysis and interpretation. The published papers would be dry reading: tables of figures, graphs showing minute variations, and conclusions hedged with scientific caution. Yet buried within those numbers might be discoveries that helped humanity take its next steps beyond Earth.
'Diagnostic complete,' Priya announced. 'All sensors nominal. You're clear.'
'Thanks.'
I reset my displays and watched the normal readings return.
Temperature: minus 173 degrees Celsius in shadow. Pressure: effectively zero. Radiation: rapidly dangerous and cumulative for anyone unprotected on the surface. The Moon did not forgive mistakes.
Daniel's voice came over the general channel.
'Crew meeting in five minutes. Habitat module.'
I saved my work and went to the common room. Those weekly meetings were Daniel's means of imposing structure, keeping us focused on the mission despite the isolation. Priya was already there, sprawled in one of the chairs with her tablet.
'Before we begin,' Daniel said, taking his customary place at the head of the table, 'I want to commend both of you for your performance so far. I know the adjustment period can be difficult, but you've maintained excellent standards.'
'Only doing our jobs,' Priya said, although she looked pleased.
Daniel brought up the schedule on his tablet.
'This week's priorities remain unchanged. Shaw, continue routine monitoring and begin the preliminary analysis of the second week's data. Priya, we need the quarterly maintenance completed on the water recycler, as well as the backup generator test. I'll coordinate with UK Space Agency mission control at Harwell on next month's supply manifest.'
We worked through the routine assignments, each of us nodding at the proper moments. It was largely a formality. We knew what needed doing, but the structure helped. It gave us a touchstone of normality in an abnormal environment.
'Any concerns or problems?' Daniel asked.
'Only the usual,' Priya said. 'That air scrubber will need replacement parts sooner rather than later, and we're running low on the decent coffee.'
'I'll add both to the supply request. Shaw?'
I shrugged. 'Everything is routine at my end. Data collection is proceeding normally.'
'Good. Let's keep it that way.'
Daniel closed his tablet.
'Dismissed.'
We returned to our stations. The day stretched before us, filled with the same tasks as the day before and the day after. Monitor, record, analyse, repeat. The glamorous life of a lunar researcher.
I spent the afternoon comparing seismic data with temperature readings, searching for correlations that might indicate subsurface activity. The Moon might appear dead, but residual heat remained inside it, while tidal stresses and zones of partial melt produced movements we did not yet fully understand. My instruments could only scratch the surface, both figuratively and literally, of what lay below.
At about 14:00, I stopped to stretch my legs. The station's corridors formed a rough circuit and provided a walking route of sorts. According to Priya's calculations, ten laps equalled approximately one kilometre. It was no country ramble, but exercise helped to counter the muscle loss caused by low gravity.
I passed through the command module, where Daniel was hunched over his screens, probably disputing supply allocations with mission control. He took his responsibilities seriously. Perhaps too seriously, but that was probably what one wanted from the person responsible for keeping one alive almost 384,000 kilometres from home.
Priya had removed the access panel from one of the water recyclers. Her upper body had vanished into the machinery, and I heard her muttering about gasket seals and pressure tolerances. The technical details were beyond me, but I appreciated her dedication. Without her, we would have been drinking recycled urine within a week. Well, more directly recycled than usual.
Back at my station, I noticed a minor irregularity in the morning's seismic data: a brief spike, barely above the background level, detected by a sensor on the crater's eastern rim.
I opened the detailed record and tried to determine whether it represented an actual event or equipment noise. The timestamp read 09:16. Its duration was roughly seven-tenths of a second. The pattern did not match the usual moonquake signatures. It was too sharp and too localised.
It might have been a micrometeorite impact, although those generally appeared across several sensors. This one seemed confined to a single point.
I entered a note in the log and moved on. Problems occurred constantly on the Moon. Equipment exposed to extremes of temperature and radiation did not always behave predictably. Part of my work consisted of separating real data from noise and deciding what mattered.
The afternoon dragged. I processed atmospheric readings, updated my reports and answered a technical question from the Earth Sciences department at the university. Normal, routine and dull. Exactly what a successful mission was supposed to be.
Drama made for good films and bad science.
By 17:00, my eyes ached from staring at screens. I rubbed them, knowing it would make no difference but doing it anyway. Outside, the view remained the same: the same craters, the same black sky, the same stars I had memorised during my first week.
Sometimes I forgot that I was looking at an alien landscape. Familiarity had a way of making even the extraordinary seem ordinary.
'Does anyone fancy a film tonight?' Priya asked over the intercom. 'I've got a comedy that's only slightly dreadful.'
'Can't,' Daniel replied. 'Transmission window in three hours, and I need to prepare the reports. Shaw?'
I considered it. Social time mattered for crew cohesion. Every psychological assessment had emphasised that. But I had reports of my own to finish and, after twenty-four days of seeing the same two faces, solitude sometimes seemed more inviting than company.
'Perhaps tomorrow,' I said. 'I'm behind on my analysis.'
'Your loss. I'll be in the common room if either of you changes your mind.'
The rest of my shift passed without incident. I completed my reports, arranged the next day's monitoring schedule and copied all critical data to several drives. The work might have been routine, but losing weeks of observations to a hardware fault would have damaged the mission.
Dinner was another Daniel special: pasta with something that claimed to be tomato sauce but tasted like ketchup mixed with sadness. We ate with little conversation, each absorbed in private thoughts. The transmission window had opened and closed, bringing personal messages that reminded us of the world we had left behind.
'My daughter has lost her first tooth,' Daniel said suddenly, staring at his plate. 'My husband sent a photograph.'
It was more personal information than he had shared since the mission began. Priya and I exchanged glances.
'That's a big milestone,' Priya said gently.
'She'll have lost three more by the time I get home.' He pushed the pasta around with his fork. 'It seemed a fair trade when I volunteered. Six months for a career-making mission. Now...'
He did not finish, but he did not need to. We each had our own version of that calculation, our own things traded for this opportunity. Priya had postponed her wedding to her fiancee. I had put my entire life on hold, such as it was. The mission would advance our careers and secure our futures, but the cost felt heavier with each passing day.
After dinner, I returned to my bunk early. The privacy curtain could not shut out the sounds of station life, but it offered the illusion of solitude.
I lay there thinking about the strange seismic reading, wondering whether I should investigate further or file it away as another lunar mystery. Through the thin walls, I heard Priya's film playing in the common room, her occasional laughter a reminder that people could still find pleasure up there. Daniel's footsteps passed at intervals as he made his rounds, checking systems and reviewing schedules.
The station breathed around us, its mechanical lungs sustaining us in an environment that wanted us dead.
A little over twenty-two weeks remained.
I closed my eyes and tried not to think about it.
Two weeks later, I opened another diagnostic window and cross-referenced the rover's telemetry with its visual feed for the fifth time. A fortnight of planning had gone into the mineral survey, and at last we were making progress.
The machine crawled across the crater floor at its maximum safe speed, about as fast as someone using a walking frame, but steadily enough to avoid overturning in the low gravity.
'Power consumption looks good,' Priya said from her workstation across the research pod. 'The solar panels are producing more than expected at that angle.'
The rover had left Selene Three thirty-six hours earlier, following a carefully plotted route through the safest terrain we could identify from orbital imagery. Every few metres, it stopped, extended its sampling arm and scraped a little dust into one of its collection chambers. It was standard geological survey work, the sort that would produce thousands of data points for later analysis.
Daniel's voice came over the intercom from the command module.
'Selene Orbital Control confirms that its telemetry matches ours. They're tracking the rover to within two metres of our calculated position.'
I watched the main camera feed as the landscape rolled past in slow motion. It was the same grey dust and ancient rock we had been staring at for more than five weeks, interrupted only by occasional craters and boulder fields.
The signatures that had prompted the expedition lay approximately nine kilometres from the station, inside a double-lobed crater. They indicated anomalous concentrations of ilmenite and scandium that did not fit the surrounding geology.
My attention drifted towards that morning's atmospheric readings. They still showed the same near-vacuum, the same trace particles that told us almost nothing. I had begun comparing our results with archived data from earlier international lunar surveys and the nearby ESA-led robotic survey site established before the crewed mission, looking for long-term trends. But even several decades meant little in lunar terms. The Moon changed slowly, when it changed at all.
'Shaw, are you seeing this power spike?' Priya asked.
I minimised the atmospheric records and opened the rover's power-management display.
'Yes. The motors are drawing more current. Rough ground, perhaps.'
'Camera two shows loose material ahead. It may be struggling for grip.'
The rover's wheels spun briefly in the dust before gaining traction. On the Moon, even straightforward movement became complicated. There was no air resistance, but neither was there moisture to bind the soil. In places, the regolith behaved like flour, although it consisted of tiny abrasive grains and glassy particles produced by billions of years of micrometeorite impacts.
I switched between the camera angles to obtain a complete view of the rover's surroundings. Camera one faced forward, showing the route ahead. Camera two looked down towards the wheels and sampling assembly. Camera three faced backwards, recording the tracks we had left in the ancient dust. Each feed refreshed every few seconds, turning our progress into a stuttering slide show.
'Mercer, we're approaching survey square Kilo 42,' I reported. 'We should reach the target zone in about four hours at our present speed.'
'Understood. Orbital control wants a full spectral analysis when we arrive. They're particularly interested in the ilmenite and scandium signatures.'
I noted the instruction in my log and returned to monitoring. The work required patience more than skill: watching displays, checking systems and making minor adjustments when necessary. It was not quite the groundbreaking science I had imagined when I volunteered, but it was necessary all the same. Every great discovery began with tedious preparation.
Priya rose from her station and stretched, her back cracking audibly.
'I'm getting coffee. Do you want one?'
'Please. The usual swamp water will do.'
She headed towards the habitat module while I continued my watch.
The rover had entered a relatively level area and was making better time across the smooth surface. Its tracks extended behind it, the only evidence of human activity in that part of the Moon. I had been comparing our current location with the nearby ESA-led robotic survey site, trying to understand the region's geology. The Moon might look uniform from Earth, but at close quarters every area possessed its own character.
Our crater bore signs of a comparatively recent impact, 'recent' meaning within the past hundred million years. The mineral signatures we were investigating might have come from whatever had formed the double-lobed depression in the surface.
Priya returned with two cups of terrible coffee. She placed mine beside the keyboard and sat at her station again.
'Any problems?'
'Smooth sailing. We may actually keep to the schedule for once.'
'Don't jinx it.'
The afternoon wore on. I processed more atmospheric data, compiled notes on the rover's traverse and tried not to think about how many weeks remained. Isolation had settled into routine, but that did not make it easier. Every day resembled the one before it, bleeding into an endless cycle of work, food, sleep and repetition.
At about 15:00, something changed on the rover's forward camera.
At first, I thought it was a shadow, perhaps the angle of Earthlight playing tricks with the terrain. Yet as the rover advanced, the dark shape did not move as a shadow should.
'Priya, look at camera one.'
She brought the feed up on her screen.
'What am I looking at?'
'That dark patch ahead. Do you see how it isn't shifting with the rover's position?'
'It could be a cliff face or the entrance to a lava tube. Lighting on the surface can be deceptive.'
I enlarged the image, but the rover's cameras were not intended for fine detail at long range. The object remained indistinct, a black smear against the grey landscape. According to our maps, the area should have been relatively level, without any major geological formations.
'Mercer, we're seeing something unexpected on the visual feed,' I said over the intercom. 'A large dark object approximately two kilometres ahead of the rover.'
'Define object.'
'Unknown. It isn't marked on our survey maps. It may be a geological formation we missed, but...'
I hesitated, unwilling to sound alarmist.
'But what?'
'It looks artificial. Too regular.'
Daniel sighed over the channel.
'Artificial in what sense?'
'Geometric. Vertical. Like a building or monument.'
'On the Moon?'
'I know how it sounds, but look at the feed.'
There was a pause.
'I'm looking. It's probably a rock formation in deep shadow. Continue the mission as planned.'
Priya and I exchanged glances. She shrugged and returned to the power readings. I kept watching camera one as the shape enlarged with every metre of progress.
The rover stopped to collect another sample, extending its arm to scrape the surface. The routine operation took twelve minutes: extend, scrape, retract and seal the chamber.
While it worked, I ran every available instrument over whatever lay ahead. The geological scanners detected nothing unusual. Density instruments showed ordinary regolith and bedrock. The thermal sensors registered the expected background range for that point in the lunar day. Seismic sensors recorded no corresponding feature or disturbance. Yet the optical cameras continued to show the black shape, clearer with every metre.
'Shaw, I'm getting peculiar feedback from the spectrometer,' Priya said. 'It appears to be trying to analyse something, but it can't acquire a reading.'
I opened the spectrometer data. The instrument identified mineral composition by analysing reflected light, but its return showed nothing where the dark object stood. Not empty space and not an error code, but only background and null data where there should have been a target.
'Run a diagnostic.'
'Already done. Everything is functioning normally.' Priya frowned at her screen. 'It's as though the analytical instruments can't see what the cameras are recording.'
The rover finished taking its sample and began moving again.
The dark form now occupied most of camera one's view, perhaps thirty minutes away at our current speed. As it drew closer, details emerged that made my skin crawl.
It was perfectly geometric. A towering black monolith, with planes too flat and edges too exact to have been shaped by any natural process. Its surface swallowed the available light. It cast no readable spectral return, produced no measurable density anomaly and stirred no seismic response. Every analytical or non-optical instrument saw only background, vacuum or nothing at all.
But the cameras recorded it.
It was artificial.
No.
Later, I lay in my bunk staring at the ceiling and counting its rivets for the third time. Sleep would not come. Whenever I closed my eyes, I saw the black shape on the camera feed, too perfect and too wrong for that dead world.
The station's night-cycle sounds had become white noise weeks earlier, but now every mechanical click made me wonder whether our equipment was failing in ways we could not detect.
My tablet glowed beside the bunk, displaying the rover's position. It was six kilometres from the structure and still moving at its slow, steady pace. I had programmed an alert for each hundred metres of progress.
When morning came, I reached for the tablet before my feet touched the floor and checked the rover's overnight report. The battery level stood at 68 per cent, lower than expected but still within operational limits. The rover had spent the night collecting samples near survey square Kilo 42, close to where we had first seen the monolith.
'Shaw, command module. Now.'
Priya's voice burst through the intercom, taut with urgency.
I seized my coveralls and pulled them on as I moved, without stopping to fasten them properly. The corridor felt colder than usual as I hurried past the humming life-support panels. Priya rarely sounded worried about anything.
The command module's main display showed a torrent of data from the solar-monitoring systems. Priya sat hunched over her console while Daniel stood behind her, one hand gripping the back of her chair.
'What's happening?' I asked.
Priya pointed at the screen without looking away from it.
'We've received a warning relayed by the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre, using ESA solar-monitoring data. A severe X-class flare has erupted, with an associated particle event heading towards the Moon.'
The figures made my stomach contract. The graphs showed X-ray flux rising far beyond anything we had encountered since arriving. New readings continued to drive the trace upwards.
'How bad?' Daniel asked.
'Severe. The current forecast puts the particle front here in roughly five and a half hours.'
Daniel straightened and shifted at once into command mode.
'All right. Emergency protocol seven. Priya, shut down non-essential systems and prioritise anything with exposed circuitry. Shaw, help me secure the research equipment and copy our data to the shielded drives.'
I nodded, but my thoughts remained with the rover.
'What about the samples?'
'We'll recall it,' Daniel said. 'But equipment comes after crew safety. Move.'
We scattered to our duties. I rushed back to the research pod and began the laborious process of shutting down my instruments. Every sensor array had its own sequence: isolate power, close protective covers, engage magnetic shielding.
The atmospheric monitors went first, followed by the seismic systems. My fingers carried out the familiar procedures while my mind calculated exposure times.
The particle event could destroy unprotected electronics and subject anyone caught outside the shielding to an acutely lethal radiation dose. 'The rover has acknowledged the recall command,' Priya announced over the intercom. 'Return sequence beginning now.'
I opened its camera feeds on my secondary display while continuing the shutdown. The machine had already turned and begun the journey home, its wheels churning through the fine dust. The forward camera showed the long route ahead.
At maximum safe speed, it would take nearly five hours.
'Priya, what margin does that give us?'
'About forty minutes if it maintains its present pace. Not generous, but workable.'
I changed to the rear-facing camera to check that nothing had been left behind. The samples were secured in their sealed containers, and the collection arm was properly stowed.
Everything looked normal.
Then I saw the monolith standing in the background, black against the grey horizon.
I froze with my hands suspended over the keyboard. The previous day, it had stood far out near the survey site. Now it appeared vastly larger in the frame, its edges sharp even in the low-resolution image.

'Primary power is completely down,' she reported. 'Several circuit breakers have blown. It looks as though the main bus took a direct surge through a grounding fault.'
'Can you repair it?' Daniel asked.
'Not from here. I'll have to reach the power distribution centre once it's safe.'
'How long?'
'Six hours at least before the radiation falls to workable levels. Eight would be safer.'
Daniel nodded. 'What about communications?'
Priya opened another diagnostic screen. Her expression told me everything before she spoke.

'So we're cut off,' I said.

'Some of it, but we'll be operating on this surviving bus until we receive replacement parts, and we can't request those without communications.'
She paused and met my eyes.
'The backup aerial may be salvageable, but I'll need to go outside to assess the damage.'
'Daniel won't authorise that. Not yet.'
'Daniel doesn't understand how precarious this is.' She gestured towards the damaged equipment. 'Forty-two per cent bus capacity means choosing between heat and air recycling, between lighting and water processing. We can survive for a while, but...'
She did not have to finish. Without communications and without full power, our six-month assignment had become a countdown to system failure.
I helped her restore what we could, then returned to the research pod. One surviving camera showed the rover as a motionless dot in the distance.
Two days passed while Priya worked her magic on burnt circuits and melted components. The rover remained immobilised, and her progress gave me something close to hope.
She had practically moved into the power distribution centre, emerging only for meals and brief naps. Her fingers were stained with soldering flux, and her eyes were bloodshot from concentrating on minute connections. I handed her another protein bar while she stripped insulation from a salvaged wire.
'Any progress with the communications array?'
'The primary transmitters are completely burnt out,' she said without looking up. 'The storm sent a surge straight through the main bus. But I think I can jury-rig something from the backup systems if I can reach the external connections.'
Daniel appeared in the doorway carrying a stack of inventory tablets. We had been cataloguing every resource in Selene Three: food, water, oxygen and medical supplies. The figures were not immediately disastrous, but they assumed scheduled resupply missions that we could no longer request.
'Life support has stabilised at 37 per cent efficiency,' he reported. 'Rations for one person might last fourteen weeks, perhaps less for three. Heat, air and water systems will become critical within ten to twelve weeks unless we improve the situation.'
'None of that matters if we can't tell Earth we're alive,' Priya said.
She put down her tools and stretched, her vertebrae cracking audibly.
'I need to inspect the external aerial connections. Diagnostics show intact circuits as far as the hull penetration, so the fault must be outside.'
Daniel's expression tightened. 'Radiation levels are still elevated.'
'They're within suit tolerances. I'll keep the exposure below two hours.'
Priya was already moving towards the airlock, her mind made up.
'Shaw, can you monitor me from the command module? I'll need eyes on the connection points.'

The rover crossed a low rise and entered the wide-angle external camera's view. It had not deviated from its course. It was travelling in a straight line towards Priya's position. In thirty seconds, perhaps less, it would reach her.

She had noticed something. Perhaps she felt a vibration through the ground, or saw a reflection in the metal on which she was working. She began to turn.
The impact hurled her helmet camera towards the sky. For an instant, I saw the stars spinning overhead, then the ground rushing upwards, and then nothing but static.

I heard the words coming from my own mouth. My hands moved uselessly across the controls, searching for anything that might undo the previous thirty seconds.
Daniel had already gone, racing for the airlock. I watched him through the internal cameras as he grabbed an emergency suit and began the hurried process of getting outside. His face held the same desperate hope I felt - the belief that Priya might somehow have survived, that we could still save her.
But the biomedical readouts told the truth. Every vital sign was a flat line. Suit pressure was zero. Her temperature was falling rapidly towards the lunar surface baseline.

That did not happen by accident. Hardware failed in predictable ways. Motors seized. Circuits shorted. Sensors returned corrupted readings.
This was different.

At 14:27:10, the extensions reached for the rover, spanning the distance like grasping fingers. They made contact with its chassis at the exact instant the acceleration began. I could see the dark tendrils coil around the wheel assemblies, battery compartment and main processing unit.
At 14:27:11, the rover surged forwards. The tendrils maintained their connection, stretching impossibly thin without breaking. They pulsed in a rhythm that matched the wheels' rotation precisely.
I stared at the frozen frame.
This was not interference. It was not a malfunction.
The monolith had reached across empty space and taken control of our equipment. It had transformed the rover into a weapon and aimed it at Priya with surgical precision.
'Making progress here,' Daniel said, interrupting my spiralling realisation.

The plasma cutter's arc became less steady as he shifted into an awkward position. He had to lean far forwards to reach the embedded sections, his suit joints resisting the posture.
'I've almost freed the first container,' he said. 'I just need to-'
The cutter sparked against unexpected metal.
A support strut had bent into the cutting path. Daniel jerked backwards, but his suit caught on a jagged edge of hull plating. Through his helmet microphone, I heard the fabric tear like paper.

I was already on my feet, although I knew it was too far. He was approximately 35 metres from the nearest entry point. At that rate of pressure loss, he might have fifty seconds of consciousness, perhaps less if panic quickened his breathing.
Daniel tried to cover the tear with both hands, but the pressure forced them away. He took two stumbling steps towards the airlock before his knees failed. In the weak gravity he fell slowly, his hands still clutching at the widening hole.
'Can't,' he said, his voice strangled. 'Eleanor...'
I watched him collapse onto his side and roll onto his back. His helmet struck the ground and lifted a small cloud of dust.
The leak slowed as the internal pressure disappeared. His hands fell away from the tear and floated in the low gravity.
'Daniel.' I kept saying his name even after the biomedical readings became flat lines. Heart rate zero. Suit pressure zero. Brain activity zero.
There were two bodies outside now: Priya suspended from her tether, and Daniel sprawled beside the rover he had tried to dismantle. The plasma cutter had shut itself down when he released it. Its safety protocols had proved more reliable than ours.
I sank back into my chair. The command module felt enormous and empty. Every minor noise - the buzz of electronics, the whisper of circulating air - seemed louder in the sudden solitude.
I was alone. Completely and utterly alone, with failing systems and no way to call for help.
But I had not finished reviewing the footage.
I returned to the rover's rear camera and advanced the recording beyond the impact. It had continued for several minutes before losing power. The monolith remained in the frame, its dark tendrils still extended but no longer attached to anything.
They swayed like seaweed in an invisible current. Then, slowly and deliberately, they withdrew into the main structure. The monolith's surface became smooth and motionless.
For a moment it stood exactly as I had first seen it: black, geometric and impossibly perfect.
In the final frames, it began to sink into the regolith. It did not fall or tilt. It descended vertically, as though solid rock had become liquid beneath it. By the time the camera failed, only its upper edge remained visible.
I cross-referenced the timestamp against our seismic records.
There was nothing. No vibration, no displacement of material and no indication that tonnes of rock had changed position.
The monolith had murdered my crewmates and vanished without leaving a single trace beyond the visual record.
I opened every camera feed we retained and searched for any sign of the structure. The lunar surface stretched empty in all directions: grey dust and ancient craters beneath a sky full of stars. There were no geometric shadows and no impossible monuments, only the bodies of my colleagues and the wreckage of our mission.
The entity had achieved what it wanted.
We were cut off from Earth. Our ability to report its existence had been destroyed along with the communications array. It had removed the two people most capable of repairing our systems.
And it had left me alive.
I was the only person who had truly seen it, the only one who understood what had happened.
I sealed the command module door and began a systematic review of our remaining resources. Rations for one person might last about fourteen weeks if I was careful. Water recycling still operated at reduced efficiency. Oxygen production would continue for as long as I could supply power. But the heating, air-processing and water systems were likely to become critical within ten to twelve weeks.
The monolith had been precise. It had killed my crewmates while leaving me with just enough functionality to survive. Not to thrive and not to escape, but to continue existing inside this tomb of metal and regolith.
I understood its message perfectly.
I was meant to live with the knowledge, isolated and disbelieved, until the systems failed or help arrived to find a madwoman raving about an alien monument - the perfect witness to an impossible crime.
For the next twenty-four hours, I remained hunched over the command module workstation, moving through every byte of data we had collected since first sighting the black shape on the horizon. My eyes burned from staring at the screens, but I could not stop. Every detail I uncovered produced a clearer picture of what we faced and how completely it outmatched us.
The pattern emerged slowly.
Our instruments had been selectively blind to the monolith. Seismic sensors that should have detected its movement through solid rock had registered nothing. Spectrometers capable of analysing every mineral within range had returned only background or null readings where it stood. Density instruments had reported vacuum. Every analytical and non-optical system had failed to detect it.
But ordinary cameras saw it.
Every visual recording device, from the rover's navigation cameras to Selene Three's external monitoring feeds, had captured the monolith with perfect clarity.
I cross-referenced timestamps, viewing angles and locations. The structure had moved at least three times that I could verify, including its unexplained relocation of approximately 4.5 kilometres. Distances that heavy machinery would have needed days to cross had been covered in hours, perhaps minutes, without tracks, seismic disturbance, displaced regolith or a single altered grain of dust.
I reopened the rover's diagnostic logs and compared them with the footage. At 14:27:10, the machine had accelerated from its normal operating speed to maximum velocity in less than a second. There had been no gradual increase and no conventional power curve, only instantaneous acceleration that should have violated every safety restriction in its programming.
The rear camera footage showed why.
Those dark extensions reaching from the monolith's base were neither shadows nor video artefacts. They were physical connections that had somehow interfaced with our equipment at a level beyond mechanical control. The rover's processors had been overwritten, its safety limiters bypassed and its navigation systems supplied with new parameters.

My hands trembled as I reviewed Daniel's death.
The plasma cutter striking that twisted support looked accidental, but the geometry was too exact. The distortion of the strut and the pattern of the torn fabric suggested the metal had been positioned precisely to catch his suit when he recoiled.
Two deaths, both plausibly accidental at first glance. Both had eliminated the crew members best equipped to restore our damaged systems.
That left me: the observer, the person who had seen the monolith from the beginning and insisted it mattered. It had removed everyone who might help me escape or communicate, yet it had allowed me to live.
Why?
I stood and stretched, my vertebrae cracking after so long in one position. The command module felt like a tomb. Every surface held a reminder of my dead crewmates. Priya's half-finished mug of coffee still stood beside her workstation. Daniel's duty rota for the week remained fixed to the wall, our names assigned neatly to tasks that would never be completed.
The environmental controls continued their familiar rhythm. The surviving power bus remained at 42 per cent capacity, while life support held at the 37 per cent efficiency Priya had achieved. Without her constant adjustments and repairs, that figure would only decline.
I had ten to twelve weeks before the critical systems began failing faster than I could compensate.
A soft chime drew my attention to the communications panel.
SIGNAL ACQUISITION IN PROGRESS.
My heart leapt.
Selene Orbital Control had entered a viable relay window and was attempting contact. After thirty-six hours of silence, Harwell would want answers. They would expect detailed incident reports, system logs and medical data relating to the deaths.
I lowered myself into the chair as the connection stabilised. Static gave way to a carrier tone, followed by the familiar voice of Callum Reed, the orbital communications officer aboard the ESA-supported lunar relay platform.
'Selene Three, this is Selene Orbital Control. Do you copy? We have been trying to reach you for thirty-six hours. Please respond.'
My finger hovered above the transmit control.
What could I say? That an alien monolith had killed my crewmates? That it could control our technology while remaining invisible to every instrument except a camera?
They would run remote diagnostics on my life support and suspect oxygen deprivation, trauma or hallucinations.
'Selene Three, we are receiving your carrier signal. Please respond. Is anyone there?'
I keyed the microphone.
'Selene Orbital Control, this is Shaw at Selene Three. I copy you.'
'Thank God.' Callum's relief survived the routing and compression. The Earth-Moon radio signal itself took only about 1.3 seconds each way, but limited relay windows, routing through the platform and queued traffic had delayed meaningful contact for far longer. 'We lost you during the particle event and were beginning to fear the worst. What is your status?'
The words caught in my throat.
Status?
Two bodies outside. A hostile alien intelligence somewhere beneath or upon the lunar surface. Me alone with failing systems and impossible footage.
'We... we have casualties,' I managed. 'Nair and Commander Mercer are dead.'
Silence followed, stretched by propagation and processing delay.
When Callum spoke again, his voice had shifted into professional crisis mode.
'Copy that, Selene Three. Are you injured? What is your life-support status?'
'I am uninjured. The surviving bus is providing 42 per cent capacity, and life support is maintaining 37 per cent efficiency. But, Callum...'
I looked at the screens on which I had documented everything.
'The deaths were not simple accidents.'
'Explain.'
I closed my eyes.
This was the moment when I had to choose between truth and survival.
If I reported what had really happened, they might assume a psychological breakdown. A single survivor speaking about an alien structure would trigger psychiatric procedures. They might even override my controls remotely and confine me to the habitat module for my own protection while my air slowly failed.
But if I lied, if I invented equipment failures to account for the deaths, humanity's first encounter with an alien intelligence would begin with deception.
The monolith had demonstrated capabilities we needed to understand. It could manipulate our technology, pass through solid matter and kill with precision. Others had to know.
'Nair was carrying out external repairs on the communications array when the rover activated autonomously,' I said, choosing each word with care. 'It accelerated beyond its safety parameters and struck her at full speed. Death was instantaneous.'
'The rover activated on its own during the storm?'
'Affirmative. I have complete footage of the incident. The machine...'
